The Certified Medication Technician (Med Tech) is responsible for the safe, accurate administration of medications to residents in accordance with physician orders, state regulations, and facility policies. Essential Duties and Responsibilities</h3>

<li>Administer prescribed medications according to the Medication Administration Record (MAR)
</li>
<li>Verify resident identity and medication accuracy (right resident, medication, dose, time, route)
</li>
<li>Observe residents for side effects, adverse reactions, or changes in condition
</li>
<li>Report concerns, refusals, or errors promptly to nursing staff or supervisors
</li>
<li>Document all medication administration accurately and timely
</li>
<li>Assist with medication setup and inventory per facility policy
</li>
<li>Maintain medication carts and storage areas in a clean, secure manner
</li>
<li>Follow all state regulations, infection control practices, and safety guidelines
</li>
<li>Provide respectful, compassionate interaction with residents
</li>
<li>Assist with basic resident needs as allowed during medication passes

Position Summary 
A Medication Technician in an assisted living facility is responsible for safely administering medications to residents under the supervision of a licensed nurse, while also supporting daily care and maintaining compliance with state regulations.
Key Responsibilities
Medication Administration 
Administer prescribed medications to residents following the &quot;5 rights&quot; (right resident, medication, dose, time, route) and document all medications given in MARs (Medication Administration Records). Observe residents for side effects or adverse reactions and report concerns. Handle and store medications according to policy and state guidelines.
Resident Care 
Assist residents with activities of daily living (ADLs) such as bathing, dressing, grooming, and mobility. Provide reminders and support for self-administration when applicable. Monitor resident condition and report changes to nursing staff.
Compliance &amp; Safety 
Follow North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services regulations for assisted living facilities. Maintain infection control and safety standards. Ensure proper documentation and confidentiality (HIPAA compliance).
Communication 
Communicate with nurses, caregivers, and management regarding resident care. Interact respectfully with residents and families.
Qualifications
Required: 
High school diploma or GED. Completion of a state-approved Medication Aide/Technician training program. Successful competency evaluation (per NC regulations). CPR/First Aid certification (often required).
Preferred: 
Prior experience in assisted living, long-term care, or healthcare. CNA (Certified Nursing Assistant) certification (sometimes required by employer).
Skills &amp; Competencies

 The Certified Medication Technician assists in performing routine duties to include medication administration, inventory control and storage of pharmaceutical items. Certified Medication Technicians work under the direct supervision of the Director of Nursing and/or, depending on scope of practice, receives clinical guidance from a Registered Nurse or Licensed Practical Nurse..
 
 
 
 Duties/Responsibilities

Recognizes and adheres to the six (6) rights of medication administration.

 Adheres to all facility policies and procedures and Pharmacy Board rules and regulation regarding the administration and documentation of narcotic medications.
 </li>
 <li>
 Documents administration of medication on the Medication Administration Record (MAR).
 </li>
 <li>
 Documents medications not administered on the MAR and the reason for not being administered.
 </li>
 <li>
 Adheres to proper infection control techniques during the medication administration process, including the incorporation of universal precautions when indicated.
 </li>
 <li>
 Participates in data collection, medication audits, and other performance improvement activities related to medication administration.
 </li>
 <li>
 Following policy and utilizing appropriate documents, flow sheets and forms, documents all health-related encounters for patients.
 </li>
 <li>
 Reports any adverse patient medication reactions immediately to a supervisor.
 </li>
 <li>
 Ensures the medication cart remains clean and orderly.
 </li>
 <li>
 Reorders and replaces medications and medication administration supplies, as needed, in order to perform routine job responsibilities. Checks expiration dates on medications and supplies.
 </li>
 <li>
 Ensures the confidentiality and rights of patients, the confidentiality of the health systems and department documents, and adhering to HIPAA Regulations.
 </li>
 <li>
 Assists other healthcare staff as needed in the medical unit within the scope of practice.
 </li>
 <li>
 Identifies basic signs and symptoms of deviations from normal health status. Provides this information to the nurse and/or physician.
 </li>
 <li>
 Works in conjunction with nurses to maintain daily duties required to run the medical unit in an organized fashion.
 </li>
 <li>
 Provides appropriate first aid and CPR. Reports findings to the nurse and/or physician.
 </li>
 <li>
 Provides patient teaching as instructed.

 <li>
 Performs clerical duties such as answering the phone, filing documents in patient record.
