Under oversight, manages the daily patient transport/escort operations throughout the health care setting. Identifies activities that the System has implemented to promote patient safety and takes the necessary steps to ensure a safe environment for patients, visitors, and staff. Acts in compliance with NYC Health + Hospitals, health care setting, and other appropriate regulatory requirements and patient safety standards. Participates in continuous quality improvement initiatives relating to patient transport.<br>

<b>Essential Duties and Responsibilities</b>:<br>
<br>
1. Supervises the department&rsquo;s operational flow and manages staff, routes, and schedules; interprets data to identify trends and other factors that impact operational activity.<br>
<br>
2. Supervises patient escort/transport staff and responds to patient concerns to promote quality patient care.<br>
<br>
3. Assists social workers, physicians, nursing and other appropriate staff with patient transportation issues, and provides assistance with vendor, patient and/or staff concerns.<br>
<br>
4. Schedules transportation services for ambulatory care and discharged patients, ensures timely, safe, and efficient transportation services, and reviews daily patient schedule and dispatches transportation calls to vendor, when appropriate.<br>

5. Prepares patient escort assignments and monthly schedules and monitors and adjusts schedules for proper coverage; prepares and maintains timekeeping responsibilities for staff.<br>

6. Trains and orients new employees and acts as resource for staff on any operational questions or patient transport matters.<br>

7. Reviews NYS Department of Health Medicaid Patient transportation Authorization forms (MAP 2015) for patient needing non-emergent transportation, as appropriate.<br>

</div><p><b>Purpose of Position</b>:</p><p>
This position is an integral part of the health care setting service and the incumbent receives assignments from the appropriate employee in charge of patient and messenger escort, in accordance with the operational procedures determined by health care setting leadership. Transports patients to and from the Nursing Service and all other patient areas for specialized treatment and examinations as a primary function, but will also perform such other duties as required.</p><p><b>
Examples of Typical Tasks</b>:</p><p>
1. Obtains patient escort assignments and schedules from a designated Dispatcher/Supervisor, Service Department and reports to Nurse-in-Charge.</p><p>
2. Introduces self to patient, explains the nature of the trip, and escorts the patient to and from the Nursing Service to a designated area until someone else assumes responsibility for the patient or given another assignment by the Nursing Supervisor and reports back to the Dispatcher/Supervisor, Service Department.</p><p>
3. Transports patients by wheelchair, stretcher, bed or stretcher-bed, and escorts ambulatory patients, including those with intravenous apparatus to and from various nursing units, x-ray, scheduled therapies, various clinics, other diagnostic and therapeutic units, transfers, discharges, religious and recreation centers within the healthcare setting, accompany children to school within.</p><p>
4. Maintains control of patients&rsquo; charts and releases same only to authorized personnel.</p><p>
5. Maintains records of patient transport activities including the time a patient is picked-up, time of patient&rsquo;s arrival at a specified area and time of patient&rsquo;s return to the Nursing Service.</p><p>
6. Places patients in and out of wheelchair, stretcher, bed, and morgue tray and obtains assistance, if necessary. Positions patents on tables in such areas as x-ray, P.T., etc. and uses Hoyer lifters and other patient lifting devices.</p><p>
7. Escorts newly-admitted patients to designated areas in the health care setting complex and assists them in storing their luggage, packages, clothing and other items.</p><p>
8. Transports bodies and/or assists Mortuary Caretaker in transporting same to the mortuary and places in refrigerator and, when necessary, searches D.O.A.&rsquo;s, completes the required D.O.A.&rsquo;s reports, transports fetus, amputated parts or other specimen to morgue; delivers specimens, charts, x-rays, etc. to and from specified area (such as O.R., wards, laboratories, etc.).</p><p>
9. Responsible for the ready availability, upkeep and cleanliness of wheelchairs, stretchers, stretcher beds and morgue trays, sterilization of incoming patients&rsquo; clothing and other items, when required.</p><p>
10. Performs such other duties as are necessary, when assigned (e.g., collect and deliver regular and emergency requisitions for x-ray, electrocardiograph, basal metabolism, physiotherapy and other diagnostic tests and treatments, assists with transporting various equipment and supplies and other messenger assignment).</p>

Responsibilities</b><p>
1. Maintains institution and patient rooms in safe, clean and functional condition by completing sanitary and housekeeping tasks in a timely manner and according to established procedures.</p>

2. Performs emergency clean-up of housekeeping tasks according to established procedures.</p>

3. Transports patients on stretchers or wheelchairs and/or transports specimens, equipment and patient belongings according to established procedures.</p>

4. Monitors, reports and corrects if appropriate, any unsafe or dysfunctional condition(s).</p>

5. Maintains in-wall cabinet stack at par level.</p>
<p>
6. Obtains patient charts and test order requests per established procedures.</p>

7. Performs other duties as assigned, including generation of reports.</p>
