<b>Essential Duties and Responsibilities</b></div>
<ul><li>Performs first aid, CPR, automatic defibrillation, and medical assistance tasks as required.</li>
<li>Performs all phases of fire suppression duties, including laying hose lines, operating nozzles and master-stream devices, raising and climbing ladders, ventilation work, and salvage and overhaul operations.</li>
<li>Performs extrication and rescue operations to remove trapped victims from hazardous or life-threatening situations.</li>
<li>Participates in and conducts numerous types of training activities covering all phases of Department operations, including attendance at state and regional fire schools and seminars.</li>
<li>Drives fire apparatus, operates pump and aerial devices under both emergency and non-emergency conditions in the absence of the Driver Engineer.</li>
<li>Participates in fire prevention activities by making fire prevention and fire safety inspections of schools, churches, hospitals, and other public and private business, commercial, and industrial facilities for fire hazards and fire code violations.</li>
<li>Performs first responder duties for hazardous material calls.</li>
<li>Cleans and performs routine maintenance on fire stations and grounds, apparatus, equipment, and tools.</li>

<b>Working Environment/Physical Requirements</b><br>

Work is performed in indoor and outdoor settings under adverse and dangerous conditions and in the presence of extreme temperatures. Exposure to various hazards including elevated noise levels, vibrations from fire hoses, toxic fumes, odors, limited ventilation, hazardous materials, chemicals, body fluids including blood, hot fire gases, chilling, soaking, overheating, dust, dirt and hazards of fighting fires in general. Exposed to diesel fumes from fire trucks on a regular basis inside and outside the fire house. Visual acuity and color perception are a must. <br>An employee in this class is responsible for performing general firefighting and providing emergency medical care to patients at the accident or illness scenes. Work involves preparing all equipment for responding to fire calls, fighting fires, fire salvage, and equipment and vehicle maintenance. Work is often performed under stressful emergency conditions and frequently involves personal hazards. Work standards and procedures are well established and understood; however, considerable independence and judgment are required of the employee during a fire call. The employee is subject to hazards associated with firefighting and emergency care including working in both inside and outside environments, in extreme cold weather, and exposure to various hazards such as exposure to high heat, exposure to chemicals, and in the proximity to moving mechanical parts, electrical current, and working in high places. Employee is also exposed to atmospheric conditions and is subject to the OSHA requirements on bloodborne pathogens, and is sometimes required to wear a respirator, and may be required to work in close quarters. Work is reviewed by the fire scene commander as well as the Fire Battalion Chief through observation and discussions concerning the quality and effectiveness of fire and rescue efforts and through evaluation of the completion of training activities.
