JOB SUMMARY </b>Laboratory Assistants/Phlebotomists are non-professional personnel with training in areas of the clinical laboratory useful to the overall efficiency and smooth operation of the laboratory. These areas include: phlebotomy, preparation of send out tests, answering the telephone, and assisting in the chemistry, hematology, and microbiology areas of the laboratory. The purpose of the job description is to provide information on how this useful assistance can be given. In order to qualify for this position, one must be able to work independently all the requirements as described for a Laboratory Assistant. This person should be versatile in all aspect of the laboratory as well as a team player to assist in not only performing, but coordinating the duties and responsibilities of the Laboratory Assistant in order to relieve the Clinical Laboratory Scientist the responsibilities of the phlebotomy and processing area, which includes the send out and microbiology set-ups. This person must have an extensive computer and LIS capability to manage and troubleshoot any problems in the processing area as well as the billing aspect. This person needs to be able to demonstrate proficiency in assisting and gaining the confidence of the Clinical Laboratory Scientist to perform the designated automated instruments.</p><div></div><div><b><br>
EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, TRAINING</b></div><ul><li>
High school education or its equivalent experience (An AA or Bachelor's degree is preferred.)</li><li>
Two years of experience as a phlebotomist.</li><li>
Certified for venipuncture and skin puncture CPT.</li><li>
Be able to communicate well in English both in writing and verbally.</li><li>
Minimum of four years of experience in a clinical laboratory with at least two years of experience as a Laboratory Technician a lead laboratory assistant, and or a Lab Assistant Supervisor, or show equivalent experience.</li><li>
Have at least two years of LIS experience and computer knowledge, or show proficiency.</li><li>
Have good organizational skills.</li><li>

This position has the responsibility and accountability for accurately performing phlebotomy and specimen collection of inpatients and/or outpatients. Samples collected by the phlebotomist are used for laboratory test procedures that are essential in the diagnosis and treatment of patients. The Phlebotomist may also perform computer, courier, and clerical functions that are essential to laboratory operations. Following proper patient identification procedures, procures appropriate blood specimens by venipuncture, heelstick and fingerstick. As required, instructs patients on the collection procedures for laboratory specimens that are obtained by the patient, and may collect samples other than blood.</li><li>
Demonstrates dependability, reliability, and independent judgment recognizing priorities to accommodate department needs and acceptance of appropriate authority.</li><li>
Specimen collection may be performed at off-site locations. Transports specimens from on- and off-site collection areas to the appropriate section of the laboratory following established safety procedures.</li><li>
Adhere to established laboratory and hospital policies in areas of procedures, methods, quality control, quality assurance, safety, including hand hygiene techniques and proper isolation precautions., compliance and personnel policies.</li><li>
As required, performs related clerical duties, and utilizes various computer functions to accurately enter demographic information into the information system(s), enters test orders, receives, cancels, charges, and credits tests, while ascertaining adequacy of patient information as well as sample identity.</li><li>
Trains and orients new employees, students and residents, as applicable and as assigned.</li><li>
Inform technical staff, supervisory personnel and/or pathologists of any unusual or problematic incidents.</li><li>
May also perform arterial puncture following strict collection and post collection guidelines.</li><li>
Monitors and maintains supplies for those functions for which the position is responsible; uses materials and reagents in a cost-effective manner.</li></ul></div><div><ul><li>
