Lead complex climate and energy cases before state public utility commissions, state and federal agencies, and state and federal courts.</li><li>
Lead litigation and advocacy efforts, and perform the full range of litigation tasks, including conducting factual investigations, developing legal theories, securing expert testimony, submitting comments, petitions, briefs, and oral arguments.</li><li>
Collaborate in team problem solving, litigation strategy, and project management.</li><li>
Prepare discovery, pleadings, testimony, cross-examination, briefs, and oral arguments in state and federal regulatory proceedings and court proceedings.</li><li>
Collaborate with and oversee the work of technical experts.</li><li>
Work with our media and policy and legislation teams, as well as clients and partners, to leverage legal advocacy to obtain positive change and results.</li><li>
Supervise and mentor Associate Attorneys, interns, and litigation assistants.</li><li>
Collaborate and manage relationships with co-counsel, clients, and coalition partners to investigate, develop, and litigate cases.</li><li>
Join other staff in long-term planning, strategy development, goal setting, and work plan management that advances Earthjustice&rsquo;s work.</li><li>

Qualifications</b></p><ul><li>
Law school graduate admitted, or eligible for admission to the applicable bar within 14 months of employment.</li><li>
6+ years of litigation and legal advocacy experience, working both independently and in a coalition setting, and a background in energy law is strongly preferred.</li><li>
Licensed to practice law in the US jurisdiction in which the attorney will be located, or a willingness and qualifications to apply for membership within fourteen months of employment.</li><li>

NRDC and Yale Law School are seeking a NRDC-Yale Environmental Justice Law Fellow.</p><h2 class="jobSectionHeader"><b>
Position Summary</b></h2><div>
NRDC and Yale Law School are hiring a Legal Fellow for a two-year fellowship starting in August 2026. For the first year, through August 2027, the Fellow will work at NRDC. During that time, the Fellow will work within NRDC&rsquo;s Environment, Equity &amp; Justice Center (EEJC) to provide legal support with and for environmental justice communities across the United States, including but not limited to scoping, shaping, and advancing litigation, as well as legal, policy, and coalition-building strategies to redress environmental harms and secure environmental benefits in environmental justice communities. The Fellow will work closely with, and be supervised by, experienced NRDC attorneys. The Fellow will also collaborate with community-based partners and environmental justice groups externally and with the Litigation Team and other NRDC Departments internally. The Fellow will be affiliated with one of NRDC&rsquo;s major domestic offices (New York, San Francisco, Washington, D.C., Chicago, or Santa Monica), depending on the Fellow&rsquo;s preference and NRDC&rsquo;s needs. During this year, the fellow may be expected to occasionally travel to other NRDC U.S.-based offices.</div><div></div><p><br>
For the second year (August 2027 through August 2028), the Fellow will work at Yale Law School based in New Haven, Connecticut, as a clinical legal fellow with the Environmental Justice Law and Advocacy Clinic (EJLA), part of the law school&rsquo;s Jerome N. Frank Legal Services Organization. Working with EJLA&rsquo;s director, Professor Stephanie Safdi, the Fellow will supervise student attorneys in representing community-based organizations, Tribal Nations, residents groups, and non-profit coalitions to advance environmental justice and intersectional concerns such as Tribal sovereignty, environmental protection, public health, civil rights, and participatory environmental governance. Clinic cases may include matters undertaken in partnership with NRDC that the Fellow has worked on during the first year of the Fellowship. In addition to student supervision, the Fellow will participate in clinical teaching, case intake and docket development, and development of environmental law and justice programming within Yale Law School and interdisciplinary offerings with other university programs. The fellowship will include engagement in scholarly activities at the law school and trainings in clinical pedagogy and practice through Yale&rsquo;s clinical program.</p><p></p><p><br>

<div><div><p>The NYC Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) enriches the environment and protects public health for all New Yorkers by providing 1.1 billion gallons of high-quality drinking water, managing wastewater and stormwater, and reducing air, noise, and hazardous materials pollution. DEP is the largest combined municipal water and wastewater utility in the country, with nearly 6,000 employees. DEP's water supply system is comprised of 19 reservoirs and 3 controlled lakes throughout the system&rsquo;s 2,000 square mile watershed that extends 125 miles north and west of the City.<br>

DEP&rsquo;s Bureau of Legal Affairs, headed by General Counsel Elissa Stein Cushman, serves as in-house counsel to DEP. The work of the Bureau is managed by four units, representing the large array of matters that come before it, divided as follows: Environmental Affairs Unit, Water Supply &amp; Environmental Litigation Unit, Contracts &amp; Employment Unit, and Infrastructure &amp; Operations Unit. The members of the Bureau are responsible for ensuring that all the agency&rsquo;s legal needs are addressed, working in conjunction with the New York City Law Department, which represents the agency in litigation.<br>

DEP is seeking an attorney who will work in the Bureau of Legal Affairs on the review and resolution of disputes regarding the array of contracts that support DEP&rsquo;s vast capital program. The attorney will be responsible for working directly with the Agency&rsquo;s contracting, business, and technical staff to ensure that the Agency&rsquo;s interests are adequately protected, and for interfacing with outside parties, including contractors, consultants and other government agencies, as well as liaising with the City&rsquo;s Law Department in connection with related procurement and claims matters and other legal issues.

Under supervision, the selected candidate will review and analyze contract documents, assist in the review and interpretation of existing case law, draft memoranda, prepare Agency responses, and handle and provide legal advice on a variety of capital construction contract and procurement matters. Such candidate will be required to undertake diverse complicated projects requiring strong analytical, writing and client relations skills, and experience in conducting legal research.<br>

Minimum Qualifications</b></p><p><br>
Graduation from an accredited United States law school as defined in the Rules of the New York Court of Appeals (Sections 520.3 or 520.5) or admission to the New York State Bar.</p><p><b><br>
Preferred Skills</b></p><br>
Excellent writing, research, analytical and oral communication skills. Ability to multitask without sacrificing quality and to function well in fast-paced environment.<br>
