</h2>This is a part-time position. The Patient Transport Aide provides support services to hospital departments for patient transport; picks up and delivers medical records, supplies, medications, blood and blood products throughout the hospital; escorts patients to hospital departments when requested; provides assistance with patient arrival and departures when required.

Responsibilities:

A day in the life of a Patient Transport Aide at Hackensack Meridian Health includes:</div><ul><li>
Transports patients by the use of wheelchairs and with stretcher/bed transports, ensuring safe handling of patients to prevent falls.</li><li>
Transports patients to and from appropriate units or Imaging Modalities within expected time frames, and also ensuring the patient's chart is brought along.</li><li>
Maintains regular and open communication with Dispatch/Modality/Unit to notify of receipt of task, changes or delays in transport, and completion of tasks. Open communication is important to avoid non-productive time.</li><li>
Ensure that patient support apparatus such as IV pumps and oxygen tanks are handled safely during transport. Responsible for removing equipment from service that is unsafe or unclean. Responsible for oxygen tank exchange.</li><li>
Where applicable, obtains supplies from central supply as requested.</li><li>
Transporter follows established isolation protocol in use of personal protective equipment and hand washing techniques.</li><li>
Transporter uses two patient identifiers to correctly identify patient.</li><li>
Proper protocol followed for patient expirations.</li><li>
Where applicable, transports specimens to the laboratory, and delivers blood and blood products in a timely manner. Proper protocol followed for specimens/blood work.
</li><li>Where applicable, picks up slides for physicians to review from laboratory as requested.
</li><li>Participates/uses the automated systems in a timely and accurate manner to assist with patient throughput.</li><li>
Lifts a minimum of 10 lbs., pushes and pulls a minimum of 50 lbs. and stands a minimum of length of shift.
</li><li>Identifies the needs of the patient population served and modifies and delivers care that is specific to those needs (i.e., age, culture, language, hearing and/or visually impaired, etc.). This process includes communicating with the patient, parent, and/or primary caregiver(s) at their level (developmental/age, educational, literacy, etc.).
</li><li>Assists with environmental duties in departments or units including pick up and disposal of recycling/trash receptacles; also linen removal from laundry bins to proper disposal area such as chutes for collection as requested. Adhere to cleaning requirements and procedures as assigned

Performs a variety of duties involving the transportation of patients throughout the hospital. Assists nursing staff in the physical, lateral transfer of patients before and after patient transport. Collects and delivers items to and from areas including the Labs, Pharmacy, Radiology, Medical Records, S.P.D., Mail Room and patient care areas. Cleans, sanitizes and delivers beds and transport equipment; maintains job activity logs as required.
I. Major Responsibilities: 
1. Escorts ambulatory patients. Transports patient by wheelchair, stretcher or bed. Prior to transport, verifies identification of all patients assigned by checking 2 identifiers and signing off on Safe Patient Transport Forms; notifies clinician if discrepancy on forms. To ensure patient comfort and safety during transport process, monitors and responds to basic patient needs before, during and after transport. Provides appropriate handoff communication when patient is delivered to receiving unit. 
2. Assists nursing staff and/or lift tech in moving and positioning of patients using various lift devices in preparation of patient for transport and returning patient to bed. Includes lateral transfer of patients on precaution status that requires Patient Transporter to use personal protection equipment and to follow infection control process per precaution isolation-type. 
3. Delivers stretchers, beds, cribs and wheelchairs as needed. Assists in deep-cleaning of all transport equipment on a biannual basis. Sanitizes transport vehicles and ancillary equipment between patient use. 
4. Transports patient specimens to and from the Lab, Pathology, and blood products to/from the Blood Bank in accordance with established infection control guidelines. Transports contaminated equipment to Sterile Processing within same infection control guidelines. 
5. Delivers other materials such as medical records, pharmaceuticals, X-ray films, sterile items, and miscellaneous reports and items as required. 
II. Position Qualifications:

1. High school diploma or equivalent.
Experience/Skills:

1. Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification within 6 months of hire. 
2. Ability to read, write, speak and understand English. 
3. Good inter-personal skills and a customer service orientation to maintain a collaborative, patient focused effort between Patient Transportation and other hospital departments.
Preferred: 
1. Six months&rsquo; experience in a hospital environment.

In this role, the successful candidate Responsible for the safe, sanitary and efficient movement of patients and specific equipment to and from clinical, ancillary, diagnostic or support service areas, in accordance with established procedures. Monitors and interacts with patients during the transport to ensure safety, well-being, comfort and confidentiality. Job Responsibilities:

<li>Completes patient move as assigned- to the correct destination</li>
<li>Communicates effectively with Nursing and Test Area Techs, upon arrival and before departing with patient</li>
<li>Follow proper standard precaution procedures; hand washing and disinfect equipment before and after each transport. Personal Protective Equipment (gloves, mask, gown, goggles, etc.) should be worn with isolation patients.</li>
<li>Communicate effectively the status of the patient transport e.g. delay starts and ends, cancellation, patient in transit, and completion using the proper radio codes.</li>
<li>Responds in a timely manner when contacted by dispatcher via 2-way radio.</li>

<li>Routinely demonstrates safe handling of patients. Operate all equipment (stretcher, wheelchair, bed &amp; mod-chair) properly and safely. Check the equipment before use to ensure proper function. Always remain focus on the patient throughout the transport.</li>
<li>Maintain patient confidentiality by placing the patient's chart in a proper place and do not discuss patient information in any public areas.</li>
<li>Interacts with the patient throughout the patient move, while keeping the patient informed.</li>
<li>Checks all identifiers before moving patients. Insuring that the following information matches: text on 2-way radio, Patient ID Band (name &amp; medical records number) and Patient's Chart.</li>
<li>When arriving at room or holding area, greets patient, introduce yourself and explain to patient what's about to occur.</li>
<li>Arrive on time at start of shift, in uniform and with ID Badge visible on shirt pocket. Adheres to Patient Escort's uniform Code throughout shift.</li>
