The Travis County Juvenile Probation Department (TCJPD) is seeking positive, assertive, reliable, and confident individuals to serve as role models for youth staying in our short-term Juvenile Detention facility. Juvenile Detention Officers provide for the day-to-day direct supervision of youth detained in a 24-hour pre-adjudication detention program. Officers maintain the safety and security of detained youth, ensure the health and welfare of each juvenile, counsel clients on an individual basis, and facilitate cognitive skills groups to assist juveniles in developing appropriate coping skills and prosocial behaviors. Juvenile Detention Officers implement appropriate programs for clients and document client behavior in accordance with department policies and procedures and all applicable standards. The Detention Services Program provides for the detention of male and female juveniles who are awaiting disposition of their cases by the court Services are provided 7 days a week, 24 hours a day, in a secure pre-adjudication facility. Services offered include classroom instruction by Austin Independent School District teachers, Counseling Services and recreational activities.<br>

Please note: This position requires that you be available to work a non-traditional work schedule to include evenings, weekends, and holidays. You are required to work any of the following shifts: 6:00 AM to 2:00 PM; 2:00 PM to 10:00 PM; and 10:00 PM to 6:00 AM. upon hire, and the Department may reassign you to a different shift when a business need arises in order to meet operational needs:<br>

JOB DESCRIPTION
<br>Primarily responsible for the supervision of juveniles certified as adults and pending trial who will be housed in the Juvenile Detention Facilities pursuant to further orders of the court or in some instances a certified juvenile may be transferred to an Adult Detention facility by order of the court.
<br>RESPONSIBILITIES
<br>1. Provides direct day-to-day supervision to juveniles in a 24-hour detention/jail facility in manner that ensures the health, safety and welfare of each youth.
<br><br>
2. Provides intervention techniques to all juveniles to promote and increase personal awareness of responsibilities and alternatives.
<br><br>
3. Provides critical sound judgment and decisions during crisis or potentially dangerous situations, conducts crisis intervention, and notifies the supervisor of concerns.
<br><br>
4. Disciplines juveniles by enforcing the rules of the facility/jail, monitors behavior and other specific information and forwards to appropriate personnel. Accurately documents juveniles’ behavior and activities in observation logs and incident reports.
<br><br>
5.Enters data into AIS–adult system as well as coordinating hearings in the adult court, communicates with clerks of the courts, and possibly District Attorney and Public Defenders.
<br><br>
6. Serves as back-up to staff and assumes all duties as necessary, i.e., administering medications, transporting youths to appointments, processing intake assessments or discharges, and disciplining youths. Must be physically able to perform “handling with care techniques, including takedowns, chasing and restraining youth” as outlined in the Texas Juvenile Justice Department (TJJD) requirement.

7. May transports juveniles to and from appointments.

8. Conducts routine inspections, rounds and drills, which include room checks and pat down searches of juveniles.

<br>QUALIFICATIONS
<br><br>
<b>Education, Experience and Training:</b><br>
Education and experience equivalent to an Associate’s degree from an accredited college or university in Criminology, Corrections, Counseling, Law, Social Work, Psychology, Sociology, Cultural Anthropology, Business Management, Public Administration, or in a job related field of study. Two (2) years of work related experience.
<br><br>
<b>Special Requirements/Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:</b><br>
Ability to effectively communicate both orally and in writing, and establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, departments and the general public. Must be certified as a JSO within 180 days of hire date. Must have current Red Cross First Aid/CPR certification or obtain within 90 days of hire. Must maintain 40 hours of training yearly. Proficiency in using word processing, spreadsheet and database software. Must be certified as required by applicable standards of the facility/department assigned. Must possess a valid Texas driver’s license, with a good driving record. Must pass an extensive background investigation. Mandatory drug testing prior to employment and will be subject to random, unannounced drug and/or alcohol testing during employment. The employee will also be subject to shift changes based on the needs of the facility.

<br>The Juvenile Supervision Officer II performs work supervising juveniles in department’s secure facilities to ensure their safety and welfare, shift coverage, and transporting juveniles between jails, medical institutions, schools, and other locations. This position is responsible for providing training and mentoring for new and inexperienced staff that models proper section management and proper techniques for supervising juveniles in custody, including the proper ways to address serious behavioral issues and crisis management.

<br>Performs all essential duties of a Juvenile Supervision Officer I, to include providing direct supervision of detained or referred youth and ensures the youth follow facility rules, taking disciplinary action as necessary. Leads, trains, guides, assesses and assists Juvenile Supervision Officers in housing unit management, resident supervision, and proper actions to be taken in a variety of situations pertaining to secure juvenile facility operations and juvenile behavior management. Administers the 90-day on-the-job training program to newly hired employees. Supervises facility resident duties such as setting up for and serving meals, loading and unloading of materials at the docks, performing laundry detail, supervising facility cleaning activities, and performing kitchen detail and inspecting for cleanliness. Assist the Detention Intake Unit and Post-Adjudication caseworkers with processing juveniles presented for admission to the facility. Advises facility residents of rules and regulations. Ensures daily meal count form is completed for all meals and snacks to be served on the assigned shift. Performs exterior perimeter checks of the entire facility, JJAEP, and Juvenile Probation areas to search for contraband, identify escape risks, and maintain safety and order. Issues clothing supervises showers and ensures adequate supplies are maintained for shift operations. Reports physical plant issues to Shift Supervisors and Shift Leaders so that work orders can be prepared and submitted in a timely manner. Maintains physical inventory of all equipment, materials, and supplies for assigned work area in the Juvenile Detention Center and/or Post-Adjudication Secure Correctional Facility. <ul><li>Maintains custody and control of juveniles in a custodial security setting or performs related special assignments.
</li><li>At beginning level, supervises and monitors activities of detained juveniles; maintaining a safe and secure atmosphere for juveniles in a detention center.
</li><li>Takes required actions during emergencies situations and stands watch in each unit.
</li><li>Assists juveniles in interpersonal skill development.
</li><li>Provides support services for routine maintenance, etc.; checks premises and ensures safety of juveniles; attends staff meetings, case conferences and trainings.
</li><li>Maintains the booking program to record youth's daily behaviors and interactions between courts and family visits to document disturbances and other unusual events of behavior.
</li><li>Oversees the juveniles during program functions at the detention centers.
</li><li>Completes incident reports and other documentation as needed according to detention center rules; assists juveniles in complaint procedures.
</li><li>Attends staff meetings, case conferences and trainings as required.
</li><li>Transports juveniles as needed.</li></ul>
Additional Information:
<ul><li>This position is deemed essential and has been designated for mandatory operations by the Appointing Authority; therefore, the incumbent is not eligible for Adverse Weather Leave.
</li><li>May be required to work overtime and any shift as needed and directed.
</li><li>Required to successfully complete the Department of Juvenile Justice Training Academy; which entails two weeks on the job training, four weeks (Monday &ndash; Friday) at the academy training location (Louisville, Kentucky). Overnight lodging and travel is required for the ACT and provided by the department.
</li><li>Applicants are required to successfully pass a physical examination and be able to perform all essential job functions, with or without reasonable accommodation. The cost of the physical examination will be billed through the employee&rsquo;s health insurance; however, any applicable co-pays will be reimbursed by the department. This position has an approved Locality Premium of $5.228, based on the organizational structure and work county it is currently assigned to, in compliance with 101 KAR 2:034 Section 9(1).<br>

This job classification is approved for the following shift premiums, in compliance with 101 KAR 2:034 Section 9(2), which are applied to the base salary:
<ul><li>Shift Premium - $2.13 an hour between 3:00 p.m. and 11:00 p.m.
</li><li>Shift Premium $1.13 an hour between 11:01 p.m. and 6:59 a.m.
</li><li>Weekend Premium - $2.13 per hour
</li><li>Holiday Premium - $2.13 per hour</li></ul>

Must maintain any required licensure(s), certification(s), or other credentials for the length of employment in this job classification. </div><div>Work environment is hazardous due to working in a state correctional facility with convicted felons or in a juvenile detention facility. May be exposed to hazards and dangers associated with operating a motor vehicle while providing transportation services.
