JOB DESCRIPTION</b><br>
<b>SUMMARY</b><br>
The Police Officer is responsible for the efficient performance of his/her duties in conformance with the rules, regulations, and policies contained in this job description.</p><p><b>
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES</b><br>
An officer's duties shall consist of, but are not necessarily limited to, several general police responsibilities necessary to the stability and safety of his community. Responsibilities are:</p><ul><li>
Exercise authority consistent with the obligations imposed by oath of office and be accountable to his superior officers, promptly obeying legitimate orders.</li><li>
Coordinate efforts with those of other members of the Department so that their teamwork may ensure continuity of purpose and maximum achievement of police objectives.</li><li>
Communicate to his superiors and to fellow officers all information he may obtain which is pertinent to the achievement of police objectives.</li><li>
Respond punctually to all assignments.</li><li>
Acquire and record information concerning events that have taken place since last tour of duty.</li><li>
Maintain weapons and equipment in a functional, presentable condition.</li><li>
Record activity during his tour of duty in the manner prescribed by his superiors. Complete detailed reports on all crimes, vehicle accidents and other incidents requiring police attention. In cases where an arrest is made, an arrest report is submitted along with the required crime reports. When property is recovered or additional information is discovered pertaining to a previously investigated offense, the officer completes an investigation report.</li><li>
Assist citizens requesting service, assistance, or information, and courteously explain any instance where jurisdiction does not lie with the Police Department and suggest other procedures to be followed.</li><li>
Be alert to the development of conditions tending to cause crime, take preventive action to correct such conditions, and inform superiors as soon as the situation permits.</li><li>
Be accountable for the securing, receipting, and proper transporting of all evidence and property coming into custody.</li><li>
Identify criminal offenders and criminal activity and, where appropriate, apprehend offenders and participate in subsequent court proceedings.</li><li>
Conduct a thorough investigation of all offenses and incidents within area of assignment and scope of activity. He shall collect evidence and record data which will aid in identification, apprehension, and prosecution of offenders and the recovery of property.</li><li>
Patrol an assigned area for general purposes of crime prevention and law enforcement. Pay special attention to any conditions conducive to crime or indicative of criminal activity. Patrol includes apprehending persons violating the law or wanted by the police; public assembly checks&middot; building security checks&middot; observation and interrogation of suspicious persons; issuing traffic citations; locating fires; reporting streetlight and traffic signals out of order; street hazards and any conditions that endanger public safety; checks of schools, parks, and playgrounds; responding to any public emergency.</li><li>
Respond to situations brought to attention while during routine patrol or assigned by radio. Render first aid to persons who are seriously ill or injured. Assist persons needing police services.</li><li>
Answer questions asked by the general public, counsel juveniles and adults when necessary and refer them to persons or agencies where they can obtain further assistance.</li><li>
Preserve the peace at public gatherings, neighborhood disputes and family quarrels.</li><li>
Serve or deliver warrants, summonses, subpoenas, and other official papers promptly and accurately, when so directed by a superior officer.</li><li>
Confer with court prosecutors and testify in court.</li><li>
If assigned to operate a motor vehicle, see that it is well maintained mechanically and that it is kept clean both inside and out. Inspect the vehicle at the beginning of the tour of duty for any defects or missing equipment. Immediately report all defects and damage sustained to the vehicle to the proper authority and complete all reports and forms required by current procedures. Use the call number assigned to the care to contact headquarters.</li><li>
Operate the radio in line with FCC regulations and current departmental procedures.</li><li>
Remain on assigned route throughout his tour of duty except when a police emergency necessitates a temporary absence, or when a superior officer or the Dispatcher has issued such authorization.</li><li>
Patrol every part of beat giving particular attention to and frequently rechecking locations where the crime hazard is great. Insofar as possible shall not patrol area according to any fixed route or schedule but shall alternate frequently and back track to be at the location least expected.</li><li>
Be alert to all nuisances, impediments, obstructions, defects, or other conditions that might endanger or hinder the safety, health, or convenience of the public within patrol area.</li><li>
Take measures to direct the flow of traffic in area during periods of congestion. If more than a temporary absence from regular duties is required, notify the Commanding Officer.</li><li>
Make periodic reports to the station.</li><li>
Always keep radio equipment in operation and be thoroughly familiar with departmental policy concerning use of the radios.</li><li>
Direct and expedite the flow of traffic at assigned intersections keeping in mind duty as a traffic Police Officer in preventing accidents, protecting pedestrians, and ensuring the flow of traffic.</li><li>
Enforce the parking ordinances and motor vehicle laws in area.</li><li>
When called from a traffic post for emergency police service, respond immediately and notify the station at the earliest possible opportunity.</li><li>
Wear the prescribed traffic safety clothing and equipment.</li><li>
Reduce the opportunities for the commission of crime through preventive patrol and other measures.</li><li>
Aid individuals who are in danger of physical harm.</li><li>
Facilitate the movement of vehicular and pedestrian traffic.</li><li>
Identify problems that are potentially serious law enforcement or governmental problems.</li><li>
Create and maintain a feeling of security in the community.</li><li>
Promote and preserve peace.</li><li>
Provide other services on an emergency basis.</li><li>
Perform other related duties as required.</li></ul><p><b>
DESIRED MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS</b></p><ul><li>
Associate&rsquo;s degree (A.A.) or equivalent from a two-year college or technical school, or six months to one year of related experience and/or training; or an equivalent combination of education &amp; experience.</li><li>
Massachusetts Police Academy Certification in accordance with MGL 41 is preferred.</li><li>

SUPERVISION RECEIVED</b><br>
This position works under the supervision and direction of the Chief of Police.</p><p>
 <b>WORK ENVIRONMENT</b><br>
Police and detective work can be physically demanding, stressful, and dangerous. Officers must be alert and ready to react throughout their entire shift. Officers regularly work at crime and accident scenes and encounter suffering and the results of violence.</p><p><b>

Duties include the prevention and/or detection of criminal activity and the general enforcement of city, county, state and federal laws and ordinances, along with Granite School District policies and procedures, involving any student, teacher, staff, administrator, patron or property of the school district. Police officers routinely patrol the properties of the school district and serve as School Resources Officers. They respond on silent burglar/fire alarms, dispatched crimes in-progress and calls for service of a police nature. Maintains a clean, safe, healthy, and secure educational environment for the Granite School District. Attendance, physical presence, and timeliness are required and are essential functions of this position.<br>
<br>
<b>Essential Functions</b><br>
<ul><li>Routinely inspects district facilities to prevent and/or detect acts of vandalism, burglary, arson, theft, assault, trespass, alcohol, tobacco and illicit drug consumption, weapons offenses, gang violence and various other unusual or unlawful activities.</li>
<li>Responds to emergency calls for service, including crimes-in-progress, and various bodily injury situations.</li>
<li>Responds to all dispatched, silent burglar alarms located on all district facilities in assigned patrol area.</li>
<li>Inspects the facility for evidence of forced entry and assesses the need to call for additional officers and/or K-9 units, to assist in searching the building for suspects.</li>
<li>Responds to all fire alarms, located on district facilities with-in assigned patrol area, along with the appropriate city and/or county fire departments.</li>
<li>Apprehends and arrests suspects involved in all types of criminal activities and, where applicable, transports same to appropriate incarceration facilities for formal booking.</li>
<li>Enforces all city, county, state and federal laws and ordinances, as well as district rules and policies, pertaining to school district properties and personnel.</li>
<li>Responds to after-hour and weekend or holiday emergency calls for district maintenance services in assigned patrol area.</li>
<li>Assesses the nature of the problem and has dispatch call out appropriate maintenance personnel and equipment.</li>
<li>Actively patrols district facilities, school grounds and parking lots, as well as neighboring businesses and subdivisions, in search of truants, trespassers and lost or missing persons.</li>
<li>Works with school staff to either return the truant to assigned school or class, or transports chronic truants to appropriate youth service facility.</li>
<li>When appropriate takes custody of students and transports them to appropriate youth service or detention facilities.</li>

<li>Books suspects into jail or youth detention if they have outstanding warrants or active pickup orders.</li>
<li>Submits daily written or computer-generated reports on all activities occurring during each shift.</li>
<li>Submits supplemental reports to various other law enforcement agencies upon request or when appropriate.</li>
<li>Prepares own case file packet to be used by police department investigator when screening criminal cases with city/county prosecutors and makes appropriate court appearances.</li>
<li>Packages, tags or photographs own evidence to be stored in department evidence room or submitted to crime lab, according to the requirements of state law, as well as department policy and procedure standards.</li>
<li>Routinely works with highly confidential material such as criminal background information, confidential law enforcement reports and intelligence bulletins, personnel files, financial records, etc.</li>
<li>Transports evidence to state crime lab for processing.</li>
<li>Interviews suspects, locates and interviews witnesses and serves arrest warrants on suspects already booked in jail.</li>
<li>Monitors and may participate in District School Board Meetings and other meetings at the request of the Chief or other administrators.</li>

This is a certified law enforcement position. While the work is generally routine, it may be performed in stressful situations. The applicant is required to interpret and apply federal, state, and local laws and regulations, which apply to assignment. <b>
This is the first rank of the Marietta Police force that includes both non-certified and certified officers. Certified officers are expected to demonstrate competency in law enforcement procedures. Works under the general supervision of an assigned sergeant. Performs a wide range of law enforcement functions including making arrests, issuing traffic tickets, crowd control and investigative work to promote public safety and security, crime prevention and general enforcement of the law.</b><br>
<ul><li>
Patrols assigned area to control traffic, prevent crime or disturbance of peace, and arrest violators as required. Officers will be issued various equipment to include a patrol car with radio, portable radio, various weapons, shoes and uniforms. Additional equipment will be issued for special assignments for bicycle patrol, narcotics units, forensic technician, detectives, K-9, STEP, etc.</li><li>
Identifies criminal offenders and criminal activity, and where appropriate apprehends offenders. Holds suspects and calls for back-up as needed. Participates in subsequent court proceedings as required.
</li><li>Responds to emergency dispatch including calls from citizens requesting emergency assistance in order to prevent injury, death, and/or damage to property. Calls out medical personnel as needed and provides emergency first aid, when necessary, until emergency personnel arrive.</li><li>
Provides assistance and backs up other officers as needed on dangerous calls. Holds suspects until prisoner transport unit arrives or makes transport themselves. Secures crime scene evidence and requests Field Evidence Technicians as needed.</li><li>
Enforces state and local laws by arresting violators who commit misdemeanors and felonies. Keeps current with changes in laws impacting law enforcement procedures including attending seminars and formal training as required.</li><li>
Appears in city, state, and federal courts as a witness or to defend charges as appropriate. Provides incident reports and related evidence to prosecutors and attorneys as needed.</li><li>
Engages in traffic control activities which include responding to traffic accidents; issuing traffic and parking citations; conducting sobriety tests, directing and re-routing traffic around accidents, street hazards and congestion; assisting persons stranded on public roadways; dispatches emergency personnel and tow trucks to clear traffic congestion.</li><li>
Completes daily shift activity and incident reports as required. Completes all report records for performance and court proceedings.</li><li>
May be assigned apprehension and detection activities which include interviewing victims, witnesses, and other involved parties; collecting evidence; assembling composites, photos, and line-ups for suspect identification; communicating with other agencies to obtain additional evidence; and documenting actions with daily reports.</li><li>
May be assigned surveillance, undercover, for observation of unlawful activities.</li></ul>

<b>Preferred Qualifications:</b><ul><li>
High school diploma or GED.</li><li>
Must be at least 19 3/4 years of age at time of written exam and a U.S. citizen (proof of U.S. citizenship at time of hire required).</li><li>
Must be fluent in the English language, (including reading, writing, and speaking).</li><li>
Must be able to pass a written entry examination, background investigation, and oral examination, polygraph examination, and drug screen.</li><li>
Must obtain a Georgia Peace Officer Standard Training certification (POST) by the end of working test period and maintain certification annually by attending at least 20 hours of POST approved training.</li><li>
Must achieve and maintain certification in the use of firearms.</li><li>
Must be free of any felony convictions, domestic violence convictions, or sufficient misdemeanor convictions to evidence a pattern. Must be of good habits and moral character.</li></ul><br>
