 The New Mexico Forestry Division retains lead responsibility for wildland fire management on all non-federal, non-tribal, and non-municipal lands, maintaining fire suppression capacities and emphasizing public and firefighters' safety. The Forestry Division promotes healthy, sustainable forests and watersheds in New Mexico for the benefit of current and future generations.

This position functions as the district fire management officer. This position requires protection of life, property, and that state natural resources through the planning, coordination, and implementations of wildlife prevention and mitigation programs, wildfire suppression response activities, and prescribed burn programs.
 How does it get done?
 
Supervise and coordinate the training and orientation of new and current firefighters. Plan and implement an annual training program to introduce staff to new techniques and concepts while continuing education of current firefighters. Supervise the maintenance of equipment and vehicles to ensure safety and effectiveness. Participate in the budgeting process for annual expenses and revenue. Participate and provide input to the fire chief for the expenditure of funds and coordinate the procurement of wildland equipment and apparatus. Participate in the policy, procedure and guideline development for fire and medical response to ensure crew safety during response. Provide guidance to other senior leadership related to wildland response and hazard pre-planning. Provide leadership and supervision to field staff to ensure safety and effective response. Prepare pre-incident plans and prepare emergency response procedures for high risk and high hazard risks within the community. Complete hazard mitigation prior to catastrophic events to reduce risk for the community.

 Minimum Qualification
 
Associate's degree in wildland fire science or related natural resource degree and one (1) year supervisory experience and four (4) years of experience in wildland fire or prescribed fire. Any combination of education from an accredited college or university in a related field and/or direct experience in this occupation totaling seven (7) years may substitute for the required education and experience. Must have NWCG qualifications for Crew Boss (CRWB) or other Single Resource and Incident Command Type 4 (ICT4) as specified in PMS 310-1 Incident Commander Type 4 | NWCG and be working toward either Strike Team Leader Crew (STCR) or Task Force Leader (TFLD).

Must maintain and possess a current New Mexico Driver's License, Defensive Driving,
 must pass a yearly arduous pack test and maintain wildland fire certification.
 Working Conditions
 
Will work in extreme temperatures and hazardous terrain during fire assignments and project work. Will work extended hours to include nights, weekends and holidays. Use of hand tools, chain saws and torches. Work is also performed in an office setting with exposure to visual/video displays, terminals and extensive computer and phone use. Operation of vehicles during emergency response and coordination of resources for emergency response. Must pass a yearly arduous pack test.

<div>This position, under the supervision of the Fire Management Officer acts as a supervisor of a wildland fire engine, module/ handcrew with multiple firefighters that participate in all functional areas of wildland fire and resource management. This includes wildfire prevention, suppression and rehabilitation, fuels reduction treatments, natural resource restoration, and public education. Incumbents function as first-line supervisors who train, supervise and evaluate performance of assigned staff; assign and review work; and initiate disciplinary action. Incumbent will participate in WFPP meetings, training and collaborate with federal, state and local cooperators. Incumbent will assist with management of all assigned equipment, tools and safety equipment at the facility. Incumbent will be responsible for ensuring adequate training for subordinates is completed as defined in their individual training plans.Assist with managining the tracking of budget expendatures and encumbrances. Participate in other duties as assigned providing data and information for future budgetary needs. 
 
Positions in this series manage, supervise, and participate in wildland fire suppression; fire prevention and education; presuppression; equipment and facility maintenance; and forestry and fire law enforcement. Enforce forestry and fire laws and prosecute offenders; investigate complaints of illegal burning, camp fires and plant materials harvesting; interview witnesses and suspects; collect evidence, preserve the crime scene, and determine the point of origin and cause of fire; advise the public of applicable laws, write citations and testify in court. 
 
Supervise or maintain fire apparatus and equipment to maintain constant readiness; make daily inspections and follow preventive maintenance schedules; check, clean, sharpen, adjust and make minor repairs to equipment; report mechanical problems and arrange for repairs; and replace used equipment and supplies.

Under general direction of a Fire Management Officer, incumbents manage the day-to-day fire protection operations of an assigned geographic area including fire readiness, staffing, fire prevention, training, and incident command.
