<div>Provides support services for the clinical or anatomical laboratories by resolving problems with orders and/or specimens and by responding to telephone inquiries for test results and specimen collection criteria.

Where applicable: prepares coolers for blood delivery, receives blood product inventory, scans digital slides, files slides and tissue blocks, and performs daily, weekly and monthly maintenance of equipment. Receives and delivers specimens and reports. Laboratory support functions may also include, but are not limited to, developing and maintaining ordering and inventory processes/systems; assisting with employee time keeping; pay reference lab invoices; providing data entry assistance and general glassware maintenance. Maintains workload recording to include quality control as required for area/department. Receives specimens in the laboratory and performs pre-analytical specimen manipulation/preparation for analysis which includes but is not limited to accessioning orders via Laboratory Computer System, verifying technical specimen acceptability, and performing pre-analytical procedures. Pre-analytical procedures may include aliquoting specimens for technical analysis, plating specimens for microbiologic growth, specimen manipulation/preparation for testing, preparing smears, preparing specimens for shipping utilizing knowledge of specimen handling and shipping of dangerous goods in accordance with laboratory policy in an accurate, safe, and timely manner.

<li>Enter orders in EPIC and Copath (HIS and LIS) with utmost accuracy. Contributes to monthly QA to be maintained for the department.</li>
<li>Accurately match and label specimen container with requisition for surgical number.</li>
<li>Accurately label cassettes with surgical number.</li>
<li>Maintain specimen deficiencies in the Copath.</li>
<li>Maintain Breast specimen QA/QC logs in Excel.</li>
<li>Prepare agar (makes agar and store, fill agar tubes for all heat blocks, black agar for all grossing areas.)</li>
<li>Solutions/Fluids/Slide Preps: Prepare alcohol solutions 70%, 80%, 95% and keep stocked; also similarly for Hartman&rsquo;s and Cryostat Fixative.</li>
<li>Compile case histories for pending surgical cases.</li>

<li>Maintain schedules such as: Changing VIP solutions, disposing of hazardous chemicals in 55 gallon drums, recycling chemicals, neutralizing 10% formalin before disposal, etc. (See written procedures.)</li>
<li>Assist Pathologist and PA with specimen dissections and other requests as instructed.</li>
<li>Acquire and maintain basic proficiency at histotechnology to produce basic frozen section slides, includes staining and coverslipping.</li>
<li>Collect, transport and sort solutions for recycling (ethanol and xylene). Maintain efficient recycling habits while insuring the highest quality recycling products.</li>
<li>Maintain recycling logs.</li>

</b></p>Performs routine and stat clinical pathology testing appropriate to the laboratory discipline and reports results in a timely manner with occasional guidance. Responsible for the accurate performance of laboratory tests and other duties in a manner that complies with all approved protocols. Utilizes basic problem-solving skills to assure accurate and reliable clinical outcomes.
