Job Summary</b></p>
Summary<br>
Responsible for specimen handling and facilitating the workflow in and out of the laboratory, performing various clerical and preprocessing duties, and interacting with others using a variety of communication tools. Performs pre-analytical phase of specimen preparation and must handle biohazardous and infectious material while following proper safety precautions. Works cooperatively with all hospital and laboratory staff, and external clients through verbal and written communications in order to resolve problems, exchange information, receive instructions, establish protocols, and process information concerning patient specimens Responsible for the accurate pre-analytical processing of laboratory specimens and ensuring delivery of those specimens to the appropriate laboratory section. Includes the handling of biohazardous and infectious material while following proper safety precautions. Also responsible for assisting client services and technical associates in resolving specimen quality and integrity concerns.<br>

1. Verifies that correct specimen and labeling requirements are met for test orders.<br>
2. Correctly and accurately registers and labels tubes as appropriate.<br>
3. Centrifuges and aliquots specimens according to department policy.<br>
4. Sorts, stores, and delivers laboratory specimens by department and specimen requirements, as appropriate.<br>
5. Works with medical technologists and client services to resolve specimen problems.<br>
6. Answers telephones and provides assistance as needed.<br>

 The Andzelm lab is focused on how both common and rare human genetic variation influences neuroinflammatory pathophysiology in collaborative work across Boston Children&rsquo;s Hospital and at the Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard. We are recruiting a Research Assistant II to join ongoing exciting projects using iPSC-derived neural cells, next generation sequencing, and traditional wet lab work to examine genetic risk factors and mechanisms of neuroinflammation.

 The selected research assistant will make key intellectual and technical contributions to this project and will receive excellent training in being an independent, critical thinking scientist. Such training will be instrumental in preparing the candidate for their next career stage (such as medical school, graduate school, academic research positions, biotech research, and others).

What you'll likely work on:</b></p>

<li>Use impeccable C-I-CARE (a framework containing the key elements of a great interaction and effective communication that we use with patients and each other) in all patient interactions, both clinical and administrative, and ensure a fluid and positive in-office experience through patient intake, same day schedule management, appropriate follow up scheduling, strong knowledge of billing and insurance, monitoring patient feedback and assisting with outreach as necessary</li>
<li>Provide best in class venipuncture services on a population ranging from pediatrics to geriatrics, depending on the office location</li>
<li>Perform and assist with extended scope duties such as, but not limited to non-blood specimen collection, EKGs/ECGs, vitals, ear lavages, vaccines, PPD tests, and swabs</li>
<li>Maintain high standards of in-office care through proper specimen labeling, handling and processing, inventory upkeep, and tool sterilization</li>
<li>Continue to care for our members beyond the lab room by answering patient messages, following up on lab cases and assisting our providers and virtual medical team with clerical duties such as, but not limited to biometric screening forms, medical record and consult review, billing inquiries, and DOH reporting</li>
<li>All front of house duties including check in/check out, insurance verification, printing/paperwork tasks, prepping tests, tasking to service level expectations etc</li>
<li>Contribute to team development through rounding, attending team huddles, participating in team problem solving, supporting in office providers with ad hoc asks, etc.</li>

 The Department of Immunology and Infectious Diseases (IID) focuses on the biological, immunological, epidemiological and ecological aspects of viral, bacterial and protozoan diseases of animals and humans, including the vectors that transmit infectious agents. Research in the department's laboratories is primarily focused on diseases of developing countries.

 Insects are a key gateway for spreading disease because of their ability to ferry pathogens from one host to another. These vectors represent important biological touch points, especially in malaria, and we are pursuing innovative research programs to illuminate their roles and identify strategies for future disease control. In Africa &mdash; where the majority of malaria deaths occur &mdash; the primary vector of disease is the mosquito, Anopheles gambiae. The malaria parasite is transmitted through the bites of female mosquitoes, whose high reproductive capacity fuels malaria transmission. Therefore, targeting these insects (and the parasites they carry) holds great promise as a strategy for future disease control.

 The successful candidate will support the research of the Department and of the Catterccia Laboratory, focusing on parasite-vector interactions. The Research Assistant will study mosquito reproduction and its interaction with malaria parasite transmission, as well as help in the development and testing of new chemical interventions for parasite control in mosquitoes with the ultimate goal of developing innovative malaria control strategies.
