This position is for a <b>Postdoctoral Fellow</b> to engage in biomedical studies that apply Artificial Intelligence (AI) approaches and methods with the long-term objective of improving clinical cancer care. The training, project development, and application will be mentored by Dr. Peter Nelson and Dr. Jeff Leek, and members of their research groups. The projects will integrate high dimensional clinical data with outcomes to specific therapeutics to generate &lsquo;patient similars&rsquo; or &lsquo;digital twins&rsquo;. The studies will also develop methodology to produce synthetic control cohorts for comparative assessments against novel therapeutics evaluated in clinical trials. The project will interface with clinical and laboratory investigators involved in the management of prostate cancer, and researchers developing bioinformatics methods that exploit AI technologies in the Fred Hutch Data Science Lab.</div><div></div><div><br>
The Fred Hutch Data Science Lab is involved in large, education focused initiatives and biomedical research funded by NIH grants. These projects involve delivering training materials to researchers to help catalyze their work in a scalable manner, as well as innovating new methods for understanding or treating disease.</div><div></div><div><br>
Our key projects include:</div><ul><li>
Primary research using Artificial Intelligence (AI) and bioinformatics and biostatistical methods to better personalize treatment of cancer patients from deep and diverse types of biomedical information.</li><li>
Analysis of large‑scale clinical, genomic, and molecular datasets.</li><li>
Development and evaluation of predictive models and statistical approaches to understand treatment outcomes.</li><li>
Integration of diverse data types to identify features associated with therapeutic response, resistance, or toxicity.</li><li>
Collaboration with multidisciplinary teams to interpret findings and support translational applications.</li></ul>
Responsibilities:

Specifically, the postdoc will have the following duties:</div><ul><li>
Developing new statistical models leveraging public and investigator collected biomedical data relating to the diagnosis and treatment of patients with cancer.</li><li>
Writing new R packages or Shiny Apps for implementation of developed methodology.</li><li>
Applying AI and machine learning (ML) tools (including Python, R, and possibly other languages) to test and evaluate biomedical hypotheses.</li><li>
Developing benchmarks and working together with staff to evaluate algorithms on those benchmarks.</li><li>
Contributing to writing papers and review of the current literature.</li><li>
Other duties as assigned.</li></ul>
Qualifications:

A PhD in biomedical sciences, epidemiology, biostatistics, statistics, computer science, machine learning, or another related statistical or computational discipline</li><li>

Our projects try to understand the needs for, develop deployable systems, and study the impact of AI-powered training environments designed to enhance psychosocial skills in real-world settings:</p>
<ul><li> Mental health and well-being: Collaborating with large-scale online support platforms (e.g., 7Cups), we are developing prototypes that use LLM and conversational agents to deliver scalable, experiential micro-skills training (such as empathy, active listening, and feedback) for mental health providers. Our goal is to improve access, efficacy, and personalization in mental health and support interventions.</li></ul>
<ul><li> Customer support and workplace training: Partnering with industry leaders (e.g., Teleperformance), we design simulation-based conversational training for customer service representatives and their supervisors. These environments help train staff in complex social scenarios, stress management, and de-escalation skills, using realistic virtual agents and personalized feedback.</li></ul>
<p>
The postdoctoral researcher will use a user-centered, iterative design approach, co-developing with frontline practitioners and conducting robust evaluations, such as mixed-method analyses and field trials, to assess the impact of end-to-end prototypes on skills acquisition, workplace outcomes, and client wellbeing.</p></div>

<ul><li><h2 class="jobSectionHeader"><b>Doctoral Degree or M.D.</b></h2>
</li><li><h2 class="jobSectionHeader"><b>0-1 year of postdoctoral research experience in academic or industrial lab setting, and/or teaching assistantship in a university setting, and/or residency, and/or clinical duties beyond that of the qualifying doctoral degree.</b></h2>

The Mass General Brigham (MGB) Center for Health Outcomes and Interdisciplinary Research (CHOIR) has served as a hub for interdisciplinary research with a focus on behavioral intervention development and testing since 2021. CHOIR has been quite successful in securing federal funding and is led by Dr. Ana-Maria Vranceanu, a clinical psychologist. Many of the current funded projects focus on critical care, caregiving, aging, and chronic pain. In addition to a large research portfolio, CHOIR houses an APA-approved predoctoral internship program (3 interns), an NIA-funded T32 fellowship, and an NIA Resource Center for Minority Aging Research, as well as a site for local predoctoral practicum students in clinical psychology. The environment is highly supportive of early career faculty, including a &ldquo;K club&rdquo; for investigators who are in various stages of developing or executing career development projects, and a weekly research seminar with MGH based and national investigators from various disciplines interested in interdisciplinary collaborations.</p><p>
CHOIR is seeking a full-time Postdoctoral Research Fellow to join our team. The fellow will work under the primary mentorship of Dr. Alexander Presciutti and contribute to a growing critical care survivorship team within CHOIR. The fellow will primarily serve as an interventionist on an NIA R01-funded trial comparing the efficacy of two telehealth-delivered interventions for emotional distress in family caregivers of patients with coma (severe acute brain injury). The fellow will also deliver behavioral interventions for emotional distress in cardiac arrest survivors and their family caregivers. This is an exciting opportunity to gain applied experience in clinical research focused on critical care survivorship, caregiver interventions, and dyadic interventions. Clinical psychology trainees will have ample opportunities for supervised clinical services to gain licensure.</p><p>
