Mental Health Support Services (MHSS) is the provider of mental health, developmental disabilities, and substance use disorder services for children and adults in Chesterfield County. We are currently seeking a Residential Counselor to provide direct assistance, support/supportive counseling and skills training to individuals with intellectual disabilities, autism, co-occurring mental illness, and/or physical disabilities in a residential facility. Our Residential Counselors are dedicated and compassionate and work in group homes, supported living, in-home, homes of families, and other settings.<br>

<b>Minimum Qualifications</b>:<br>
Bachelor's degree in a human services field such as psychology, sociology, rehabilitation counseling, or a related field; one year of experience in working with individuals with intellectual disabilities; or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Two years of related experience working with individuals with developmental disabilities preferred. Medication Administration certification preferred. Experience using an electronic health record preferred.<br>

<b>Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities</b>:<br>
Working knowledge of the nature of intellectual disabilities and the role of residential support services. Ability to supervise and provide direct care to consumers in a residential setting; to develop and implement individualized service plans; to communicate effectively orally and in writing; to operate a personal computer and related software and other standard office equipment; to develop and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external customers. Ability to write detailed and comprehensive progress notes preferred; working knowledge of person-centered principles preferred. Time management skills preferred.<br>

<b>Current valid driver&rsquo;s license and good driving record required. Based on the Virginia DMV point system, record must not reflect a total of six or more demerit points within the preceding twenty-four months, or one major violation of six demerit points with the preceding thirty-six months. Out of state driving records must be obtained by applicant and presented at time of interview. Records must reflect at least three years of history and be dated within thirty days of interview date.</b></p><p><b>

<div>The Residential Support Specialist (RSS) provides direct care, structure, and supervision to residents within the ASAM Level 3.1 Clinically Managed Low-Intensity Residential Program, as defined by the Virginia Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Services (DBHDS). This role ensures a safe, therapeutic, and recovery-oriented environment consistent with DBHDS 3.1 staffing and program criteria, which require 24-hour onsite allied health staff presence and 24/7 physician consultation availability.<br>
</div><div>The RSS supports residents in achieving treatment goals by maintaining safety, modeling recovery principles, documenting progress, and fostering personal responsibility, emotional growth, and independence.<br>
</div><div><b>Key Responsibilities</b></div>
<ul><li>Provide <b>24-hour milieu supervision</b>, ensuring resident safety, accountability, and adherence to DBHDS and ALIGN Community &amp; Treatment Services (ACTS) program standards.</li>
<li>Conduct scheduled <b>wellness, safety, and room checks</b> in compliance with Level 3.1 staffing expectations.</li>
<li>Support residents&rsquo; daily routines, including life skills development, hygiene, meal preparation, community integration, and social interaction.</li>
<li>Assist residents in following individualized treatment and recovery plans, encouraging engagement in groups, therapy sessions, and recovery-related activities.</li>
