POSITION PURPOSE: 
The Pre-K Teacher Assistant performs a wide range and variety of technical and clerical tasks in assisting the teacher. These duties include tasks that support the efforts of the teacher in meeting the needs of all students. Examples of duties of a Pre-K Teacher Assistant may include but are not limited to, providing assistance to the teacher with quality instruction for all students, providing one on-one assistance in regards to classroom management, leading small group activities, assisting exception children students in the Pre-K classroom, and assisting the teacher with general housekeeping and clerical duties as needed. All duties listed under &ldquo;Essential Duties&rdquo; are at the request of, or under the direction of, the teacher to whom the Pre-K Teacher Assistant is assigned. 
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:<ul><li>
High School Diploma or GED</li><li>
10A NCAC 09 .3013 NC PRE-K TEACHER ASSISTANT EDUCATION AND CREDENTIALS:</li><li>
(a) All teacher assistants shall have a high school diploma or its equivalent and shall either:</li><li><ul><li>
(1) hold a Child Development Associate (CDA) credential; or</li><li>
(2) hold or be working toward an Associate Degree or higher in birth-through-kindergarten, child development, early childhood education, or an early childhood education related field. Teacher assistants working toward the Associate Degree shall make progress by completing a minimum of six semester hours per year.</li></ul></li><li>
(b) All teacher assistants shall complete a minimum of 15 hours of annual in-service professional development. A combination of college coursework, Continuing Education Units (CEUs), or clock hours may be used to complete the requirements of this Rule.</li><li>
(c) The site-level administrator shall document the progress of any teacher assistants who are working toward the required education. This documentation must be maintained in the individual's staff record available for review by the Division.</li></ul>

EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND EXPERIENCE<ul><li>
Associate Degree in Early Childhood or Credentials I and II (CDA - Child Development Associate)</li><li>
6 hours of college or university credit in Early Childhood or two years of supervised experience in a licensed child care facility.</li><li>
Any equivalent combination of training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities</li></ul> 
CERTIFICATION AND LICENSE REQUIREMENTS<ul><li>
Must possess a valid driver&rsquo;s license issued by the NC Department of Motor Vehicles</li></ul>
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:<ul><li>
Two (2) to five (5) years serving as a classroom Pre-K Teacher Assistant in a licensed childcare facility.</li><li>
Training in assisting students with special needs.</li></ul>

Exhibits positive behavior toward children, parents, staff, and administrators.</li><li>

Is involved and works to facilitate accomplishments of the total school program.</li><li>
Assists students with understanding, interpreting, adhering to laws, rules, and regulations.</li><li>
Carries out supervisory duties in a prompt and responsible manner to ensure a safe and healthful environment.</li><li>

REPORTS TO: Principal 
The Teacher Assistant reports directly to the Principal or designee and works under their guidance and supervision. The Pre-K Assistant works cooperatively with the teacher and school administration in providing a classroom environment in which students can take full advantage of the instructional programs and available resource materials.

The Pre-K Assistant, Exceptional Children (PNA) Personal Needs Assistant under general supervision provides support for a designated Pre-K EC student with their personal needs.

The Employee performs support work to carry out the Board of Education policies and procedures under the direction of principal.

Essential Functions
<ul><li>Adhere to all state, federal, and local laws, policies, and procedures</li>
<li>Assist children individually or in small groups to help them master assignments and reinforce learning concepts presented by teachers</li>
<li>Supervise students in classrooms, halls, cafeterias, school yards, gymnasiums, etc.</li>
<li>Enforce administration policies and rules governing students</li>
<li>Discuss assigned duties with the classroom teacher to coordinate instructional efforts</li>
<li>Instruct and monitor students in the use and care of equipment and materials to prevent injuries and damage</li>
<li>Observe student performance and record relevant data to assess progress</li>
<li>Present subject matter to students under the direction and guidance of teachers, using agreed upon methods of delivery (whole groups, small groups, and/or individual support)</li>
<li>Assist with checking materials and portfolios, correcting papers, supervising, and testing as requested by the teacher</li>
<li>Assist in keeping classroom learning centers clean</li>
<li>Assist with student attendance procedures, record keeping, and organizing classroom learning spaces</li>
<li>Prepare lesson materials, bulletin board displays, exhibits, equipment, and demonstrations for their assigned classroom(s)</li>
<li>Participate in the daily bus, car and van transportation duties involving children's' arrival and departure to and from schools</li>
<li>Participate in professional development workshops</li>
<li>Create an inclusive environment with positive communication/public relations</li>
<li>Perform related duties as assigned</li>

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities
<ul>
<li>Knowledge of the principles, standards, and expectations of curriculum in child development or early childhood</li>
<li>Knowledge of and understanding of various learning styles, effective instructional strategies, classroom management, learning assessment and diagnosis, and research related to learning</li>
<li>Ability to learn and use specialized tools, equipment or software related to business needs</li>
<li>Ability to implement local, state, and federal rules, guidelines, and procedures into daily business operations</li>
<li>Ability to communicate effectively</li>
<li>Ability to reason, make judgments, and maintain effective working relationships</li>

Education and Experience
<ul>
<li>Hold a Child Development Associate Credential- CDA credential required</li>
</ul><ul><li>Hold, or be working toward and be able to submit a minimum of six documented semester hours per year until completion, associate's degree in childcare administration, child development, early childhood education, school-age children, childcare administration, ECE-special education, ECE-teacher associate, human growth and development, school age children, or special education</li>
</ul>

<li>Hold, or be working toward and be able to submit a minimum of six documented semester hours per year until completion, bachelor's degree in birth-kindergarten, childcare administration, school-age children, child development, child and family development, child and family studies, child psychology, sociology, early childhood education, ECE-special education, ECE-teacher associate, elementary education, human growth and development, human growth and family studies, or human development and family studies</li>
<li>Work experience in an early childhood setting preferred</li></ul></div>
