The Oregon Military Department is a state agency that supports the Oregon National Guard. You are <b><i>NOT</i></b> required to be a member of the Oregon National Guard to apply for this position.</p><p></p><p>
The Oregon Military Department is recruiting <b>3 Permanent Wildland Fire Suppression Specialists. </b>These are permanent full-time state positions located at the Rees Training Center in <b>Hermiston, Oregon.</b></p><p>
This recruitment will remain open continuously until all three positions are filled. The first candidate list will be pulled on June 8, 2026. This recruitment may close any time after that date.</p><p></p><p>

What You Will be Doing</b><br>
The purpose of this position is to perform a wide variety of manual tasks in the areas of wildland fire prevention, pre-suppression, and fire suppression. Serves as a member or engineer operator for an engine or on a hand crew. This position is responsible for engine/crew readiness of an assigned crew. This position coordinates and/or performs physical labor necessary to suppress and extinguish wildfire. Duties include detection, pre-suppression, prevention, and suppression. Also completes routine building and ground maintenance.</p><p></p><p><b>
Working Conditions</b><br>
 Employee is expected to work in a safe and efficient manner, including reporting to work for scheduled shift with all personal protective equipment (PPE). Required to drive wildland fire engines obeying all traffic laws and drives on steep narrow forest roads. Required to work various shifts including holidays, nights, weekends, and long hours on short notice. Assignments to emergency incidents may require employee to be away from duty station for up to 21 days. Occasionally required to work under adverse conditions such as noise, smoke, heat, rough terrain, dust, inclement weather and exposure to poison oak, bees and poisonous snakes. Requires occasional exposure to heavy equipment operations, aircraft, hazards of burning and/or falling material, and chemical and biological pesticides.</p><p></p><p><b>

Under direction of the Fire Lieutenant or above, the Vallen Firefighter will perform a wide variety of administrative and technical tasks and functions in support of fire suppression, fire prevention, hazardous materials, emergency medical and other emergency services. Firefighters will inspect, test, provide maintenance and repairs to Life Safety Equipment to include fire extinguishers, hoses, monitors, respirators (SCBA), etc. Vallen Firefighters will also provide appropriate documentation ensuring accurate testing and repair.</p>

</p><p></p><p>Area of responsibility involves approximately 171,000 acres of land consisting of 53,500 acres in the impact area and the remaining 117,900 acres of maneuver area. The OCTC/Training Site contains over 140 permanent, temporary, and semi-permanent structures with approximately 754,503 square feet.
