Reporting to the Chief Clinical Quality and Safety Officer, this role focuses on translating enterprise clinical safety strategy into effective programs, practices, and measurable outcomes.
The Director is accountable for designing, implementing, and continuously strengthening a comprehensive clinical safety framework that proactively identifies risk, mitigates harm, and supports safe, reliable care. Key Responsibilities
<ul><li>Clinical Safety Program Execution<ul><li>

Lead or provide expert oversight for root cause analyses, failure mode and effects analyses, and other structured reviews to identify system vulnerabilities and prevent recurrence.</li><li>
Ensure corrective and preventive actions are clearly defined, implemented, and monitored for effectiveness.</li><li>
Collaborate closely with legal, compliance, and fraud, waste, and abuse (FWA) teams to support appropriate documentation, internal review, and external reporting of safety-related events.</li></ul></li><li>
Measurement, Monitoring, and Reporting<ul><li>
Define and manage clinical safety performance indicators, including adverse events, serious safety events, and near-miss trends.</li><li>

Analyze safety data to identify patterns, emerging risks, and opportunities for system-level improvement.</li><li>
Prepare and deliver clinical safety updates, analyses, and recommendations to leadership and governance forums, as appropriate.</li></ul></li><li>
Clinical Safety Initiatives and Harm Reduction<ul><li>
Lead the execution of organization-wide initiatives focused on reducing preventable patient harm, including medication safety, infection prevention and control, and diagnostic or care transition safety.</li><li>
Support the adoption of evidence-informed safety practices and standardized approaches across clinical programs and markets.</li><li>
Partner with clinical informatics and technology teams to ensure systems effectively support safety reporting, monitoring, and improvement.</li><li>
Evaluate the effectiveness of safety interventions and refine approaches based on outcomes, data, and operational feedback.</li></ul></li><li>
Culture, Education, and Engagement<ul><li>
Support the advancement of high-reliability practices by reinforcing principles of safety science, human factors, and systems-based thinking.</li><li>
Contribute to education and engagement efforts that equip clinicians and care teams with practical safety tools and knowledge.</li><li>
Encourage multidisciplinary collaboration, open communication, and shared accountability for safety outcomes.</li><li>
Act as a trusted advisor on clinical safety topics across the organization.</li></ul></li></ul>
Qualifications:
<ul><li>Clinical safety background with 5+ years of relevant experience.</li><li>
Clinical background (e.g., RN, PharmD) and patient safety certification (e.g., CPPS, CPHQ) preferred.</li><li>
Demonstrated experience in patient safety, quality, or clinical risk management, including responsibility for leading programs or initiatives at scale.</li><li>
Experience designing, implementing, or transforming a clinical or patient safety program, or overseeing an established program, to manage the full lifecycle of safety events (e.g., event reporting, triage, investigation, prioritization, mitigation, and tracking).</li><li>
Direct experience leading structured safety investigations (e.g., Root Cause Analysis, Common Cause Analysis, Apparent Cause Analysis) and proactive risk assessments (e.g., FMEA).</li><li>
Deep expertise in performance improvement methodologies and systems-based approaches to care delivery.</li><li>
Demonstrated ability to operate autonomously within a defined strategic framework, exercising sound clinical judgment and the ability to lead through influence in a matrixed environment, coaching and partnering with leaders outside of direct reporting relationships.</li><li>
Experience managing and developing safety, quality, or clinical risk management professionals (e.g., safety specialists, analysts).</li><li>
Strong analytical skills with experience using safety data to identify trends, prioritize risk, and drive system-level improvements.</li><li>
Strong communication, collaboration, and change management skills.</li></ul>

</li></ul>Measureable Reduction in Avoidable Harm Expectations:<ul><li>Oversee the management and use of event information to benchmark and track progress to zero avoidable harm.</li><li>Provide analysis and identifying trends from reports (e.g. event reports, SHARP report, Service Line Dashboards) to track progress of improvement strategies. What qualifications you will need:</h6>
LICENSURE/CERTIFICATION/REGISTRATION: &bull; Certification in Patient Safety (CPPS) required; If not already CPPS, must obtain certification within 12 months of hire. o Maintain CPPS while in role &bull; BERT (Behavioral Emergency Response Training) required within 6 months of hire.
EDUCATION : &bull; Bachelor&rsquo;s Degree in Healthcare related field required. Master&rsquo;s Degree preferred.
EXPERIENCE: &bull; Registered Nurse preferred. &bull; Three to five years healthcare experience in patient safety, risk, and/or quality preferred. Healthcare experience should be recent and within a clinical setting such as Hospital, Ambulatory Surgery Center, etc.

DESCRIPTION:
This position leads and is accountable for the overall operations of the Safety, Security, and Emergency Preparedness (SSEP) Department, including security staff, campus access control, monitoring of fire and security alarm systems, and administration and enforcement of parking regulations. The Director ensures institutional compliance with applicable federal, state, and local regulations and establishes and monitors adherence to college safety and security policies and procedures.
The Director partners with the campus community to promote a culture of safety through training, outreach, and coordinated response efforts. This position provides leadership and operational oversight in collaboration with the Assistant Director of Emergency Preparedness, Health and Safety to support the development and implementation of the college's all-hazards emergency preparedness and business continuity plans. Minimum of five (5) years of progressive leadership and managerial experience in security operations, emergency management, or related public safety functions.</li><li>
Demonstrated ability to lead teams, manage complex operations, and effectively coordinate across organizational and external stakeholders.</li><li>

PHYSICAL WORK ENVIRONMENT:
The college is located on a 50-acre main campus with additional satellite locations throughout Snohomish County. Work is performed in a variety of environments, including office settings, on foot across campus, and in a vehicle while traveling between sites.
This position requires regular use of a telephone, personal computer, and related electronic systems, including word processing, spreadsheets, and database applications. Work is also performed throughout campus facilities, both indoors and outdoors, and may involve exposure to varying weather, atmospheric, and environmental conditions. The role may include work in confined spaces and participation in emergency response situations as needed.
COMPENSATION:<div>
Salary is $105,118.44 - $ 117,566.68 and is based on the Edmonds College administrative/exempt salary schedule, plus a State Board of Community and Technical Colleges benefits package, which includes tuition waivers for college classes, medical, dental, retirement options and more. Vacation and leave package includes 12 sick days per year, 11 scheduled holidays, 1 personal holiday, and 24 vacation leave days per year.</div> 
WORK SCHEDULE:<div>
Safety, Security, and Emergency Preparedness is a 24/7 operation. The Director is expected to work a minimum of 40 hours per week and serve in an on-call capacity to respond to emergencies and other organizational needs. This position requires availability outside of standard business hours, including nights, weekends, and holidays, as operational needs require.</div>

</h6>What qualifications you will need:
EDUCATION :<ul><li>
Bachelor&rsquo;s Degree in Nursing required. Master&rsquo;s Degree preferred.</li></ul>

Certification in Patient Safety (CPPS) required; If not already CPPS, must obtain certification within 12 months of hire.</li><li>
