Baptist Health is hiring an Infection Prevention Specialist. This is a full-time, in-person opportunity located at Baptist South.
The role demonstrates knowledge of Infection Prevention and Control (IPC) through certification and applies their knowledge and experience to guide practice while learning more advanced concepts. The position is responsible for collaborating to develop, implement and sustain effective IPC strategies.
Leadership: Implements and monitors IPC program and practices. Collaborates to align IPC program goals with organizational goals. Provides mentorship to IPs and seeks mentorship from experienced IPs. Infection Prevention &amp; Control Operations: Applies epidemiologic principles and uses appropriate benchmarks. Evaluates the significance of surveillance and investigational findings to make recommendations for improvement. Evaluates the effectiveness of surveillance plans and modifies as necessary. Creates education program(s) to meet the needs and learning styles of the audience. Conducts IPC assessments and/or rounding and communicates findings and recommendations. Infection Prevention &amp; Control Informatics: Uses technology to identify disease and illness trends. Validates systems to ensure accurate data. Utilizes applicable reporting systems as required. Performs data management, analysis, and visualization. 
Quality Improvement: Participates with analysis to identify system failure elements and areas of improvement. Uses data and statistical techniques to describe data, calculate risk-adjusted rates and establish benchmarks. Evaluates findings and make recommendations for improvement. Performs risk assessments and develops action plans that include goals and measurable objectives. Professional Stewardship: Collaborates with internal and/or external partners to promote health and positive clinical outcomes for the larger community and continuum of care. Research: Review research findings to determine whether to implement findings. Participates and may lead research and quality improvement projects. Disseminates relevant research findings through practice, education, and/or consultation.

The Infection Preventionist Nurse This individual is accountable for decreasing the incidence and transmission of infectious diseases between patients, staff, visitors and the community. Through strategic planning, leadership and consultation, you will lead and direct a robust team in the identification and implementation of infection prevention goals and objectives throughout the facility.
The Infection Preventionist reports to the Director of Nursing and partners with the Medical Director and Pharmacist for Antimicrobial Stewardship, the QA Committee, and other stakeholders to develop a system of care that promotes sound and scientific infection prevention principles and practices.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Provide guidance and education to patients and families on infection control measures applies epidemiologic principles and statistical methods, including risk stratification, to identify target population, analyze trends and risk factors, and design and evaluate prevention and control strategies. Participates in investigations of unusual hospital infection outbreaks utilizing the microbiology laboratory, consultation with Infectious Disease specialists, county/state public health departments, and when necessary, in consultation with the Center for Disease Control. Report epidemiologically significant findings to appropriate customers. Collect data in support of epidemiological studies of specific problems or problem areas to determine the source of the problem and make appropriate recommendations. Conduct on-going surveillance using Center of Disease Control (CDC) infection criteria, documentation, and investigation of hospital-acquired infections through review of admission diagnoses, microbiology culture results, isolation orders, patient records, , post-discharge surveillance, and other pertinent information.
</li><li>Conduct environmental rounds in all inpatient and outpatient care areas with either the Safety Officer and/or Departmental Director Collect data on the incidence of selected device use in identified patient care units. Assess environmental control through surveillance of water supply systems, temperature, humidity and air pressure relationships.
</li><li>Develop and update isolation techniques and procedures in accordance with current standards of practice, rules and regulations. Participate in maintaining policies and procedures which provide for a program of preventive medicine for hospital personnel to include establishment of policies and procedures relating to exposure to infectious diseases and prevention of cross-contamination. Recommend and evaluate procedures or policy statements relating to infection prevention/control within TCRHCC; maintain an updated reference manual on infectious diseases and hospital infection control as recommended by The Joint Commission.
</li><li>Evaluate the effectiveness of the surveillance plan and modifies as necessary.
</li><li>Report all in-house patients with communicable disease to the Tribal, county and/or state health departments and maintain appropriate records. Compile and interpret surveillance reports to Infection Prevention committee, specialty areas, nursing and executive medical committee on a regular basis. Select indicators based on the projected use of the data. Plan and participate in the budget process.
</li><li>Participate in quality/performance improvement activities by assessing, monitoring, and measuring hospital-acquired infections and evaluating outcomes on a continuous basis. Reports any interference for the implementation of infection control practices
</li><li>Assist in the organization of regularly scheduled Hospital Infection Prevention and Epi-Response team meetings and dissemination of recommendations hospital-wide.
</li><li>Assist with development and evaluation of the Annual Infection Prevention Control Plan and Annual Report.</li><li>
Plan, organize, develop, assist and/or implement educational programs for all hospital employees including administrative and ancillary services which convey specialized knowledge and skills to increase employee awareness of existence of hospital-acquired infections; techniques for avoidance and preventive measures to provide a safe environment for staff and patients. Such as but not limited to; Operating Room, Sterile Processing, equipment sterilization, environmental service cleaning guidelines.</li><li>
Develop effective and relevant teaching tools appropriate in scope and complexity for the internal audience. Serve as a knowledgeable and available resource on infection prevention/control practices and policies to patients, families, staff, and health system employees. Maintain a knowledge base of current infection prevention and control information through peer networking, internet access, published literature and professional meetings.</li><li>
Participate in continuing educational activities at the department, state, and national levels to promote professional growth and maintain a current knowledge base commensurate with latest research and scholarly knowledge.
</li><li>Maintain compliance with national standards and regulating bodies such as The Joint Commission (TJC), Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Occupational Safety and Health Administration(OSHA), The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the Centers for Medicare &amp; Medicaid Services (CMS).

As an Infection Preventionist you will be part of a strong team that works closely with clinical staff and hospital leaders to promote world class patient care. POSITION SUMMARY 
This position assists the supervisor in organizing and directing the activities of the infection control program for all departments throughout a facility or ambulatory setting, including surveillance, infection prevention and control measures, and education for employees. 
 
CORE FUNCTIONS 
1. Conducts focused surveillance for healthcare-associated infections (HAIs), detects and records HAIs on a systematic and current basis, analyzes HAIs and prepares reports for the Infection Control Committee of the facility or ambulatory setting. Reports communicable diseases as required by regulation. 
 
2. Makes recommendations when problems are identified. Interprets department policies and procedures in conjunction with the supervisor. 
 
3. Interacts with physicians, nurses, department managers, supervisors, and other professional and non-professional staff members as a consultant. 
 
4. Enters data into computer, prepares reports, conducts analytical studies and summarizes surveillance data. 
 
5. Initiates epidemiological investigations of significant clusters of infections and single cases of unusual infection. 
 
6. Assists with continuing infection control education and inservice programs to departments, including orientation for new employees. 
 
7. Reviews and assists with evaluation of hospital policies, procedures and guidelines as they relate to infection control. Assists in writing and revising infection control policies and procedures. 
 
8. Makes recommendations regarding construction, renovation, environmental rounds, and assures compliance with national and/or professional standards. 
 
9. Department responsibility only, although is involved in system-wide infection control activities. Customers are internal: physicians, employees, managers, volunteers, students, patients and external: public health agencies, general public. 
 
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS 
 
Requires a current RN license with BSN preferred, OR Masters in Public Health (MPH), OR certified medical technologist, OR a bachelor's degree in healthcare related field.
After completing 2 years as a full-time FTE or 4 years as a part-time FTE or 4 years as a BSS in the position and attaining Infection Prevention work experience, the Staff Infection Preventionist will have 6 months to achieve the Certification of Infection Control (CIC).
Infection Prevention Team members working primarily in an acute or ambulatory job location will be expected to maintain an active Basic Life Skills certification. 
Must have a minimum of two years clinical experience in a hospital setting or disease surveillance experience in a public health setting. 
 
Employees working at Banner Behavioral Health Hospital, BTMC Behavioral, and BUMG, BUMCT, or BUMCS in a Behavioral Health clinical setting that serves children must possess an Arizona Fingerprint Clearance Card at the time of hire and maintain the card for the duration of their employment. An Arizona Criminal History Affidavit must be signed upon hire. 
 
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS 
Association for Practitioners in Infection Control (APIC) training course or equivalent desired. Computer skills, research and basic statistical knowledge is preferred. 
 
Additional related education and/or experience preferred.
