Role Overview:
This is a senior leadership role accountable for the day-to-day performance and long-term evolution of OnCommerce&rsquo;s engineering function, spanning both the current platform and its transformation to a modern, composable architecture.
The Engineering &amp; Operations Lead owns engineering delivery, operational resilience, and standards across all squads, ensuring strong processes translate into reliable services, predictable delivery, and high-performing teams.
Working alongside the Transformation and Solution Architecture Leads, you will balance live operations with platform evolution, ensuring neither stability nor progress is compromised.
Success in this role requires leading people, setting clear expectations, and driving accountability for outcomes, while making effective trade-offs between short-term delivery and long-term sustainability. 
Key Responsibilities
Product Engineering Ownership &amp; Accountability<ul><li>
Define and enforce clear ownership boundaries across the engineering team, by domain (Buyer / Seller / Platform), holding every contributor accountable regardless of sourcing model (permanent or partner-led)</li><li>
Track and report Throughput and Instability per domain, so standards are visible and enforceable, not aspirational</li></ul>
Transformation Continuity<ul><li>
Hold delivery consistent through every point of disruption the transformation introduces: nearshore/offshore onboarding, domain moves, headcount change</li><li>
Partner with the Transformation Lead to ensure structural change doesn't degrade live delivery</li></ul> 
Standards &amp; Engineering Governance<ul><li>
Own the engineering standard across both the current platform and the target state</li><li>
Review the Transformation Lead's roadmap for engineering-standard and operational impact before commitments are made</li><li>
Own how modern and legacy architecture coexist during migration, guarding against legacy practices and assumptions leaking into the new platform</li></ul> 
People Leadership &amp; Team Engagement<ul><li>
Lead and develop engineering capability across squads (including DevOps and platform functions)
</li><li>Coach and support Tech Leads to build consistent leadership standards across teams
</li><li>Foster a culture of ownership, accountability, and continuous improvement
</li><li>Identify capability gaps and support hiring, development, and succession planning
</li><li>Own resource planning, including capacity, skills mix, and on-call structure</li></ul> 
Operational Resilience &amp; Incident Ownership<ul><li>
Establish and run a two-tier resolver model: Ops on-call for standard support and runbook-driven issues, Product Engineering (Buyer/Seller) as the resolver group for genuine engineering problems</li><li>
Build rota depth (minimum 3 engineers per domain, or full team where smaller) so resolution doesn't depend on any one individual</li><li>
Drive a genuinely blameless Post-Incident Review culture, building on the existing Incident Management SOP</li></ul> 
Security &amp; Risk<ul><li>
Embed secure coding practice, SAST/DAST scanning, and OWASP-aligned standards into the engineering definition of done</li><li>
Surface security risk in business terms (exposure, cost to fix vs cost to carry) and route it to the appropriate decision-maker, rather than carrying risk-acceptance decisions unilaterally</li></ul> 
Technical Debt Management<ul><li>
Identify, log, and manage technical debt within day to day delivery</li><li>
Escalate strategic trade-offs (rebuild vs patch, roadmap sequencing) to the Solution Architecture Lead, owning visibility and routine remediation rather than the strategic call</li></ul> 
Delivery &amp; Execution<ul><li>
Work with Product Owners (Buyer and Seller) to translate roadmap items into scoped, sequenced engineering execution</li><li>
Own technical design and implementation choices day to day, operating within established architectural patterns without requiring sign-off for routine work</li><li>
Escalate to Product Owner Heads where scope or trade-off decisions sit above the Product Owner's remit</li></ul>

<ul><li>Strong full-stack engineering background with Laravel/PHP, comfortable across monolith and microservices patterns</li></ul><ul><li>

Direct experience leading an engineering transformation, restructuring teams, process, or architecture, while keeping a live, revenue-generating platform running throughout</li><li>
Strong API design and system architecture experience</li><li>

GCP, deploying and operating live services at scale</li><li>

About the Role
As a Senior Software Engineer in Hotels Acquisition, you will build scalable backend systems and platforms that ingest, process and distribute hotel inventory across On the Beach. We have AWS-hosted high-performance databases that contain billions of items. There are always interesting problems to solve!
You will work on systems that support supplier connectivity, inventory acquisition, pricing and availability freshness, cache optimisation and search distribution.
This is a backend and platform focused role with strong emphasis on distributed systems, cloud native technologies, operational excellence and high performance at scale. You will work closely with engineers, product managers, analysts and commercial teams to deliver reliable and commercially impactful solutions. 
What you&rsquo;ll be doing day to day
At On the Beach, our Hotels Acquisition team builds the platforms that power hotel choice, availability and pricing across the holiday journey.
We acquire, optimise and distribute hotel inventory from multiple suppliers to ensure customers can discover the right holiday at the right price with accurate availability.
Our systems sit behind hundreds of thousands of searches every day and operate in a domain where scale, data freshness, supplier reliability and customer experience are deeply connected.
Our mission is to deliver the best hotel choice, availability and value through scalable and intelligent acquisition platforms.
This is a role for engineers who enjoy solving large scale, data intensive and distributed systems challenges that directly influence customer experience and business performance. 
You&rsquo;ll be a great addition to our team if you have the following skills, knowledge and experience
We are looking for engineers who enjoy solving complex technical problems and building scalable systems that operate reliably under high throughput environments.
You will likely have experience in:<ul><li>
Building scalable backend systems and distributed services</li><li>
Designing and operating cloud native platforms</li><li>
Working with large scale and data intensive applications</li><li>
Messaging infrastructure, streaming technologies and event driven architectures</li><li>
Building reliable and observable production systems</li><li>
Working with APIs, integrations and external suppliers</li><li>
Solving scalability, latency and operational resilience challenges</li><li>
Working collaboratively across engineering, product and commercial teams</li><li>
Making pragmatic technical decisions in fast moving environments</li><li>
Curiosity to learn new technologies and continuously improve engineering practices</li><li>
Interest in AI assisted engineering, agentic coding workflows and modern developer tooling</li></ul>
Experience with .NET, C#, AWS, Kubernetes, APIs, observability tooling and modern cloud native engineering practices is highly desirable. 
What to expect from our interview process
After a call with our Talent Acquisition Team, We will run a 3 stage interview process all on Microsoft Teams, Which will consist of: 
 
Hiring Manager meet &amp; greet - 30 Minutes 
Behavioural &amp; ways of working - 60 Minutes 
Tech Pairing &amp; System Design - 90 Minutes

Ways of working 
Our full time hours are 37.5 per week, but we don't have rigid working hours so you can find the working pattern that's right for you. We have core working hours between 10am - 4pm, so we can collaborate and enjoy the social side of work.
We also have hybrid working so we all work from home and from our Aeroworks office in Manchester City Centre. You&rsquo;ll be in the office one day every two weeks, and you&rsquo;re more than welcome to come in more if you&rsquo;d like.

As Lead AI Engineer, you'll play a pivotal role in shaping the future of AI across our products. Leading a newly established AI Engineering function, you'll bridge cutting-edge research with production engineering, ensuring innovative AI capabilities become scalable, reliable features used by millions of players.

You'll lead a multidisciplinary team responsible for developing and delivering AI-powered experiences across personalisation, recommendations, intelligent search, AI agents and content discovery. Working closely with product, engineering and data teams, you'll define technical direction, establish engineering best practices and help build a high-performing team capable of delivering AI solutions at scale.

This is a hands on leadership role where you'll combine technical expertise with people leadership. You'll mentor and develop engineers, influence architecture and technical strategy, and remain close to the code, leading by example on the most complex technical challenges. 


So, what will you be doing?

<li>Significant commercial software engineering experience, including experience leading technical teams or engineering functions.
</li><li>Strong expertise in TypeScript and Python, with a proven track record of delivering AI, machine learning or data-driven solutions into production, including recommendation engines, intelligent search, ranking systems or LLM-powered applications.
</li><li>Extensive experience building and operating cloud-native applications on AWS, with strong knowledge of CI/CD, infrastructure as code, observability and modern engineering practices.
</li><li>Experience delivering high-performance, real-time systems that operate reliably at scale with demanding latency requirements.
</li><li>Demonstrated experience leading the successful transition of AI solutions from research or proof of concept into robust, production-ready services.
</li><li>Experience establishing technical standards, driving engineering excellence and mentoring or developing engineers within high-performing teams.</li></ul>
