Firefighter-Apparatus Operator
<br><br>
Under general supervision, this position drives the fire engine to the scene, controls and extinguishes fires, and protects life and property. Maintains all fire equipment. Completes records and reports as required. Assists in educating the public regarding fire prevention and safety. Performs facilities and grounds maintenance duties. Reports to the Lieutenant.

<b>Education and Experience:</b><br>
Requires a high school diploma or equivalent, completion of SC Fire Academy training, and at least 1 (one) year as a Firefighter with a satisfactory performance evaluation. Employees must possess and maintain a valid South Carolina Class E Driver’s License or South Carolina Class A CDL (Commercial Driver’s License). Candidates must also pass the department’s Firefighter - Apparatus Operator written and skills exams, along with required SC Fire Academy courses:

Firefighter-Apparatus Operator

<p>The position of Firefighter/Operator comprises entrance level position in the fire suppression division of our department operations. Employees of this class receive training in and perform firefighting and fire suppression tasks such as controlling and extinguishing fires, performing rescue work, and driving, operating, and maintaining fire department vehicles.</p><p><b>EXAMPLES OF WORK:</b></p><p>Trains for, performs, and maintains proficiency in firefighting and rescue tasks such as connecting, carrying, and operating hose lines; directing fire streams; forcible entry; ventilation; and using ladders, lines, and other equipment to aid in fighting fires or removing fire and accident victims to safety. Administers first aid and emergency care to victims of fires, accidents, drowning, poisoning, and drug overdose.</p><p>Drives fire apparatus to and from fire. Communicates with dispatcher and fire vehicles using two-way radio. Positions apparatus and connects to supply source. Operates pumper to supply adequate pressure to the nozzle. Calculates required water flow, friction loss, and discharge pressures necessary for fire suppression.</p><p>Performs tasks necessary for the proper maintenance of the station and grounds such as cleaning floors and windows, emptying trash cans, changing bed linens, and mowing grass. Assist in preparing meals for firefighters at the station and cleans kitchen area. Provides for the security of the station by locking station doors and securing valuable items. <div><p><b>BRIEF DESCRIPTION:</b><br>
The Uncertified Firefighter/EMT shall be a sworn firefighting position. Upon acceptance of this position the selected applicant shall pass an NFPA 1583 physical and will be required to pass this physical annually along with passing the required annual physical assessments. The uncertified firefighter will have to complete a rigorous fire academy within the permitted time given by the Fire Chief or designee. Once he/she has completed the fire academy and obtained their Hazardous Materials Operations, Firefighter 1 and 2, NWCG S-130/190/L-180 certifications, all required NIMS certifications, driver operator, basic EMS for firefighters and an approved CPR course they will be assigned to a shift. While on shift they will be expected to continue training, respond to emergencies, complete apparatus and facility checks, keep equipment stocked and maintained, and all other duties assigned by the Fire Chief or designee. They will then begin their Emergency Medical Technician Basic training and upon course completion he/she will be given a maximum of 3 opportunities to pass the National Registry test. Once they complete all above items they will be recognized as a certified firefighter. This position is 48 hours on duty/96 hours on duty scheduled position, however during training this position may work 40-hours a week until completion of the fire academy. This position may be subject to the 7K Fire Exemption under the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA). Employee may be required to work irregular hours, attend job related meetings both in and out of town, and perform all other duties as assigned.</p>
