Under direct supervision of a licensed Nurse or other professional medical staff in a health care setting, performs a variety of clerical and health-related essential duties and responsibilities associated with patient care; performs related work.</p><p><b>
Examples of Typical Tasks</b>:</p><p>
1. Checks vital signs, weighs, and measures patients, obtains specimens and records findings on patient&rsquo;s chart.</p><p>
2. Instructs patients on how to obtain specimens for laboratory testing and performs basic specimen screening<br>

3. Prepares collected specimens for pick-up by labeling and preparing required form(s).</p><p>

8. Prepares examination room including cleaning and disinfecting of instruments and equipment.</p><p>
9. Informs patients on proper preparation for various medical testing.</p><p>
10. Interviews patient to obtain routine personal and medical information and appropriate health history.</p><p>
11. Maintains, completes, processes and files patients&rsquo; charts, appropriate forms and documents.</p><p>
12. Reports observations of patient to clinical staff caring for patient to ensure professional assessment.</p><p>
13. Answers routine inquiries of patients in person or via telephone and makes appropriate referrals.</p><p>
14. Provides information to patients and their families regarding health care services and the achievement of<br>
healthy, safe living.</p><p>
15. Maintains inventory of the unit&rsquo;s equipment stock and supplies.</p><p>
16. Works effectively as a team member in the delivery of care and assists in the orientation of new employees.</p><p>
17. Directs and escorts patients to other departments and/or health care settings, as needed.</p><p>
18. Coordinates efforts of various clinic and health care setting departments in scheduling and re-booking appointments through manual and/or automated systems and enters pertinent patient information into the Electronic Medical Record systems.</p><p>
19. Obtains blood specimens for laboratory testing by performing venipuncture and/or fingerstick testing.</p><p>
20. Operates electrocardiograph equipment to record electrical wave tracing of the electrical currents of the heart muscle.</p>

electrocardiography (EKG), or completion of a training program or programs that include the performance of phlebotomy and EKG, such as Phlebotomy Technician and EKG Technician training programs, a Patient Care training program, or a Medical Assistant training program; and<br>
3. Holds, or obtains through facility orientation, a valid and current certification in Basic Life Support (BLS) through the American Heart Association (AHA).<br>

In this role, the successful candidate Assists the professional nurse in the care of patients and families by completing assigned patient care tasks; provides competent, safe, and compassionate care with emphasis on an understanding of the challenges faced by hospitalization, undergoing procedures or diagnostic tests; provides support to the unit in the maintenance and safety of supplies, equipment and the environment; demonstrates NYU Langone Health Core Values in all aspects of job performance.</p>

Job Responsibilities:</b></p>

</li><li>Utilizes specialized skills and safety when carrying out specific tasks of patient care as assigned, including phlebotomy, fingersticks for glucose, and electrocardiograms.
</li><li>Demonstrates understanding of infection prevention and control standards.
</li><li>Assists in data collection and activities as assigned. Assists in maintaining safety and comfort needs of patients and families. Assists with admission, transfer and discharge procedures per unit / service operations.
</li><li>Verbally and non-verbally communicates responsiveness and support to patients, families, and other staff.
</li><li>Observes general behavior and reports same to the registered nurse to whom assigned.
</li><li>Performs safety observations for patients on continuous observation or in restraints, per policy and as directed.
</li><li>Provides assistance to patients in the activities as applicable.
</li><li>Completes delegated responsibilities as directed by the registered nurse.
</li><li>Uses a clear, caring and respectful communication style with patients and families, nurses and other members of the health care team. Functions as a respectful member of the health care team.
</li><li>Answers patients call lights promptly and effectively; completes patient requests for assistance with personal care and activity, and reports those requests not within the role of the patient care technician to the professional nurse assigned to the patient.
</li><li>Reports all observations concerning patients to the professional nurse responsible for the patient on a given shift Responds to requests for specific tasks as delegated by any registered professional nurse.
</li><li>Provides for security of patients personal property, and handles valuables according to hospital procedure. Maintains cleanliness of the nursing unit as appropriate to position. (i.e., utility room, unit refrigerators, etc.).
</li><li>Gives direct assistance to all team members, including registered nurses, licensed practical nurses, physicians, nursing attendants, patient unit clerks, escort, dietary and other health care employees.
</li><li>Assists in having patient ready for scheduled appointments including placing the patient on a stretcher or in a wheelchair.Runs errands to other departments, including but not limited to, the delivery of specimens and equipment.
</li><li>Assists in keeping patient environment, patient equipment and patient care areas/units clean, safe and orderly.
</li><li>Ensures that necessary equipment and supplies are present in the patient rooms and on the unit.</li><br>

<p></p><p><b>Minimum Qualifications:</b><br>
To qualify you must have a Patient Care Technician Minimum Qualifications: High School graduate or equivalent required. Graduate of a PCT program w/ at least 6 months hospital experience OR CNA graduate plus course completion in EKG &amp; Phlebotomy and PCT certification eligible plus at least 6 months hospital experience, OR PCT Certification through National Healthcareer Association (NHA) w/ at least 6 months hospital experience. BLS or Heartsaver CPR/AED certification. (Issued by the American Heart Association-AHA) OR Heartsaver CPR/AED certification (Issued by the American Heart Association-AHA) is required upon entry to the position Must complete PCT online program within 3 months of hire.<br>
Senior Nursing Attendant Minimum Qualifications: High School Diploma or equivalent Required. Graduate of Certified Nursing Attendant Program, certified as a CNA and at least 6 months relevant experience. BLS or Heartsaver CPR/AED certification (Issued by the American Heart Association-AHA) is required upon entry to the position. Competencies: Working knowledge of English is evident in verbal, reading and writing abilities; other language an asset; Strong customer service and communication skills..
