 Forsyth County Department of Emergency Services is seeking hard working and dedicated Fire Engineers. Fire Engineers receive and respond to fire alarms, technical rescues, medical calls and emergency/accidents. The employee may drive firefighting and rescue equipment and operates such equipment at the scene of a fire or emergency call with technician level proficiency depending on the assignment within the Fire Division. This employee must execute orders of their supervisor and on scene incident command staff promptly and efficiently and may be required to assume those roles in absence of higher levels of supervision or command. This employee is also responsible for the day-to-day operations and personnel assigned to their station or unit. Independent judgment and initiative are required in fighting fires and emergency rescues. Fire Engineers will also perform yearly fire prevention inspections, as well as conduct fire origin and cause investigations. Assumes command of day to day and incident operations of a company or shift in the absence of the Fire Captain.The employee is expected to work a rotating shift that includes nights, weekends, and holidays. The employee may be called back for duty as deemed necessary by department administration. Work is performed under general supervision and by standard operating procedures and is evaluated through reports and by overall effectiveness of operations.SPECIAL REQUIREMENTSThis position has been identified to interact with children and must comply with NC G.S. 153A-94.2(b) “requires an applicant for employment to work with children in any capacity,must require the applicant, if offered the position, to be subject to a criminal history record check conducted by the SBI.” These checks must be conducted in accordance with G.S. 143B-1209.26, the statute which authorizes the SBI to provide a fingerprint-based state and national criminal record check to cities and counties.

Purpose of Classification:
The purpose of this classification is to prevent, suppress and extinguish fires and to perform other related firefighting activities. Incumbents in this classification have successfully completed training at the fire academy.
This classification is safety sensitive, subject to random drug testing in accordance with the County&rsquo;s Drug &amp; Alcohol Policy.
Essential Functions:

Responds to emergency calls for fire suppression, medical assistance, hazardous materials incidents, motor vehicle accidents, natural disasters, explosions, bomb threats, downed power lines, and other emergency situations; responds to instructions from dispatcher; and contacts appropriate related agencies as needed.
Provides protection of life and property; suppresses, controls and extinguishes fires; performs search, rescue, extrication of victims, and forcible entries; assists individuals from burning structures; establishes openings in buildings for entrance, ventilation, or salvage; ventilates smoke and gas from buildings; performs salvage operations such as throwing salvage covers, sweeping water, and removing debris; assists with cleanup activities; and exercises control of emergency situations until relieved by a superior officer.

 The Firemedic position reports to the Assistant Fire Chief, in the absence of a Lieutenant. The Village of Pleasant Prairie provides both Fire and Rescue (EMS) service to the community of Pleasant Prairie and those areas identified in the mutual aid system. The Firemedic is a highly skilled and technical position within the Fire and Rescue Department. The primary responsibility of this position is to provide rapid, effective, and efficient fire suppression, prevention, rescue (EMS) emergency, Hazardous Materials, and Technical Rescue services within the areas served by the Fire and Rescue Department. Essential Duties:

JOB SPECIFICATIONS AND QUALIFICATIONS:

Firefighting is a physically demanding and stressful job requiring great strength, endurance, and stamina. Firefighters engage in containing and extinguishing fires while wearing protective equipment, often for extended periods of time, regardless of environmental conditions. A firefighter must be able to work at heights in excess of 100 feet, rescue individuals from fire scenes and motor vehicle accidents, etc., remove and replace heavy equipment on fire department apparatus, work in confined spaces, respond to hazardous spill sites, wear a self- contained breathing apparatus, pass swim qualifications according to department SOPs and perform water-based rescue procedures as necessary, select color coded tools and equipment, and communicate via two-way radio and other technological means.

Mandatory: 
1. High school diploma or GED, at time of appointment. 
2. State of Ohio Basic and Advanced Fire training as recognized by the Ohio Department of EMS with State Certification completion within probationary period. 
3. CPR Professional Rescuer (BLS), and First Aid certification completion within probationary period.
