 The Iowa Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), Division of State-Operated Specialty Care, Bureau of Independence Mental Health Institute (IMHI) is seeking a Psychiatrist to join our team! This is a full-time position with opportunity for growth and development.
 
 
 
 Primary Responsibilities Of This Psychiatrist Position Include
 
 
 
 <ul>
 <li>
 Direct patient care on one of the three inpatient psychiatric units with an average caseload of 10-15 patients. The Psychiatrist can practice both psychotherapy and medication management without restrictions.
 </li>
 <li>
 Actively participate as a member of the interdisciplinary treatment team in collaboration with medical, nursing, psychological, social work, and other health specialties. The Psychiatrist is the clinical leader of this interdisciplinary team of highly skilled professionals.
 </li>
 <li>
 Provide advanced clinical practice to individuals, groups, and families; conduct ongoing assessment including health and developmental history, psychosocial history, physical examination, and diagnostic tests.
 </li>
 <li>
 Review, evaluate, and document patient response to care; assess patient medical/nursing/educational needs and provide both formal and informal teaching; effectively involve patient, family, and significant others in plan of care.
 </li>
 <li>
 Work collaboratively with administrative, medical, and other clinical departments to expand and implement evidence-based modalities of care including Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) skills and trauma-responsive care.
 </li>
 <li>
 Provide preceptor work with medical students, psychiatry residents, and psychiatry fellows who train at IMHI through the State&rsquo;s public-sector psychiatry residency/fellowship program delivered with the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics. This includes collaboration with UIHC and HHS Central Office to expand and refine education and training opportunities to develop the pipeline of public-sector psychiatrists in Iowa.
 </li>

 Adjunct faculty appointment with UIHC may be available if interested. Adjunct faculty appointment would include access to numerous virtual learning opportunities including grand rounds, faculty development, free CME, and online access to numerous clinical databases and electronic books.
 </li>
 <li>
 Fulfill a 40-hour per week position with on-call responsibilities. On-call responsibilities are required and receive additional compensation.

 IMHI provides inpatient treatment and acute psychiatric services, includingindividualized treatment plans and support for children and adolescent patients to continue their education. Job Description 
This position is eligible for an additional sign-on bonus.
Provide psychiatric evaluation, diagnosis, treatment, medication management, crisis intervention, and continuity of behavioral health care for patients in a secure residential setting, in accordance with community standards of care, credentialing requirements, facility policies, and applicable accreditation and regulatory requirements. The Psychiatrist supports on-site and telehealth psychiatry services, contributes to the management of serious mental illness, suicide precautions, and transfer planning, and collaborates with the interdisciplinary team to ensure timely, culturally competent, trauma-informed, and appropriately documented patient care.
Key Responsibilities:<ul><li>
Evaluate, diagnose, and treat psychiatric and behavioral health conditions across the life span within scope of practice and granted privileges.</li><li>
Provide psychiatric services on-site and/or through telehealth, including required twenty-four-hour, seven day per week on-call psychiatry coverage as applicable to the facility care level.</li><li>
Assess and manage patients with serious mental illness, moderate behavioral health conditions, suicide risk, and other urgent or emergent psychiatric needs.</li><li>
Add, remove, or reduce suicide watch precautions for patients, consistent with clinical authority, facility procedures, and contract requirements.</li><li>
Prescribe, adjust, and monitor psychiatric medications, including monitoring for side effects, adverse reactions, and clinically indicated follow-up.</li><li>
Provide patient education regarding diagnosis, treatment goals, expected benefits, risks, medication use, and self-monitoring.</li><li>
Use evidence-based standards of care and approved screening and assessment tools in psychiatric evaluation, treatment planning, and medication management.</li><li>
Review available medical records and document clinically relevant findings in the electronic health record.</li><li>
Complete mental health assessments and follow-up evaluations for patients referred after positive intake screening or comprehensive health assessment findings.</li><li>
Collaborate with behavioral health providers, nursing, medical staff, and primary care providers to coordinate integrated care.</li><li>
Participate in individual and group behavioral health treatment programming, including support for evidence-based and trauma-informed approaches used in the facility.</li><li>
Provide consultation to clinical staff regarding psychiatric diagnosis, treatment planning, psychotropic medications, suicide risk, and management of serious mental illness.</li><li>
Respond to psychiatric emergencies and support emergency medical response, stabilization, and transfer when clinically indicated.</li><li>
Refer patients for community specialty care, hospital-level care, or other higher levels of treatment when medically necessary.</li><li>
Prepare, review, and document treatment plans, clinical notes, orders, transfer summaries, and other required medical record entries accurately and timely.</li><li>
Ensure continuity of care during transfer or discharge by documenting current diagnoses, medications, appointments, consultations, and required follow-up information.</li><li>
Maintain confidentiality of patient information and medical records in accordance with the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA), the Privacy Act, and applicable privacy and records requirements.</li><li>
Use interpreter services and other communication supports when needed to ensure effective communication with patients.</li><li>
Work effectively in a multicultural and multilingual environment and provide culturally competent, trauma-informed care.</li><li>
Participate in quality assurance, performance improvement, risk management, utilization review, audits, inspections, and corrective actions as assigned.</li><li>
Maintain proficiency in electronic health records, telehealth platforms, and other required electronic systems.</li><li>
Complete all required orientation, annual training, emergency response training, drills, competencies, and discipline-specific testing.</li><li>
Comply with credentialing, licensure, fitness, security, safety, infection prevention, and professional conduct requirements applicable to the role.</li><li>
Perform other contract-related duties within scope of practice, licensure, and clinical competency.</li><li>
Complete required organizational compliance education, including assigned requirements that are client-specified, for Joint Commission Healthcare Staffing Services certification or other regulatory bodies.</li></ul>

Qualifications 
Basic Requirements/Certifications:<ul><li>
Current, full, active, and unrestricted license as a Psychiatrist in Maryland or the ability to obtain one.</li><li>
Minimum of 3 years of post-licensure clinical experience in psychiatry.</li><li>
Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.</li><li>
Experience in a detention/correctional or residential healthcare setting is preferred.</li></ul>
Education Required:<ul><li>
Doctor of Medicine or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine from a school in the United States OR</li><li>
Doctor of Medicine or equivalent degree from a foreign medical school that provided education and medical knowledge substantially equivalent to accredited schools in the United States as established by:</li><li>
The National Committee on Foreign Medical Education and Accreditation (NCFMEA) AND</li><li>
 Permanent certification by the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG).</li><li>
Completion of four years of medical specialty training leading to board eligibility in psychiatry by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology, Inc. (ABPN).</li></ul>
Physical Requirements:<ul><li>
Required to walk unaided at a normal pace for up to 5 minutes and maintain balance.</li><li>
Required to jog/fast walk up to &frac14; mile.</li><li>
Requires physical exertion such as lifting objects greater than 30 pounds.</li><li>
Required to perform CPR/emergency care standing or kneeling.</li><li>
Must have the ability to assist sick, injured, or aging patients or staff exiting the building (may require lifting, dragging, wheeling, or carrying someone who weighs significantly more than self).</li><li>
Must be able to see, hear and smell with aids if necessary.</li><li>
Must be able to lift, push, or carry 30 pounds.</li><li>
Must perform the duties of my job in a stressful and often austere environment without physical limitations.</li><li>
