About the Role
As a Product Data Scientist at Clair, you&rsquo;ll own the experimentation and analytics layer that drives our product and underwriting decisions. You&rsquo;ll play a critical role in shaping how we balance growth, risk, and user experience by designing experiments, defining success metrics, and translating data into actionable product strategy.
This role sits at the intersection of product, finance, and risk. You&rsquo;ll act as the central owner of all A/B testing at Clair &mdash; from underwriting experiments (e.g., advance limits, accrual velocity) to product surface testing that impacts user behavior and downstream credit outcomes. Beyond experimentation, you&rsquo;ll define how we measure success, build forecasting frameworks, and ensure that product decisions are grounded in strong unit economics.
We&rsquo;re looking for someone with strong business intuition, deep expertise in experimentation and statistics, and the ability to translate complex data into clear strategic recommendations. This is less about building machine learning models and more about driving decision-making through rigorous analysis, experimentation, and cross-functional influence.
Key Responsibilities<ul><li>
Own and manage Clair&rsquo;s experimentation ecosystem, including the design, execution, and analysis of A/B tests across underwriting and product experiences.</li><li>
Translate model outputs (e.g., risk scores) into actionable business decisions, such as approval thresholds and lending strategies.</li><li>
Serve as the single source of truth for all experiments, ensuring consistency, rigor, and proper interpretation of results across the organization.</li><li>
Design experiments that evaluate key levers such as credit limits, accrual mechanisms, and pricing, and quantify their impact on both growth and risk metrics.</li><li>
Define and standardize core product and financial metrics, including how we measure model impact, user behavior, and unit economics.</li><li>
Partner closely with Product, Finance, Risk, and Engineering teams to align on strategy, evaluate trade-offs, and inform decision-making.</li><li>

Minimum Qualifications</h2><ul><li>
5+ years of experience in data science, product analytics, or a related analytical role.</li><li>
Strong foundation in statistics and experimental design, including A/B testing, causal inference, and hypothesis testing.</li><li>
Proven experience owning end-to-end experimentation programs and influencing product decisions through data.</li><li>
Strong SQL skills and experience working with large datasets.</li><li>
Demonstrated ability to translate complex analyses into clear business insights and recommendations.</li><li>
Experience working cross-functionally with Product, Finance, or Strategy teams in a fast-paced environment.</li><li>

Additional Details
Location: This is a hybrid position based out in New York City, you will be expected to come into the office at least three days a week (Tuesdays, Wednesdays, &amp; Thursdays) with additional days on occasion for client meetings.
Compensation: The annual base salary for this role is $184,000. The base pay for this role is determined using many factors, such as education, skills and experience and is reflective of Clair Series stage and size. Base pay is only one part of Clair&rsquo;s competitive total compensation package which includes equity, benefits and additional perks. The base pay range is subject to change and may be modified in the future.

About the Role

We're seeking an Applied Scientist who excels at building sophisticated machine learning systems for content presentation and discovery. The ideal candidate brings deep expertise in: 
 
<ul><li>Multi-modal embeddings for rich metadata representation, enabling nuanced understanding of content attributes and customer preferences</li><li>Contextualized ranking systems that adapt to customer intent, viewing context, and real-time signals</li><li>Reinforcement learning frameworks that create continuous improvement loops, allowing our systems to learn and optimize from customer interactions over time</li><li>General modeling techniques with strong fundamentals in machine learning and statistical methods</li><li>Recommender systems experience, with proven ability to build and scale personalization solutions</li></ul>

Key job responsibilities 
As an Applied Scientist, you will have access to large datasets with billions of images and video to build large-scale machine learning systems. Additionally, you will analyze and model terabytes of text, images, and other types of data to solve real-world problems and translate business and functional requirements into quick prototypes or proofs of concept. 
We are looking for smart scientists capable of using a variety of domain expertise combined with machine learning and statistical techniques to invent, design, evangelize, and implement state-of-the-art solutions for never-before-solved problems.</div><h2 class="jobSectionHeader">
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS</h2><ul><li>3+ years of building models for business application experience</li><li>PhD, or Master's degree and 4+ years of CS, CE, ML or related field experience</li><li>Experience programming in Java, C++, Python or related language</li><li>Experience in any of the following areas: algorithms and data structures, parsing, numerical optimization, data mining, parallel and distributed computing, high-performance computing</li></ul><h2 class="jobSectionHeader">

The base salary range for this position is listed below. Your Amazon package will include sign-on payments and restricted stock units (RSUs). Final compensation will be determined based on factors including experience, qualifications, and location.
