Forensic Biology: Analysts assigned to this unit examine evidentiary material collected from crime scenes for the presence of biological substances and/or DNA. The analyst will perform serological testing to examine for the presence of potential biological material, processes samples to isolate DNA, interprets DNA results to make comparisons, and generates associated statistical analyses.</div><div></div><div><b><br>

Uses independent judgement in determining tests performed and items tested on routine cases, while consulting with senior level analysts as needed.</li><li>
Conducts qualitative and quantitative analyses of physical evidence related to criminal investigations using scientific testing procedures, to include microscopic and macroscopic physical examinations and chemical analyses.</li><li>
Analyzes, interprets data and other information prior to preparation of reports.</li><li>
Performs maintenance, calibration, and quality control on scientific instrumentation.</li><li>
Receives evidence and maintains proper chain of custody.</li><li>
Prepares accurate and precise notes, technical reports, and comprehensive documentation of findings.</li><li>
Serves as a qualified expert witness in court, effectively communicating complex scientific findings.</li><li>
Provides technical assistance to submitting agencies and the criminal justice community.</li><li>
Works with potentially hazardous materials following laboratory safety protocols and procedures.</li><li>

Bachelor&rsquo;s Degree in Natural Science, Forensic Science, or a closely related field required. Graduate Degree, preferred.</li><li>
For Forensic Biology Unit assignment: a minimum of twelve (12) semester or equivalent credit hours of combined undergraduate and graduate course work in biochemistry, genetics, molecular biology, statistics and/or population genetics.</li><li>
Must possess a valid SC Driver&rsquo;s License (or obtain within three (3) months of hire) and meet the requirements of the County&rsquo;s motor vehicle policy.</li></ul><div></div><div><b><br>
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:</b></div><br>

Able to distinguish the full range of the color spectrum to perform forensic examinations.</li><li>
Able to function productively in a standard office environment accessing cabinets, shelving, work areas and office equipment.</li><li>

WORKING CONDITIONS:</b></div><br>

Typical assignments are carried out in a laboratory environment with some exposure to noxious fumes with appropriate personal protective equipment.</li><li>
Work involves some risk of sustaining illness and injury from the use of chemicals, high-pressure laboratory systems, biological materials and organisms, also high energy light sources and voltage.</li><li>
Consent for collection of a DNA sample at the time of hire is a mandatory condition of employment.</li><li>
Position requires moderate travel within and outside of the County which imposes common travel hazards.</li><li>
To successfully fulfill the essential functions of this position, employee must maintain standard work hours within the Biological Science Center. Standard work hours would be Monday &ndash; Friday between the hours of 8:00 AM &ndash; 5:00 PM and position may include meetings, presentations and events during weekends and evenings. Irregular hours may be necessary when deemed essential to maintain operations in response to matters of public safety.</li><li>
This position may offer some opportunity for remote work.</li><li>
