Utilizes the Summary of Patient Reimbursement and Liability form and obtains appropriate approvals as required.</li><li>
Performs financial counseling process and forwards to Billing Office.</li><li>
Assists patients in obtaining financial assistance (i.e. Medicaid, drug replacement), outside assistance (i.e. transportation or other community services), and all appropriate forms filled out.</li><li>
Collects co-pay, deductible and other out of pocket amounts at time of visit.</li><li>
Assists in maintaining manuals, logs and other required documentation as required.</li><li>
Demonstrates as understanding for patient confidentiality to protect the patient and the clinic/corporation.</li><li>

Overview</b></p><p>
Under the general direction of the Yale Medicine Pre-Estimation Manager, the Financial Counselor plays a critical role in supporting patients through the financial aspects of their care journey. This position is primarily responsible for proactively engaging with patients to determine their financial responsibility and provide clear, personalized estimates of the anticipated costs for medical services prior to those services being rendered.</p><p>
The Financial Counselor initiates direct communication with patients, via phone, secure messaging, or in-person consultations to explain insurance coverage, out-of-pocket obligations, and available payment options. This position is a remote position where you will work from home/virtually once training is completed and performance-based competency has been obtained. High speed internet is a requirement for this position and the cost is the responsibility of the staff member. The Patient Benefits Representative, under general supervision is responsible for educating patient on insurance coverage and benefits. Assess patients financial ability; may educate patient on assistance programs. Updates and maintains existing patient new insurance eligibility, coverage, and benefits in system. Prior to a patient receiving treatment; obtains insurance coverage information and demographics; educates patient on insurance coverage, benefits, co-pays, deductibles, and out-of-pocket expenses.
</li><li>Assess patients ability to meet expenses and discusses payment arrangements. May educate patients on financial assistance programs as well as identify sources and provide assistance with completing forms. Based upon diagnosis, estimated insurance coverage, and financial assistance, completes Patient Cost Estimate form.
</li><li>Completes appropriate reimbursement and liability forms for patient&rsquo;s review and signature. Forwards appropriate information and forms to billing office.</li><li>
Responsible for obtaining, from Clinical Reviewer, insurance pre-authorization or referral approval codes prior to each treatment.</li><li>

Qualifications:

</li><li>Proficiency with computer systems and Microsoft Office (Word and Excel) required.
