The Polysomnographic Technologist is responsible for performing nocturnal polysomnography, scoring, and performing therapeutic intervention for patients with sleep related breathing disorders. The technologist works collaboratively with other care team members, physicians and the patient/family to achieve optimal outcomes. Has access to confidential patient information and makes decisions independently and with others. This individual works under the direct supervision of the Lead Technician/Sleep Lab Manager.
Required Educational Degree: Technical Training
Major/Area of Concentration: Polysomnography (sleep technology)
Required Certifications, Credentials and Licenses: Must meet one of the following:
1) Sleep Technologist (RST) through American Board of Sleep Medicine (ABSM)
2) Registered Polysomnographic Technologist (RPSGT) through Board of Registered Polysomnographic Technologists (BRPT)
3) Certified Pulmonary Function Technologist (CPFT), Registered Pulmonary Function Technologist (RPFT), Certified Respiratory Therapist (CRT), or Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) through National Board for Respiratory Care (NBRC)
BLS - Basic Life Support required for all caregivers.

Performs all studies proficiently, in a timely manner and according to policy &bull; Explains the necessary steps for each procedure and test to patient and family members clearly and in a respectful and professional manner &bull; Ensures that the patient and their family understands explanations &bull; Discusses results of studies with physicians only &bull; Performs clerical functions in an accurate and timely manner, such as but not limited to, ordering supplies, filing, charting, etc. &bull; Accurately prepares data for physician interpretation (scoring) &bull; Helps train Sleep Lab Tech I trainees when required &bull; Maintains all equipment properly &bull; Communicates with physician and customers in a knowledgeable, professional and courteous manner; performs all other related task as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications

Experience: 2 years Polysomnography experience with at least 1 year of scoring.
Education : High School Diploma or Equivalent
Licensure : Polysomnography Registration RPSGT from BRPT or RST credential from the AASM.

Work Requirements
Must be able to move/transport patients via wheelchair to sleep lab &bull; 80 to 90% of the time the tech is sitting in control room, recording Patent observations and monitoring computer data &bull; 10 to 20% of the time is spent standing, bending and/or reaching while preparing patient.

The Sleep Lab Technician is responsible for conducting comprehensive evaluations and treatments of sleep disorders, which may include polysomnography, diagnostic and therapeutic services, or patient care and education. The Sleep Lab Technician works under general supervision and provides essential support to the Sleep Lab team, ensuring quality patient care and accurate data collection. 
 
Essential Functions<ul><li>
Collects, analyzes, and integrates patient data to determine specific testing parameters, working closely with the ordering physician or clinical director.</li>
<li>Prepares, calibrates, and adjusts sleep lab equipment as necessary to ensure proper functioning.</li>
<li>Applies electrodes and sensors per accepted standards, performs physiological calibrations, and conducts PAP mask fitting.</li>
<li>Conducts various tests following procedural protocols, such as Multiple Sleep Latency Test (MSLT), Maintenance of Wakefulness Test (MWT), and oxygen titration, ensuring accurate data collection.</li>
<li>Monitors the quality of polysomnographic data acquisition, identifying and resolving artifacts to maintain signal integrity.</li>
<li>Documents sleep stages, clinical events, and significant occurrences during procedures to support scoring and interpretation.</li>
<li>Implements patient-specific therapeutic interventions, including PAP, bi-level PAP, and oxygen administration as appropriate.</li>
<li>Scores sleep stages and clinical events according to professional guidelines, generating accurate reports for physician review.</li>
<li>Provides age-specific care in the treatment, assessment, and education of a diverse patient population.</li><li>

<div>PURPOSE OF THIS POSITION
The Polysomnographic Intern works under the general supervision of the Sleep Center Medical Director in operating sophisticated medical diagnostic equipment to record/wake physiology. The attendant develops competency in and performs basic sleep testing procedures and associated interventions. Professional duties include: Obtaining intake data, instrumenting the patient for testing, observing and documenting the patient&rsquo;s sleep behavior, operating and troubleshooting the sleep diagnostic equipment and providing therapeutic intervention when indicated to include Oxygen Therapy, Basic Airway Management, setup and applying nocturnal fixed PAP system and titrate, Non-Invasive Blood Gas Monitoring, CPR, and patient education and monitoring response. Assist with polysomnographic scoring and generation of accurate reports.
JOB DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES
Duty 1: Verifies orders and reviews charts for pertinent data about medical history and sleep/wake complaints. Completes all necessary paperwork for each study including thorough documentation of all patient observations, interactions, and responses to therapy for effective delivery of care.
Duty 2: Prepares patients for studies by educating on purpose and procedure and accurately applying electrodes/sensors per policy and procedures.
Duty 3: Completes set up, calibrates, and troubleshoots all monitoring equipment and reports any malfunctioning equipment to maintain quality tracing to have artifact-free signals.
Duty 4: Follows pre and post test procedures. Recognizes and responds appropriately to patient medical problems and physiological events. Notifies medical director of any patient events that would assist physician in making a diagnosis.
Duty 5: Follows policy and procedures for PAP and oxygen administration including proper interface fitting, patient demonstration, and titration.
Duty 6: Removes, cleans and stores patient care equipment according to infection control and department policy and procedures.
Duty 7: Knows how to respond to emergency medical situations per policy and other circumstances as listed in Safety Manual Guidelines. Insures emergency equipment is functioning and available.
Duty 8: Appropriately handles hazardous materials in accordance with OSHA guidelines to ensure a safe environment according to policy.
Duty 9: Accurately scores studies verified by QA.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS<ul>

Ability to complete a one month on-the-job training period with facility with display of growing knowledge in the field.</li>

The polysomnographic technologist is subject to stressful clinical situations and professional relationships. The technologist is in contact with patients on a daily basis and may be exposed to infectious diseases. The equipment and disinfecting agents used by the technologist may pose environmental hazards. Lifting or moving equipment and patients may result in muscular strain. The technologist works in a clean, well-lighted, heated, and ventilated health care facility. The individual is generally required to sit and carefully monitor polysomnograms and patients for several continuous hours.
