Official Court Reporters are responsible for the verbatim reporting of proceedings held before United States District Judges and Magistrate Judges and for the transcription of those proceedings upon request. </b></p><p>Position reports, transcribes, and serves as the guardian of the verbatim stenographic record of official court proceedings in an accurate, impartial, and confidential manner. Duties may include:

</p><p>Graduation from an accredited or non-accredited court reporting school with a Registered Professional Reporter (RPR) certification and the ability to type 225 words per minute with 95% accuracy. South Dakota Notary Public is required to swear in witnesses in the courtroom. No experience is necessary.
</p><p>Successful completion of a criminal background investigation is required for employment.
</p><p>5% increase in salary after successful completion of CRR (Certified Real-time Reporter) certification.
</p><p>The fee for the preparation of a transcript from a court reporter's notes of evidence is $3.60 per page for the original. The fee for a copy, furnished on request, is $0.65 per page, to be paid to the officer of the court who prepared the transcript. Depending on the location transcript work can be moderate to extensive. Court reporters may be allowed to freelance and perform outside depositional work that does not involve the recording and/or transcribing of official judicial system court proceedings outside of normal office hours and for additional compensation as court calendars permit.

<br>The Court Services Department at the South Carolina Judicial Branch is seeking a motivated individual to join our team as a Court Reporter Supervisor. The Court Reporter Supervisor serves as one of the primary points of oversight for the Court Reporter unit, ensuring all court proceedings are adequately staffed with qualified court reporters. The position also shares leadership responsibilities in the absence of theCourt Reporter Manager and contributes to the ongoing training and development of new and existing staff.ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE POSITION This job bulletin represents general duties for this position and is not intended to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned. Manages the daily operations of the Court Reporting unit, supervising court reporters and ensuring scheduled court terms are adequately staffed. Coordinates assignments, updates schedules, and serves as liaison to Judges Scheduling. Resolves scheduling conflicts independently to prevent cancellations. Reviews travel justifications and monitors timesheets and reports for compliance.Oversees supervisory functions for court reporters, including performance counseling and disciplinary recommendations. Manages the hiring process, from job descriptions to interviews and onboarding. Coordinates IT setup and training for new hires, ensures compliance with policies, approves timesheets and leave, and consults with HR on FMLA matters.Shares responsibility for monitoring CR Hotline after regular work hours/weekends/holidays; daily logging of Hotline calls; reviews and approves CR travel vouchers and reimbursement requests. Becomes familiar with Family and Circuit Monthly Terms of Court. Communicate with judges, reporters, clerks, attorneys, and the public. Monitors transcript requests, extension approvals, and report submissions, referring issues to the Unit Manager as needed.Assists with digital audio recordkeeping and audits; familiarity with the 16 judicial circuits to effectively schedule CRs to terms of court, keeping in mind travel miles, costs, and workload; maintains and assists with the archiving of past Terms of Court Schedules, forms, CR employee files and records. Prepare and maintain records and monthly reports detailing statistics vital to the operation of SCJB and Court Services. Conduct research for Court Services staff as needed or directed. Review, evaluate, revise, and develop forms in accordance with SCJB policies and procedures, statutes, and court rules.Inputs and maintains CRs into two current data systems: SCJB intranet (rosters) and CR Transcript Tracking System; receives and routes transcript extension requests; responds to non-standard inmate letters; assists with revamping of CR personnel and correspondence recordkeeping system. Acts as Court Reporter Manager in their absence, making decisions to ensure court operations proceed smoothly. Approves or denies leave and timesheets, represents the unit in meetings, and assists with developing and delivering presentations.Provide assistance with the Digital Courtroom Recorder Project (DCRP) by developing and conducting new hire and refresher training for staff hired to operate the digital courtroom recorder equipment. Adheres to common principles of professionalism to include being punctual and prepared; dressed in accordance with SCJB's dress code; being courteous and civil in all interactions; and exercising the highest levels of professional integrity in the disposition of the job responsibilities.Performs other related duties as assigned.

The Digital Court Reporter I serves both the Circuit and Family Courts by accurately capturing the record according to the policies and procedures prescribed in relevant statutes and court rules. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE POSITION Note: This job bulletin represents general duties for this position and is not intended to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned. Attends court proceedings and creates verbatim recordings by operating electronic audio recording equipment provided by SCJB to create a clear and complete quality audio recording of legal proceedings. Verifies proper operation of the equipment prior to court proceedings and troubleshoots issues with designated IT support team so as to avoid delays and disruptions to court.Creates accurate and detailed electronic time-linked annotations of case events and terminology to serve as a guide to assist the creation of an accurate transcript. Plays back testimony during proceedings at the direction of the presiding judge.Receives, inventories, records, and maintains exhibits entered as evidence in court. Files case exhibits with Clerk of Court in compliance with applicable laws, rules, and regulations. Retains a receipt of delivery to the Clerk's office.Adheres to common principles of professionalism to include being punctual and prepared; dressed in accordance with SCJB's dress code; and being courteous and civil when interacting with the judge, counsel, parties, clerk's staff, and the public.Remains as a neutral observer during court proceedings, refrains from causing disruptions to the proceedings; and exercises the highest levels of professional integrity in the disposition of job responsibilities. <br>MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS (EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE) High school diploma.Verified current credentials as a Certified Electronic/Digital Court Reporter by the American Association of Electronic Reporters and Transcribers (AAERT). Successful completion of an AAERT approved Electronic/Digital Court Reporting Program from an institution of higher education may be substituted for the required credentials as a Certified Electronic/Digital Court Reporter. One (1) year of legal experience with a thorough knowledge of hearing procedures.Minimum typing speed of 60 wpm with a high rate of accuracy.Computer and word processing experience and ability to operate digital recording equipment. Must be able to maintain concentration and sit in a courtroom for extended periods of time.Must have dependable transportation as this position will require occasional travel to courthouses throughout the circuit. Punctuality and avoidance of excessive absences required..REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND OTHER CHARACTERISTICS Knowledge: General knowledge of nationally recognized court reporter practices and procedures.Specific knowledge of court reporter policies, procedures, and practices as outlined in the SC Court Reporters Manual.
