What you&rsquo;ll be doing
This role sits at the heart of the bank&rsquo;s cloud modernisation, working within a large‑scale Google Cloud Platform environment that underpins digital journeys, data capabilities and emerging Generative AI workloads. As a Senior Infrastructure Engineer, you&rsquo;ll help shape the cloud foundations that enable the organisation to operate securely, scale efficiently and innovate responsibly. Your work will directly influence how cloud infrastructure evolves across the bank, with the opportunity to contribute to platform direction, engineering standards and the broader adoption of modern cloud practices.
You&rsquo;ll design, build and optimise GCP infrastructure using a wide range of cloud services, alongside delivering Infrastructure‑as‑Code through Terraform and modular design patterns. The role involves developing automation using tools such as Python, Bash or Groovy, and working with structured data formats including JSON and YAML. You&rsquo;ll also play a key role in evolving the CI/CD ecosystem across technologies such as Jenkins, Harness and GitHub, while working with Kubernetes (GKE) and modern deployment approaches to support scalable, resilient platforms.
Collaboration is central to the role. You&rsquo;ll work closely with Infrastructure, Systems, Architecture and Software Engineering teams to deliver secure, automated and high‑quality cloud solutions within strong control, compliance and security frameworks. You&rsquo;ll contribute to engineering quality through code reviews, design input and full lifecycle ownership, while also helping to guide and support more junior team members.
In addition, you&rsquo;ll be part of a wider operational model, including participation in an on‑call support rota and occasional out‑of‑hours work, ensuring the reliability and performance of critical cloud services that support the bank&rsquo;s core operations.

What we&rsquo;re looking for?

The Senior Data Engineer will be a key player and implementer in this mission. Your Role in a Nutshell Lead the production of user-centred data software based on business requirements and best practice. Work collaboratively with colleagues to explore, design and deliver innovative solutions to complex client problems. Maintain and grow client relationships, troubleshooting complex issues through collaboration. Design and manage software development and deployment pipelines, resolving potential bottlenecks before they occur. Communicate and present prototypes, solutions, and progress to internal and external stakeholders in a clear, concise manner. Build great relationships with your team and stakeholders, ensuring that systemic challenges are overcome. Mentoring and coaching other engineers to support their professional development. Promote Hippo&rsquo;s Data Herd internally and externally through blogs, case studies, and workshops. Skills and experience that you need Essential Experience Excellent experience delivering in Python and experience with at least one other core language. Strong expertise in SQL and relational databases. Solid experience with Cloud providers such as AWS, Azure or GCP. Solid experience working with Snowflake and dbt. Strong experience working with different data formats, e.g., CSV, JSON and XML. Expert knowledge in building reliable and scalable Data Pipelines. Deep experience working in an Agile Environment. Proficiency in Test-Driven Development (TDD) or Behaviour Driven Development (BDD). Strong experience with Continuous Integration and Continuous Deployment (CI/CD). Experience mentoring and coaching others on technical best practices. Desirable Experience Previous experience of working on GOV/NHS projects or in a consultancy environment.
