Performs forestry services, such as firebreak plowing, waterbar construction and prescribed burning assistance. Assists foresters and Sector FMO's with forest management activities such as timber marking, tree planting, survival checks, forest insect and disease work, acreage measurements, and other landowner services. Maintains an awareness of the cost-sharing assistance and services provided by the SCFC. Works with fire departments, the US Forest Service, civic groups, and other local, state, and federal agencies to promote sound forestry and fire management practices.</li><li><div>
Participates in training annually. Prepares monthly administrative reports to include time sheets, equipment reports, services reports and fire-related documentation.</div></li><li>
Participates in activities in support of the agency's mission and goals and performs related other duties as required.</li></ul></div><br>

<p></p><div><ul><li>A high school diploma and experience in forest fire protection duties, forestry management, operation of heavy mechanized equipment, or relevant work experience.</li><li>
Must pass the agency&rsquo;s initial physical fitness test that requires a two (2) mile walk carrying a 25 lb. pack in 30 minutes or meet the agency&rsquo;s physical fitness program requirements.</li><li>
Must obtain firefighter registration with the Office of State Fire Marshal.</li><li>
Criminal background check and drug test are required.</li><li>
Position requires a Class A Commercial Driver&rsquo;s License (CDL). Must have Commercial Learner's Permit (CLP) prior to employment. Suppress fires at the direction of the Incident Supervisor, through the use of standard firefighting techniques by using such equipment as fire engines, fire extinguishers, emergency generators, radio equipment, air packs, safety equipment, gas masks, protective clothing and patrol vehicles.</li></ul><div>
</div><ul><li>
Train fire agency staff and other agency fire personnel in the methods and techniques of fire prevention and control. Update fire and safety posters to promote public awareness of fire safety.</li></ul><div>
</div><ul><li>
Calculate the daily fire ratings, using the National Fire Danger Rating System Guidelines, by calculating indices of the fire weather system using remote automated weather stations, facility weather stations, field calculations and information provided by the National Weather Services. Provide the fire danger rating to all fire departments within the Commonwealth on a daily basis.</li></ul><div>

Keep firefighting equipment in proper condition by performing routine maintenance and inspection to ensure preparedness for emergency situations.</li></ul><div></div><div><br>

Perform relates work such as conferring with other governmental units regarding firefighting and fire prevention maintaining routine records and files and preparing inspection accident and federal fire reports.</li></ul><div>

Perform initial size-up of emergency or dangerous situations, take appropriate actions and report to the appropriate person as designated through the chain of command.</li></ul><div>

Conduct assigned fire management planned duties and pre-suppression activities.</li></ul><div>

While performing the duties of this classification, incumbents work under exposure to the hazards associated with fires and hazardous chemicals. Incumbents work outdoors in varying terrain. Incumbents may be exposed to all kinds of weather and environmental and biological hazards (e.g. smoke, diesel fumes, ticks, snags, etc.). Incumbents may work in isolated areas for considerable lengths of time, including in enclosed spaces up to 100 feet in the air (i.e. fire towers). The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate but may be noisy. Incumbents may be required to work at emergency incidents for extended hours, nights, weekends or holidays and may be subject to on-call status. Incumbents may be required to travel and may be exposed to traffic and other roadway or travel-related hazards.</div><div><b><br>

While performing the duties of the classification, incumbents are required to climb a ladder of up to 35 feet and climb open stairways of up to 100 feet. Incumbents are required to perform physically demanding work with hand tools, power tools and saws, and brush cutting power equipment. Incumbents are required to be able to walk a distance of two miles while carrying a pack of 25 pounds. Incumbents may be required to lift, carry, push or pull up to 100 pounds with or without assistance and with or without the use of devices and/or equipment to assist in the lifting effort.
