<b>The Responsibilities of the Fire Management Officer:</b></div><div><b><br>
Under general supervision, exercise responsibilities for the enforcement of state and federal laws primarily forestry, agriculture, wildlife, outdoor burning, litter and DHEC smoke regulations; conducts criminal or administrative investigations. Performs wildland fire protection duties and supervises wildland fire suppression team.</b></div><ul><li>
Responds to calls to prevent crime and enforce laws. Protects states' natural resources. Performs and conducts forestry law enforcement. Investigates wildland fires to determine cause and damages.</li><li>
Performs wildland fire prevention work. Performs wildland fire control planning and directs fire suppression activities. Ensures that preventive maintenance goals are met.</li><li>
Recruits, trains and supervises a fire suppression team. Ensures the Employee Performance Management System (EPMS) planning stages and evaluations are completed within the agency's policy/procedures.</li><li><div>
Performs administrative duties to include review of monthly forest fire activity reports. Assists agency foresters in the preparation and implementation of forest management plans, reforestation, or other landowner services. Coordinates the provision of services for fee to landowners within the sector. Provides technical assistance to local governments on forestry issues. Stays current of state and local affairs affecting forestry. Works cooperatively with local governments to promote forestry and sound forestry practices. Participates in allied forestry organizations' activities.</div></li><li>
Participates in activities in support of agency's mission and goals, and performs other related duties as required.</li></ul></div><p></p>
<div><h2 class="jobSectionHeader"><b>Minimum and Additional Requirements</b></h2></div>
<p></p><div><ul><li>A High School diploma and two years' experience in forest fire control, forestry management, or law enforcement.</li><li>
Must pass the initial physical fitness test of walking two (2) miles in 30 minutes carrying a 25 lb. pack or meet the agency's physical fitness program requirements.</li><li>
Must obtain firefighter registration with the Office of State Fire Marshal.</li><li>
Criminal background check required. Drug and alcohol test required.</li><li>
Position requires a Class A Commercial Driver&rsquo;s License (CDL). Must have Commercial Learners Permit (CLP) prior to employment. Must complete CDL Entry Level Driver Training (ELDT) Theory training within 15 working days of hire then obtain a Commercial Driver's License within 90 working days. To obtain your Commercial Learner&rsquo;s Permit, you must take the official written test at any SCDMV branch. Ability to obtain a Class I law enforcement certification within one year of employment.</li><li>

<p></p><div><ul><li>This position works primarily in Berkeley and Charleston Counties but will be required to work outside of these counties as needed. Must be a resident of South Carolina and must live in their area of responsibility or within a radius of 30 miles of their assigned work center.</li><li>
Must be able to lift, walk, squat, climb and carry objects up to 50 lbs.</li><li>
Ability to work both indoors and outdoors in changing environmental conditions.</li><li>
Works a Monday-Friday, 8:00 a.m.-5 p.m. schedule. Job requires on-call duty and weekend work. Overnight travel required to include extensive periods of time (up to 18 days) on large fire or all-hazard incidents in/out of the state.</li><li>
Must have knowledge of the assigned area and operation of fire control equipment. Knowledge of SC Forest Fire Laws and law enforcement practices and procedures. Knowledge of SCFC forest management programs, policies, and procedures.</li><li>
Ability to act effectively in emergency or stressful situations. Ability to plan, direct and evaluate the work of subordinates. Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.</li><li>
This position requires the employee to be subject to random, post incident/accident, reasonable suspicion and rehabilitation monitoring and drug and alcohol testing consistent with SCFC Drug-Free Workplace-CDL Drug and Alcohol Testing policy. </div><ul><li>This position is responsible for the strategic oversight and safety management of all aviation operations on a National Forest.</li>
<li>Maintains close liaison with other aviation managers, Forest Fire Management Officer, Deputy Forest FMO, Interagency Dispatch Center Manager, and Dispatch Coordinator to exchange information on current aviation operations.</li>
<li>Advises project planners on utilization and suitability of aircraft needed for fire suppression and aviation projects.</li>
<li>Represents Forest Aviation at Forest, Regional, National training, workshops, task groups, and meetings.</li>
<li>Coordinates with Regional aviation management on Forest aviation operations, technical guidance, special projects for aviation support personnel, and other aviation related aspects.</li>
<li>Serves as the primary aviation operations advisor to the Forest Supervisor or Incident Commander during project fires, or other projects that may involve aircraft.</li>
<li>May be the designated Contracting Officer's Representative (COR) for the Forest's aviation contracts.</li></ul></div>

<b>Examples of Specialized Experience are: </b>Assisting with providing oversight and management of aviation activities including fire detection, suppression, use of fire retardant, aerial non-fire projects. Conducting contract management, safety training and risk assessment for aviation programs. Assisting with providing technical and administrative supervision for aviation programs.<br>

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. <b>FIREFIGHTER RETIREMENT COVERAGE:</b> This is a secondary firefighter position under 5 USC 8336 (CSRS) and 8412(d) (FERS). Prior wildland firefighting experience is required. There is no age limit for entry into secondary positions. Firefighter retirement coverage of the incumbent depends upon his or her individual work history.<br>
