  Responsibilities

 </strong>
 The Phlebotomy Technician I primarily perform skin puncture or venipuncture on patients of all ages for the purpose of obtaining a blood specimen for analysis in the clinical laboratory and is under the supervision of Laboratory Director / Manager / Supervisor. The PT I; 1) performs computer data entry, filing, telephone communication and other clerical duties, 2) possesses adequate knowledge of the terminology of tests ordered in the laboratory, 3) demonstrates good communication skills and telephone etiquette in greeting patients and other visitors in a polite and friendly manner, 4) demonstrates proper phlebotomy technique and the use of equipment in collecting specimens from newborns to geriatric patients, 5) processes microbiology, immunology, hematology, coagulation, urinalysis, chemistry and blood bank specimens, 6) processes specimens for referral to reference laboratories, 7) stocks routine supplies, 8) maintains the cleanliness of storage areas, trays, centrifuges, refrigerators, freezers and work areas, 9) processes or load specimens on automated laboratory instrumentation in accordance with established policy and procedures, 10) May be assist to Pick up samples at hospital/ OR, assist lab specialty in sorting out samples for analysis and put away samples, assist pathology, inventory, replenish supplies, order supplies, mail pick up/ delivery, faxing, answering phone, product deliveries, etc.. 11) other tasks or responsibilities may be assigned by the department manager/director.

Work with other Digital Pathology, Histology, or Cytology laboratory personnel to process and/or store patient casework with optimal efficiency and accuracy (e.g. basic</li><li>
sample preparation and setup of assays, loading instrument or automation lines, filing of slides and blocks).</li></ul><p><b>
Maintain and Operate Instruments*/Laboratory Support:</b></p><ul><li>
Perform and document daily maintenance as specified in instrument procedures.</li><li>
Analyze patient samples/slides as specified in the instrument procedures.</li><li>
Enter information into laboratory databases or picture archive communication systems (PACS).</li><li>
Ensure continuous operation by routinely monitoring the status of reagents, parts and supplies.</li><li>

Using highly specified standard work, accessions anatomic pathology cases by typing<br>
clinical history into information systems, and printing cassettes. Triages and tracks a<br>
variety of cases and materials. Must be able to transcribe Pathology reports using<br>
laboratory information systems with a high degree of accuracy. Requires rapid data entry<br>
with good spelling and grammar, proofreading for accuracy and completeness, and<br>
follow-up as needed with customers for missing information. Candidates must have the<br>
ability to code diagnoses into the Lab and patient information systems.<br>
<b>PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:</b><br>
1. Accession surgical cases that arrive in the Pathology laboratory by routine referral,<br>
as well as outside surgical pathology consults and occasionally outside autopsy<br>
reports. Preparation includes typing demographics from surgical request forms<br>
from OR or clinics, typing clinical history, assigning pathologist, entering billing<br>
information, making corrections, typing addendums, revising and correcting<br>
reports.<br>
2. Collate and transport slides and reports for members of the Pathology staff.<br>
3. Print surgical batch and discard logs.<br>
4. Triage and track specimens. Rehabilitate specimens if necessary and call to obtain<br>
any missing information. Participates in process improvements to track and<br>
reduce defects.<br>
5. Receive and screen phone calls in a polite and helpful manner and following<br>
policies on the proper method for release of information.</p>

</p><p>Under the general supervision of the Administrative Laboratory Director, obtains patient specimens, performs laboratory tests on blood, urine, body fluids, feces, and reports test results according to prescribed laboratory policies and procedures. Primarily responsible for microscopic screening for detection of abnormal human cells and organisms, assisting with cytopreparations and Fine Needle Aspiration collections as needed, and computer result/data entry related to test orders and reporting. Will maintain a thorough knowledge of conditions appropriate to laboratory test performance, including specimen collection, transport preservation, processing, staining, screening, computer proficiency, specimen storage/disposal, and filing of slides/requisitions/QA materials. Will develop and maintain a high standard of operation and will act a resource person for new employees. The Cytotechnologist will report directly to the Cytology Supervisor and Pathologist in charge of the Cytology Division.<br>

<li>Demonstrates competence to provide developmentally appropriate care/treatment for the following patient population: infant (birth to 1 year), child (1 year through 12 years), adolescent (13 years through 17 years), adult (18 years to 65 years), and geriatric (over 65 years).</li>
<li>Microscopic evaluate and mark any abnormalities or significant findings with appropriate ink markings. Write diagnostic impression in appropriate form.</li>
<li>Document slide statistics on appropriate form.</li>
<li>Directly report all negative cases with the exception of the 10% of total negatives that are referred to the pathologist for a second review as pat of quality assurance program.</li>
<li>Refer all screened gynecologic cases evaluated as BCC and above to the pathologist along with the written impression.</li>
<li>Refer all non-gynecological cases with or without abnormal findings to the pathologist along with the written impression.</li>
<li>Retrieve clinical information and previous history reports to attach to referred cases as appropriate.</li>

<li>Place all finished paperwork and slides in appropriate place for filing.</li>
<li>Cytopreparatory functions including specimen receipt, identification, accessioning, processing by direct smear preparation, centrifugation, cytocentrifugation, cell block preparation or thin-layer preparation.</li>
<li>Staining with appropriate standard series of solutions, coverslipping and labeling of slides.</li>
<li>Perform periodic maintenance of stainline, instruments, equipment and microscopes and document such activities.</li>

<li>Performs assigned duties efficiently and effectively in a timely organized manner.</li>
<li>Performs all other duties as assigned by authorized personnel or as required in an emergency, e.g. fire or disaster.</li>
<li>Promote smooth exchange of specimens, reports and phone communication between nursing service, medical staff, physician office personnel and cytology department.</li>
<li>Informs other laboratory personnel of circumstances that may effect the quality of work.</li>
<li>Active participation the LMC Service Excellence Program with on-going demonstration of active contributions to service excellence relative to cytology services.</li>
