<div><div><p>The work of the law student interns includes assisting in all aspects of trial preparation, legal research, writing memoranda of law, drafting pleadings and appellate briefs, assisting in preparation and taking of depositions, assisting in pretrial conferences and trials of civil and criminal cases. Law student interns are required to work 16 hours per week for 12 weeks.</p></div>

<div><div><p>Students must be first year, second-year, or third-year law students. <b>Applicants must be U.S. citizens.</b> <b>Residency Requirement: </b>For a total of three years (not necessarily consecutive years) of the past five years immediately prior to applying for a position, the applicant must have: 1) resided in the United States; 2) worked for the U.S. overseas in a federal or military capacity; <b>or</b> 3) been a dependent of a federal or military employee serving overseas. The Town of Garner, one of the State's fastest-growing towns, is located in southeastern Wake County. Garner is close to Raleigh but still retains its small-town charm. The Town's Legal Department is committed to providing the Town of Garner and its public officials and employees with legal services of the highest quality so that the Town's business is conducted efficiently, effectively, and economically. The Town of Garner will offer a Summer internship program for a law student who has completed their first year (or the equivalent for part-time students) at an American Bar Association-accredited law school. Who We Are:</b> The Animal Legal Defense Fund&rsquo;s mission is to protect the lives and advance the interests of animals through the legal system. The Animal Legal Defense Fund accomplishes this mission by filing high-impact lawsuits to protect animals from harm, providing free legal assistance and training to prosecutors to assure that animal abusers are held accountable for their crimes, supporting tough animal protection legislation and fighting legislation harmful to animals, gathering data about and advocating for effective regulation of animal exploitative industries and providing resources and opportunities to law students and professionals to advance the emerging field of animal law.

Role Description:</b> The Animal Legal Defense Fund summer clerkship program gives law students who demonstrate an interest in animal law the opportunity to work with and be trained by top experts in the field. Clerks are integral members of a program team and work on projects that further the current work of the program and advance the mission and goals of the Animal Legal Defense Fund. Clerks also participate in activities that will allow them to network across the organization with Animal Legal Defense Fund staff and other clerks, and engage them in the mission and goals of the organization.</p><p><b>
How You Will Make a Difference:</b></p><p>
This position is housed within the Animal Legal Defense Fund&rsquo;s <b>Animal Legal Education &amp; Scholarship Program</b>, which works with law schools, students, and faculty to advance the emerging field of animal law.</p><p>
Clerks will complete research for an upcoming Aquatic Animal Law &amp; Policy Textbook. Students will assist the Senior Student Programs Attorney with:</p><ul><li>
Completing legal, factual, regulatory, and policy research relating to a wide variety of aquatic animal law issues, with a focus on animals used in entertainment and as companions;</li><li>
General editing and checking sources and citations; and</li><li>
Preparing written work products.</li></ul><p>
Clerks will also assist with student chapter outreach, animal law curriculum development, and project and event planning. Students will help the Senior Law School Programs Attorney with:</p><ul><li>
Researching self-study content for ALDF Student Chapters, including caselaw, recent legislation, law articles, and scholarship on animal law topics;</li><li>
Compiling materials, documents, and other content for animal law course packets;</li><li>
Assisting with fall project and event planning for Speak Out for Farmed Animals Month and the ALDF Student Convention; and</li><li>

This position allows the LOPD to extend an offer to applicants prior to graduation from law school, which provides a law student the guarantee of employment after graduation and the LOPD the guarantee of an employee dedicated to indigent defense. The purpose of the limited practitioner position is to bridge the time from when a student graduates law school and is sworn in as a practicing attorney. Since the LOPD is a government agency, it is unable to hire an individual as an attorney unless they are sworn and licensed by a state bar. Individuals extended an offer are expected to join the LOPD team soon after taking the bar exam for extensive training on criminal defense, local rules and practices, and the LOPD's approach to providing<br>
holistic representation. Once the limited practitioner is sworn in and performing at the expected level of practice, the limited practitioners will be moved into a public defender attorney position based on demonstrated performance and availability of positions.<br>

Students will work closely with Assistant U.S. Attorneys in developing legal documents and will receive direction in honing research skills. Responsibilities will increase and assignments will become more complex as your training and experience progress. <div><div><div><div><div><p>First-year (second semester) and second-year law students. Status as a student in good standing at an accredited law school. Must speak, read, and write English fluently. Must maintain a minimum 3.0 grade point average. Must be a U.S. citizen. There is a required background check because of the sensitive nature of the work performed. Applicants must complete paperwork providing information about residences, schooling, work, credit history, and fingerprints. Interviews will be conducted before selection. The volunteer summer law program has a duration of 8 to 10 weeks.</p></div></div></div><div><br>
