Job Summary
 The Correctional Officer/Dispatcher is responsible for the communication between the public and the law enforcement officers, ambulances and fire departments. Provide courtroom security for Judge, court personnel, jury and all participants. Supervise inmates in accordance with established policies, regulations and procedures, observe conduct and behavior of inmates to prevent disturbances and escapes. This position is essential as required by the MN Department of Corrections. Duties are interchangeable depending on department needs and requirements. Assigned tasks may vary from day to day.

This position provides care and supervision of inmates housed in the jail facility. Other duties involved are transporting inmates, juveniles, and mentally ill; performing all intake procedures for incoming prisoners; supervising the daily housing area and periodically must subdue prisoners.

Prior knowledge of jailing procedures, law enforcement or criminal justice background is a plus but not required. We will train qualified individuals. Must be willing and able to work a variety of assigned shifts. Must be able to perform CPR and emergency first aid.

POSITION OBJECTIVE:

Performs a variety of routine and specialized public safety works in the care and custody of prisoners. Maintains order and discipline among prisoners. 


ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: 


Perform all intake procedures for incoming prisoners including pat searches, data collection record keeping, photographing, finger printing and further processing.

Maintains security in all areas of the jail and holding areas. Jailors must physically subdue violent prisoners who may assault, intent on escape, who may be under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

Responsible for supervising additional programs: AA, church, probation visits, healthcare professionals, department of correction hearings, ADA, GED, library and recreation.

Responsible for knowledge of communications equipment: telephone, paging, teletypes, radio, and criminal justice information system information, records management system, in a professional and secure manner.

Perform security patrol of the jail including accesses within the jail perimeters inside and outside.

Carry out duties in confirmation with Federal, State, and County policies, and City laws and ordinances.

Conduct daily cell inspections and searches when needed. Supervise the daily routine of the inmates including the issuance of clothing, bedding, and distribution of medication and the feeding of all inmates.

Ensure the safety and security of inmates and staff, while simultaneously ensuring the security aspects of the facility. The ability to perform emergency first aide and lifesaving techniques.

Distribute medication, when qualified. Work with health care professional, inmate sick call, doctors, dentist, assist ambulance, safety, and security of medical risk inmates.

Coordinate activities and exchange information with other law enforcement agencies, Department of Corrections, County Attorney&rsquo;s Office, probation, courts, social services, treatment centers and the public.

Responsible for overall physical features of the jail to ensure that heating, cooling, water supply, electrical including emergency generator, and sanitary conditions are continually maintained.

May serve as a member of various employee committees.

Responsible for a variety of reports and records: daily logs (computer and handwritten) incident reports, discipline reports, bookings, releases, pay-for-stay, predatory offender records, medical records, telephonics.

Responsible to transport prisoners to and from court appearances, from other law enforcement agencies, juvenile detention, correctional facilities, and medical facilities.

Maintain the upkeep of jail supplies such as: canteen, linen, cleaning supplies, hygiene supplies, office supplies, intoxilizor, and first aid supplies.

Responsible for handling money such as: bail money, prisoner accounts, and bonds, cash fines, receipting and recording of all money transactions, issuing checks.

Maintain face-to-face communications with inmates while performing a variety of routine tasks ensuring that the jail environment operates smoothly, safely, and effectively.

Perform any additional duties as may be assigned by the supervisor to ensure effective operations of the jail and maximum compliance with applicable laws, regulations, standards, and policies

The principal function of a sworn employee in this class is to perform security duties to ensure the safety and security of the County detention center. Work is performed under the direct supervision of a Sergeant. Some latitude is granted to the employee but work is subject to stringent state and County legal guidelines. The principal duties of this class are performed in a work environment in which the employee is subject to potential personal danger, injury, and health hazards. 
 
Essential Duties and Responsibilities 
<ul><li>Monitors the activities of the staff and inmates in the County detention facility to ensure the safety and security of the facility;</li><li>Communicate effectively with other employees via two-way radio transmissions, email, verbal and written forms to relay and receive important information;</li><li>Monitors the activities of the staff and inmates to ensure standards, policies, and procedures are implemented and followed;</li><li>Monitors the activities of the staff and inmates to ensure the rights of inmates are protected;</li><li>Processes new inmates into the facility, including fingerprinting, photography, physical search, processing documents, data entry, housing assignment, clothing issuance, and related booking duties;</li><li>Arrests suspects/inmates on warrants and serves warrants as necessary following proper process and procedures;</li><li>Performs release duties, including checking court orders, records, and related paperwork to ensure proper disposition;</li><li>Maintains facility security by patrolling the secure areas within and around the detention center, following policies, procedures, and established timelines;</li><li>Maintains facility security by monitoring and operating electronic doors, monitoring internal radio traffic, and operating security systems;</li><li>Monitor fire alarm emergency panels and advises Detention Deputies of the emergency. Acceptable Experience and Training

General Definition of Work:
 
Performs intermediate protective service work conducting criminal offender interviews, monitoring offender locations

The LEAP Project is designed to provide transitioning reentrants from the Northampton County Prison and Lehigh County Jail with critical job readiness and employability skills they need to get and keep a job once released by creating and operating an American Job Center, called the LEAP-Center, in the Jail. The LEAP Reentry Employment Specialist serves as the liaison between Northampton County Prison, Lehigh County Jail, parole offices, PA CareerLink&reg; Lehigh Valley and the LVWIB staff. The Reentry Employment Specialist supports program participants in the successful transition of LEAP pre-employment services received in the Jail to services received at the PA CareerLink&reg; Lehigh Valley site upon release from jail.
