The Department of Biochemistry &amp; Molecular Biology (BMB) at McGovern Medical School, a part of The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston (UTHealth Houston), is seeking an accomplished investigator and leader to serve as its next Chair. This is an exceptional opportunity for a world-class scientist to lead a basic science department at the Texas Medical Center. Investigators with an outstanding track record of funded research in membrane biology, structural biology, gene regulation, molecular signaling, or systems of biology are encouraged to apply. Since the department&rsquo;s infancy, BMB has cultivated a strong reputation in an exceptional environment for advancing molecular and translational research. The Chair will benefit from an outstanding research infrastructure, access to collaborative opportunities across the Texas Medical Center, and a strong institutional commitment to academic excellence, mentorship, and career development. Comprising over 100 FTE&rsquo;s, the department currently has 31 faculty members (10 full, 7 associate, 12 assistant professors, and 2 instructors) with 21 independent principal investigators. BMB has a robust track record of securing significant grants from NIH, Welch, and the American Heart Association. This success is reflected in the substantial $10.7 million in grant funds awarded to the faculty during fiscal year 2025. In addition, BMB faculty actively contribute to the institution&rsquo;s educational mission through several capacities, including teaching medical students and graduate students and mentoring postdoctoral research fellows.
The BMB Department houses multiple Centers of Excellence, such as those focused on Structural Biology Imaging, Membrane Biology, and Pulmonary Research. The BMB faculty are also members of the UT MD Anderson UTHealth Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences in Houston. UTHealth Houston is a major institution within the Texas Medical Center. This world-renowned biomedical complex includes UT MD Anderson Cancer Center, Baylor College of Medicine, Texas A&amp;M College of Medicine, Rice University, and more than 40 other institutions. Potential candidates for the Chair of Biochemistry &amp; Molecular Biology position should hold a Ph.D. in cell biology, structural biology, genetics, immunology or a related field. Excellent faculty mentoring experience, prior academic leadership experience and credentials to allow appointment as a senior-level faculty member are required. Prior experience teaching graduate-level programs and/or medical students is desired. Advancing our understanding of genomics and for providing accurate interpretation of genomics data for effective diagnoses and treatment of our patients. Works with a multidisciplinary team of healthcare professionals, including laboratory technologist, variant analysts, software engineers, data analysts, genetic counselors, scientific directors, and physicians to provide clinical expertise in interpretation of genomics laboratory test results with primary responsibility for signing out interpretative reports.
Additional Information:
Hours: 40 hours a week, 1.0 FTE/salaried, expected to work a Monday to Friday schedule during core hospital hours; However, scheduling may change with evolving department needs and/or discussion with the hiring manager.

Provides clinical expertise in interpretation of molecular genetics laboratory test results in accordance with ACMG standards and laboratory policies with primary responsibility for signing out interpretative reports from various testing methodologies including gene sequencing, whole exome sequencing, etc.</li><li>
Responsible for reporting of accurate clinical test results within established laboratory turn-around times.</li><li>
Works directly with variant analysis team to support robust and timely results review of laboratory results including supporting efficient variant prioritization, classification, and interpretation processes.</li><li>
Maintain documents and records: Ensure the documentation of patient information, test result is accurate and includes interpretation of genomic finding in the context of clinical presentation and recommendations per policy. Regarding patient confidentiality and data management, adhere to regulatory and ethical guidelines.</li><li>
Give regular feedback regarding workflows to support continuous improvement.</li><li>
Provide clinical consultation: Determine the likelihood of genetic conditions by analyzing the medical histories, family histories, and genetic information of patients.</li><li>

Contribute to continuing education for technical staff.</li><li>
Participate in scholarly activity through case reports/series, laboratory focused projects, collaboration with clinical colleagues, etc. May presents scientific and educational posters/presentations to technical staff and colleagues, and at relevant professional meetings.</li><li>
Recognizes clinical testing technical needs, raises concerns to lab leadership when they emerge, and engages in problem-solving as needed. At the laboratory's technical level, makes recommendations to boost testing efficiency while controlling expenses for reagents, supplies, and technician time.</li></ul> 
Minimum Qualifications
EDUCATION &ndash; Doctoral degree (Ph.D. or M.D./Ph.D.) in Molecular Genetics, Human Genetics, or a related field from an accredited institution.
EXPERIENCE &ndash; Two (2) years&rsquo; experience in molecular genetics variant analysis or case review and sign out in a clinical laboratory setting. Broad knowledge of genetic variant databases and their utility is essential with a basic knowledge of NGS wet-bench techniques, data quality, and bioinformatics tools.
EQUIVALENCY &ndash; Combination of education and/or clinical relevant experience: bachelor degree and ten (10) years or masters degree and six (6) years.
CERTIFICATION(S) &ndash; Qualifications: individuals need to have one of the following current certifications to be eligible for the position:<ul><li>
Certified as a high complexity laboratory director in molecular by the American Board of Bioanalysis (ABB) - certification after name will read as HCLD(ABB)</li><li>
Certified in Molecular Diagnostics by the American Board of Clinical Chemistry (ABCC) - certification after name will read as DABCC(MD)</li><li>
Certified by the American Board of Clinical Genetics and Genomics (ABMG or ABMGG) - certification after name will read as FACMG</li><li>
 HCLD(ABB) and DABCC(MD) are equivalent to FACMG, so please do not screen out these candidates</li></ul> 
Salary Information 
Pay is dependent on applicant's relevant experience. 
 
Annual Salary Range (Based on 40 hours worked per week): $121,394.93 to $182,092.39
