The Travis County Juvenile Probation Department (TCJPD) is seeking positive, assertive, reliable, and confident individuals to serve as role models for youth staying in our short-term Juvenile Detention facility. Juvenile Detention Officers provide for the day-to-day direct supervision of youth detained in a 24-hour pre-adjudication detention program. Officers maintain the safety and security of detained youth, ensure the health and welfare of each juvenile, counsel clients on an individual basis, and facilitate cognitive skills groups to assist juveniles in developing appropriate coping skills and prosocial behaviors. Juvenile Detention Officers implement appropriate programs for clients and document client behavior in accordance with department policies and procedures and all applicable standards. The ideal candidate for this position will have a unique opportunity to serve, protect and have a positive impact on the lives of youth from various backgrounds and communities. Detention Services&rsquo; mission is to provide competency development, accountability, welfare, and community protection.<br>

The Detention Services Program provides for the detention of male and female juveniles who are awaiting disposition of their cases by the court Services are provided 7 days a week, 24 hours a day, in a secure pre-adjudication facility. Services offered include classroom instruction by Austin Independent School District teachers, Counseling Services and recreational activities.<br>

Please note: This position requires that you be available to work a non-traditional work schedule to include evenings, weekends, and holidays. You are required to work any of the following shifts: 6:00 AM to 2:00 PM; 2:00 PM to 10:00 PM; and 10:00 PM to 6:00 AM. upon hire, and the Department may reassign you to a different shift when a business need arises in order to meet operational needs:<br>

<br>The Juvenile Supervision Officer II performs work supervising juveniles in department’s secure facilities to ensure their safety and welfare, shift coverage, and transporting juveniles between jails, medical institutions, schools, and other locations. This position is responsible for providing training and mentoring for new and inexperienced staff that models proper section management and proper techniques for supervising juveniles in custody, including the proper ways to address serious behavioral issues and crisis management.

EXAMPLE OF DUTIES
<br>Performs all essential duties of a Juvenile Supervision Officer I, to include providing direct supervision of detained or referred youth and ensures the youth follow facility rules, taking disciplinary action as necessary. Leads, trains, guides, assesses and assists Juvenile Supervision Officers in housing unit management, resident supervision, and proper actions to be taken in a variety of situations pertaining to secure juvenile facility operations and juvenile behavior management. Administers the 90-day on-the-job training program to newly hired employees. Supervises facility resident duties such as setting up for and serving meals, loading and unloading of materials at the docks, performing laundry detail, supervising facility cleaning activities, and performing kitchen detail and inspecting for cleanliness. Assist the Detention Intake Unit and Post-Adjudication caseworkers with processing juveniles presented for admission to the facility. Advises facility residents of rules and regulations. Ensures daily meal count form is completed for all meals and snacks to be served on the assigned shift. Performs exterior perimeter checks of the entire facility, JJAEP, and Juvenile Probation areas to search for contraband, identify escape risks, and maintain safety and order. Issues clothing supervises showers and ensures adequate supplies are maintained for shift operations. Reports physical plant issues to Shift Supervisors and Shift Leaders so that work orders can be prepared and submitted in a timely manner. Maintains physical inventory of all equipment, materials, and supplies for assigned work area in the Juvenile Detention Center and/or Post-Adjudication Secure Correctional Facility. Regular and punctual attendance is required.Performs other related duties as required.

JOB DESCRIPTION
<br>Primarily responsible for the supervision of juveniles certified as adults and pending trial who will be housed in the Juvenile Detention Facilities pursuant to further orders of the court or in some instances a certified juvenile may be transferred to an Adult Detention facility by order of the court.
<br>RESPONSIBILITIES
<br>1. Provides direct day-to-day supervision to juveniles in a 24-hour detention/jail facility in manner that ensures the health, safety and welfare of each youth.
<br><br>
2. Provides intervention techniques to all juveniles to promote and increase personal awareness of responsibilities and alternatives.
<br><br>
3. Provides critical sound judgment and decisions during crisis or potentially dangerous situations, conducts crisis intervention, and notifies the supervisor of concerns.
<br><br>
4. Disciplines juveniles by enforcing the rules of the facility/jail, monitors behavior and other specific information and forwards to appropriate personnel. Accurately documents juveniles’ behavior and activities in observation logs and incident reports.
<br><br>
5.Enters data into AIS–adult system as well as coordinating hearings in the adult court, communicates with clerks of the courts, and possibly District Attorney and Public Defenders.
<br><br>
6. Serves as back-up to staff and assumes all duties as necessary, i.e., administering medications, transporting youths to appointments, processing intake assessments or discharges, and disciplining youths. Must be physically able to perform “handling with care techniques, including takedowns, chasing and restraining youth” as outlined in the Texas Juvenile Justice Department (TJJD) requirement.

Two (2) years of work related experience.

<b>Special Requirements/Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:</b><br>
Ability to effectively communicate both orally and in writing, and establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, departments and the general public. Must be certified as a JSO within 180 days of hire date. Must have current Red Cross First Aid/CPR certification or obtain within 90 days of hire. Must maintain 40 hours of training yearly.  Initiate contact with the youth, family, victims, and law enforcement when referrals are received by the Florida Department of Juvenile Justice (FDJJ). Conduct home and school visits as an integral part of the information gathering process and family involvement model.

 Obtain and review collateral information such as abuse and neglect history, educational, mental health, substance use, gang related activity and other pertinent information from other agencies involved with the youth and/or family.
 <br/>
 <br/>
 Conduct and document FDJJ screening(s), to identify the youth&rsquo;s risk and needs, protective factors and/or the need for further evaluations, including but not limited to detention screening, intake screening, Suicide Risk Screening Instrument, and any Department approved risk/needs screening and/or assessment instrument(s).

 Formulate case management strategies based on assessments and/or information gathered to address the specific needs of the youth and family.

 Complete a risk and needs assessment using the appropriate Department approved instrument(s) for all youth screened/supervised by the department.

 Conduct face-to-face contacts in the home, school and varied community-based settings by interacting with the youth, family and community during non-traditional hours (weekends and evening hours) in addition to business hours.
 <br/>
 <br/>
 Maintain communication based on departmental requirements for all stages of youth and family involvement; gain firsthand knowledge of where the youth resides, the family, the youth&rsquo;s immediate and extended environment by meeting in different locations, including the detention centers, schools, homes, out-of-home placements, place of employment, community sites, other agencies, treatment providers and offices.

 Assist the youth with obtaining appropriate mental health, substance abuse evaluations based on administered assessments, and arrange for specialized testing and treatment, as needed.
 <br/>
 <br/>
 Assist youth and family with school and after school enrollment; maintain school contact, verifying school attendance, academic performance, and behavior.
 <br/>
 <br/>
 Provide crisis intervention; assist the youth and family in accessing crisis intervention services/resources by making necessary referrals and follow-up on actions taken.
 <br/>
 <br/>
 Work with the youth to establish personal goals/ plans and provide ongoing support to help youth achieve their goals and maintain skills.
 <br/>
 <br/>
 Discuss with youth and family projected timeframes for completion of goals, sanctions/conditions of supervision and anticipated date for termination of supervision based on progress and as ordered by the court.
 <br/>
 <br/>
 Respond to concerns, needs, and risks as presented by youth, family, and the community by staffing cases, plans or violations with the unit supervisor in accordance with existing departmental policies, procedures, administrative rules, and FL statutes. Determine recommended handling of law violations and provide appropriate interventions when a youth violates the conditions of supervision based on the Effective Response Matrix and follow up on actions taken in response to a violation.

 Conduct staffing when benchmarks occur, case milestones are achieved by the youth and or family or case is complex and in need of additional considerations (i.e. when youth is still securely detained a certain number of days pre-adjudication or post disposition, or beyond a timeframe identified in statute, when youth have completed all court ordered requirements and conditions of supervision, or violated supervision, and when transition and exit conferences are scheduled for a set number of days prior to the youth&rsquo;s release from residential commitment, complex cases).

 Participate in transition and exit planning to finalize plans for the youth pending release from residential programs, which includes referrals for post-residential services to for mental health, substance abuse, education and workforce services.

Licenses that have Corrective Lenses Restriction are acceptable, provided the driver wears corrective lenses while operating the vehicle.

 Positions that include the transportation of youth while performing any work or work-related functions on behalf of DJJ, require: (1) a valid driver&rsquo;s license; and (2) a three-year acceptable driving record as defined in FDJJ Policy 1920.

 Successful candidate must be certified in accordance with State of Florida Department of Juvenile Justice direct care training policy or obtain such certification within 180 days of employment. In order to obtain certification, the candidate must attend and successfully complete a mandatory residential training academy located in Quincy Florida. Such certification must be maintained.

 <br/>
 For those candidates who are not currently in the state system as a direct care worker for DJJ at the time of application, the top-ranking candidate(s) after the interview phase will be required to take and pass Ergometric's IMPACT Assessment and Training Test in order to be considered for this direct-care employment opportunity. This test will be used to measure the candidate's overall suitability for working with Juvenile Justice involved youth. Test results will be used for a period of six months after initial testing for candidates who reapply during that period for another position for which testing is required.

 Be at least 19 years of age.

 Be a high school graduate or its equivalent as determined by the department.

 Not have been convicted of any felony or a misdemeanor involving perjury or false statement or have received a dishonorable discharge from any of the Armed Forces of the United States. Any person, who after September 30, 1999, pleads guilty or no lo contendere to or is found guilty of any felony or a misdemeanor involving perjury or false statement is not eligible for employment, notwithstanding suspension of sentence or withholding of adjudication. Notwithstanding this subparagraph, any person who plead no lo contendere to a misdemeanor involving a false statement before October 1, 1999, and who has had such record of that plea sealed or expunged is not ineligible for employment for that reason.
