    The Pharmacy Technician II works under the direct supervision of the pharmacist as stated by the Virginia Board of Pharmacy and reports to the Pharmacy Operations Supervisor. The technician assists the pharmacist and other health care professionals in the medication distribution system. In addition to the Pharmacy Technician I job functions, the Pharmacy Technician II is responsible for preparing new and refilled IV medication orders, compounding IV stock solutions, and compounding TPNs.

   ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  </li>
  <ul>
   <li>
    Uses computer and relevant programs to access patient records to charge/credit patients for medications, and to verify patient&rsquo;s location.
   </li>
   <li>
    Organizes and prioritizes phone calls and window traffic, and keeps the pharmacist informed.
   </li>
   <li>
    Collects and organizes all pertinent information under the direction of the pharmacist.
   </li>
   <li>
    Recognizes and prioritizes stat and emergency medication orders.
   </li>
   <li>
    Appropriately uses and maintains all equipment ensuring it is clean and in working order.
   </li>
   <li>
    Performs stock rotation, ordering, and maintaining appropriate stock levels.
   </li>
   <li>
    Appropriately stores medications in their designated areas.
   </li>
   <li>
    Compounds and/or prepackages oral suspensions, ointments/creams, unit dose oral syringes, inhalants, and tablets.
   </li>
   <li>
    Accurately prepares patient-specific doses with correct medication, concentration/strength, and dose.
   </li>
   <li>
    Labels patient medications properly and applies auxiliary labels when necessary.
   </li>
   <li>
    Prepares medications for loading/refilling into automated dispensing devices, and to accurately place medications in the designated location.
   </li>
   <li>
    Demonstrates ability to deliver patient-specific medications to the correct patient drawer, and remove expired medications from patient drawers appropriately.
   </li>
   <li>
    Develops rapport with patient care units by being highly visible and available to serve their needs and address concerns as they arise.
   </li>
   <li>
    Accurately uses aseptic technique when preparing sterile preparations. Accurately prepares and compounds medications including IV fluids, parenteral nutrition, medicated drips, and sterile syringes. Accurately compounds bulk sterile stock solutions and assigns proper expiration dates based on hospital policy.
   </li>
   <li>
    Appropriately prepares medication orders, compounds stock solutions, and sort&rsquo;s products and doses using IV pharmacy workflow technology. Construct TPN compounder and utilize compounder to fill TPN and bulk fluid orders efficiently. Ensures equipment is clean, and maintained in working order.
   </li>
   <li>
    Responsible for properly cleaning IV room laminar flow hoods in accordance with regulations and manufacturer guidelines (USP 797).
   </li>
   <li>
    Restock IV clean room when supplies are low, and at the end of shift. Reviews stock for outdated medications.
   </li>
   <li>
    Performs other duties as assigned.

    Certified with the Virginia Board of Pharmacy as a Pharmacy Technician OR

CHRISTUS Santa Rosa Hospital - Westover Hills (CSRH-WH) is a 253-bed hospital serving the fastest- growing area of San Antonio. Specialized care includes orthopedic and surgical care with advanced spine surgery, Intensive Care, complex neurology for treating stroke and other neurovascular issues, comprehensive cardiovascular care from diagnostics to open heart surgery, vascular lab, sleep center, women&rsquo;s services, a newborn nursery, the CHRISTUS Weight Loss Institute, wound care, rehabilitation, emergency services, and more. The campus also boasts an Outpatient Imaging Center, an Ambulatory Surgery Center, and four medical plazas, one of which houses our CHRISTUS Santa Rosa Family Medicine Residency Program and CHRISTUS Santa Rosa Family Health Center.</p>
<p>Summary:</p>
<p>All pharmacy technicians work under the direction of Clinical Pharmacists to provide pharmacy services with compassion, excellence and efficiency.</p>
<p>Responsibilities:</p><br>

Pharmacy Technicians perform ONLY non-judgmental technical duties under the direct supervision of a pharmacist.</li></ul>
<p>Operational Duties and Responsibilities</p>
<ul><li>Assist Pharmacists with Medication Histories.</li><li>
Train Tech I associates.</li><li>
Prepares drug orders per physician request according to established policies, procedures and protocols.
<ul><li>Verifies computerized patient medication records accurately. Maintains, accurate, complete patient drug record.</li><li>
Compounds pharmaceuticals including non-sterile and sterile products, chemotherapy and parenteral nutrition products accurately.</li><li>
Issues controlled substances to patient care areas and maintains records as required by law and institutional policies.</li><li>
Provides services efficiently and in a timely fashion.</li></ul></li><li>
Verifies the daily activities of the department are complete and recorded.</li><li>
Maintains competency required for current job title/position</li><li>
Maintains current technician license. Ensures applicable CE records and licensure are maintained in department files. Attends staff meetings.</li><li>
Maintain IV certification and competencies.</li><li>
Completes all competency/skills assessment requirements.</li><li>
Specialty area
<ul><li>Serves as the technician in specialty areas such as the operating room, IV room, or pharmacy work areas outside the central pharmacy.</li></ul></li><li>
Ambulatory care
<ul><li>Provides ambulatory pharmaceutical care services as assigned such as but not limited to: anticoagulation clinics, intensive medical home, transition of care, Discharge Medication reconciliation, etc.</li></ul></li><li>
Retail
<ul><li>Performs outpatient distributive functions related to entering prescriptions orders, selecting the correct medications for new and refilled prescription orders, and coordinates delivery of medications for patient pick-up or delivery.</li></ul></li></ul>
<p>Clinical Duties and Responsibilities</p>
<ul><li>Ensures safe, appropriate, cost-effective drug therapies for patients according to established policies, procedures, and protocols.</li><li>
Reads, extracts and interprets information in patient medical records accurately.</li><li>
Detects and reports suspected adverse drug reactions accurately and in a timely manner.</li><li>
Sustains the hospital drug formulary, minimizing non-formulary procurements, utilizing therapeutic substitution protocols and promoting rational drug therapy selection.</li><li>
Provides accurate, adequate and timely drug information to the hospital&rsquo;s pharmacy associates.</li><li>
Coordinates pharmacist drug education to patients and their families per institutional protocol.</li><li>
Participates in the quality improvement and medication use review activities of the department. Collects data, conducts monitors and inspections and maintains logs, records and other documentation as assigned.</li><li>
Conducts designated interventions as defined in department Clinical Intervention activities (IV to PO, Renal Dosing, Pharmacokinetic dosing support, Anticoagulation)
<ul><li>Baseline departmental standards for reporting interventions for clinical productivity as defined by departmental goals.</li></ul></li><li>
Provides services efficiently and in a timely fashion</li></ul>
<p>Occupational Hazards</p>
<ul><li>Potential for exposure to hazardous and toxic substances (including chemotherapeutic, cytotoxic drugs and cleaning solutions), sticks or cuts by needles and other sharp items.</li><li>

Potential for musculoskeletal injuries if proper lifting and carrying techniques are not used. Potential exposure to biologic material when participating in direct patient care activities (e.g. patient education, code attendance).</li></ul>

<p><b>Experience</b></p>
<ul><li>3-5 years of pharmacy technician experience preferred</li><li>

<p><b>Licenses, Registrations, or Certifications</b></p>
<ul><li>Registered Pharmacy Technician in the state of practice required</li><li>
Certified Pharmacy Technician preferred</li><li>
ACPE accredited IV certification program, including hazardous (minimum 40 hours); or meet minimum State requirement. Not applicable to Ambulatory Care settings or Retail settings</li></ul>
<p>In accordance with the CHRISTUS Health License, Certification and Registration Verification Policy, all Associates are required to obtain the required certifications for their respective positions within the designated time frame.</p><br>
