POSITION AVAILABLE: Social Worker, Mental Health Team (San Marcos, TX)
Neighborhood Defender Service&rsquo;s Hays County Criminal Defense Team is a nonprofit, client-centered, collaborative, holistic public defense office created to provide criminal defense representation and related services to residents of Hays County, Texas. The office opened in January 2023.<div></div> 
Clients are represented by teams composed of lawyers, investigators, social workers, client advocates, and team administrators. NDS adheres to a client-centered approach to
representation that emphasizes a heightened responsiveness to clients&rsquo; needs prior to arrest, while a case is pending, and after the case concludes. 
The Social Worker is an integral part of the defense team who demonstrates a commitment to serving marginalized persons and communities. Responsibilities:

RESPONSIBILITIES: Reporting to the Managing Director of NDS Texas or one of the Supervising Attorneys of NDS Hays County, the Social Worker will carry a caseload of their own cases and clients as well as coordinate resources on behalf of attorneys for their clients. The individual in this role will:</div><div></div><div> 
1. Embrace NDS&rsquo; philosophy of client&#8208;centered, community&#8208;based, holistic representation and commitment to excellence by providing vigorous representation with energy and enthusiasm to clients.</div><div>
2. Work closely with team members to advocate for reduced sentences and/or alternatives to incarceration for clients. This advocacy includes:</div><ul><li>
Gathering factual mitigation through interviews and obtaining records;
</li><li>Analyzing records;</li><li>
Researching and recommending alternatives to incarceration;
</li><li>Writing pre-pleading memoranda to judges and prosecutors seeking reduced sentences and alternatives to incarceration.</li></ul><div>
3. Work closely with clients to:</div><ul><li>
Make appropriate referrals to address clients&rsquo; social service needs (drug treatment, mental health treatment, housing, and other benefits);</li><li>
Assist clients in navigating available social service agencies;</li><li>
Advocate on behalf of clients to social service agencies.</li><li>
Advocate orally on behalf of clients to judges, programs, and prosecutors</li></ul><div>
4. Visit clients in custody to conduct initial assessments, screenings, and interviews.
</div><div>5. Work with confinement facilities to ensure clients are being treated for physical and behavioral health issues, including receiving the proper medications, if appropriate.
</div><div>6. Work as part of the interdisciplinary team, including attorneys and other non-attorney advocates, to determine case strategy</div><div>
7. Provide clinical or non-clinical social services to individuals, families, groups, organizations, and communities.</div><div>
8. Apply social work theory, knowledge, methods, and ethics to restore or enhance social, psychosocial, or bio-psychosocial functioning.</div><div>
9. Maintain accurate and confidential client records, documenting all interactions, and interventions.
</div><div>10. Interview family, friends, and others to obtain a complete picture of the client&rsquo;s situation.
</div><div>11. Obtain clients&rsquo; records from all relevant sources; review records; and prepare summary of records</div><div>
12. Develop mitigation evidence for attorneys to use in pre-trial negotiations, trials, and sentencing purposes.
</div><div>13. Adhere to all relevant federal and state laws and agency policies and procedures, including HIPAA and other confidentiality regulations.</div><div>
14. Demonstrate cultural competence, awareness, and respect for diverse cultures and individual differences.
</div><div>15. Provide basic needs counseling and problem-solving assistance or case management services for clients and their families.

The ACT Peer Support Specialist provides direct treatment, rehabilitative and supportive services in a community setting to consumers. Works as a team member of a clinical team to assess consumer needs and wants, participates in the development of individual service plans, acts as a consumer advocate and liaisons with families and community agencies. Provides on-call crisis intervention services, as well as weekend and holiday coverage. Serves as the team&rsquo;s lead consumer advocate and mentor. Is a self-disclosed mental health consumer and is willing to provide a consumer&rsquo;s perspective of the team&rsquo;s service provision.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:<ul><li>
High School Diploma, or GED 1-4 years of behavioral health experience</li><li>
Must be 21 years or older</li><li>
Previous experience working as a Peer Support Specialist is highly preferred.</li><li>
Peer Certification required upon hire or within 30 days of starting.</li><li>
AZ approved Peer Employment training program and have recent certification as of 2013.</li><li>
Must have basic knowledge and understanding of mental illness.</li><li>
Ability to obtain and maintain a Level One Fingerprint Clearance Card and any other required background checks.</li><li>
Ability to meet Copa&rsquo;s driver authorized driving requirements, including AZ Driver&rsquo;s license upon hire, 39-month MVR.</li></ul>
JOB SUMMARY (Including, but not limited to):<ul><li>
Meets with the consumers in the community in accordance with established policies and procedures and clinical protocols to provide supportive counseling skill development and other support services as needed.</li><li>
Works with consumer&rsquo;s Prescribing Clinician, Nurse, and other members of the clinical team to ensure the timely development and implementation of the individual&rsquo;s service plan (including all necessary assessments) and their crisis plan.</li><li>
Coordinates with all parties involved in consumer&rsquo;s treatment according to policy and procedure and clinical protocols, including but not limited to, attending inter and intra-agency staffing, communication by telephone and letter, service/support delivery etc., as indicated on the consumer&rsquo;s service plan.</li><li>
Assists consumers and families in accessing additional needed services and obtaining entitlements, including identification of funding services.</li><li>
Responsible for transporting consumers to necessary services, as outlined in their service plan, as needed.</li><li>
Assumes &ldquo;primary contact&rdquo; responsibility for a percentage of team consumers to: assure maintenance of accurate, thorough, and current documentation in the medical record (in accordance with policies, procedures, and clinical protocols) for those specific individuals; keep weekly client schedule for those individuals updates, and act as first contact for those consumers and their families.</li><li>

Job Summary:
As a Mental Health Professional, you will assist patients in meeting their basic needs under nursing supervision. You are responsible for physical observations, direct patient care and collaborating while implementing care plans.
You will need to recognize and respect the patient's beliefs, culture, socio-economic status. You will provide patients support through therapeutic interpersonal skills, education and psychoeducational groups.
