Boston College Libraries are seeking <b>one temporary full-time archivist</b>, to arrange and<br>
describe digital files from a digital collection of the archdiocesan papers of Saint &Oacute;scar Romero.<br>
Romero was assassinated on March 24, 1980 while Archbishop of San Salvador and<br>
named a modern martyr by the Catholic Church. The collection is a digitized version of the<br>
microfilmed papers that the Archdiocese of San Salvador has authorized Boston College to<br>
appraise and host in an open-access database. The archivist will prepare and implement a processing plan, for arranging and describing the digital materials (with both hierarchical descriptions and item-level metadata, in Spanish and<br>
English), and for assisting with a thorough review of the files to help determine which to include in the database. The archivist will also advise on other aspects of the Project as appropriate, including the evaluation of content and interfaces for public online access to the Project materials. The archivist may also supervise part-time student assistants who will support various aspects of the Project. The archivist will report to the Associate Director of Academic Programs and Special Projects, who is supervising the Project<br>

This position will anticipate and respond to the evolving needs of existing and future archival materials by developing and implementing workflow practices for appraisal, donation guidelines, processing standards, descriptive practices, preservation/conservation, deaccession and disposition. The role works within budgets established for archival and preservation work and supplies in consultation with the Special Collections Services Manager. The position is responsible for performing processing work and documenting the progress of that work, including archival collection statistics. This role will also serve as a representative for emergency response for historical and cultural materials as defined by the system and through mutual aid agreements.</p><p>
As a member of the Library Experience and Engagement Division, this position will be based at the Central Library and will report to the Special Collections Services Manager as part of the highly collaborative Special Collections team. The Archivist will steward archival collections through thoughtful selection, evaluation, accession, and preservation of donated or purchased archival materials in accordance with best practices for professional archives. This position will evaluate physical, digitized and born-digital materials prior to donation, then accession, process, and maintain materials (including digital preservation and format migration) added to the Special Collections.</p><p>
The position serves in an advisory capacity as the primary subject-matter expert on Seattle Public Library&rsquo;s Archival Collections and on archival processes and best practices &mdash; including accessioning, and description &mdash; throughout the system. The Archivist liaises with other archival institutions and special collections on records retention and transfer and the preservation, care, and disposition of materials. The role also works with Information Technology on digital collections asset preservation issues as a subject-matter expert on digital preservation best practices, workflows, and tools including but not limited to data security analysis (antivirus, etc.), file parity verification, and any other necessary data forensics.</p><p>
Duties may include engagement with the staff of The Seattle Public Library Foundation and Friends of the Seattle Public Library on efforts to support Special Collections. The position also collaborates with Collection Curators and the Digital Collections Librarian to research and describe collection materials and prepare selected items for digitization.</p></div><p></p>
