The holder of this position will be a senior attorney handling a wide range of civil litigation matters on behalf of City-County agencies, with a focus on more complex or high-stakes matters that require significant professional experience and/or subject-matter expertise. The primary responsibility of a senior litigation attorney is to represent the City-County and related agencies in civil litigation matters in state and federal court. The City-County is involved in a diverse array of litigation matters, including federal civil rights suits, tort claims, contract disputes, prisoner litigation, appeals at the state and federal level, and administrative and regulatory matters. Senior litigation attorneys handle all facets of complex civil litigation. On many cases, the holder of this position will assume the role of the primary attorney. This role representing our public agency clients includes preparing complaints, answers, and other pleadings; researching and filing motions and briefs; handling discovery and depositions; judicial hearings; settlement negotiations; and trial advocacy. Front-line litigation attorneys benefit from the assistance of more experience co-counsel and supervisors in many cases, but should expect to have immediate responsibility for handling a diverse, challenging caseload. As a senior litigation attorney, this position holder will take responsibility for lawsuits that are highly sensitive in nature, involve significant potential financial liability, implicate complex legal issues, or involve complicated discovery and case management challenges. On other matters, the senior litigation attorney will play a &ldquo;second chair&rdquo; role, handling some aspects of a case while another attorney occupies the lead role. In such cases, the senior attorney&rsquo;s role may be to provide high level guidance to a more junior attorney who is handling the day-to-day aspects of a case. This high-level guidance includes strategic direction, client communications, review of the junior attorney&rsquo;s work, and communications with opposing counsel. In some other cases, the senior attorney may assist another senior attorney in handling certain discrete aspects of the case, in-depth legal research of issues presented by a case, communicating with client agencies and employees as part of the discovery process, assisting in the drafting of pleadings, briefs, and other court filings, and other essentials of diligent case management. As a senior litigation attorney, the position holder will have opportunities to carve out areas of expertise and specialization, but will still handle a diverse caseload. This is a senior, execution-focused role for a lawyer who wants to practice law with depth, focus, and excellence (including case strategy, advocacy, and client consultations) without being pulled into operational distractions. 
In this role, you will:<ul><li>
Appear in immigration court</li><li>
Handle occasional non-routine advocacy, including federal court matters or in-person appearances before immigration agencies, if needed</li><li>
Draft motions, briefs, and complex legal filings</li><li>
Develop legal strategy and make case-specific recommendations</li><li>
Manage a caseload from strategy through execution</li><li>
Ensure all filings, deadlines, and court requirements are met</li><li>
Review legal work product for quality and accuracy</li><li>
Collaborate with paralegals and staff to move cases forward efficiently</li><li>
Support the development of junior staff as the team grows</li></ul>

We are looking for a strong legal mind: an experienced immigration attorney who takes ownership of their work, operates with rigor and accountability, and wants to grow with a firm that is building something long-term. 
Compensation:
$130,000 - $150,000 yearly 
Responsibilities:
Types of Cases You&rsquo;ll Work On (in order of volume):<ul><li>
Asylum, Humanitarian relief (VAWA, U visas, Deferred Action, Military PIP), Removal Defense, Family Petitions, Consular Processing, Waivers, NIW, DACA, TPS, EB2, E2, and H-1B. This mix may evolve as the firm grows. We actively invest in training and professional development to support expansion into new case types.</li></ul> 
Legal Drafting &amp; Advocacy<ul><li>
Analyze cases and develop legal strategies to serve clients&rsquo; objectives</li><li>
Conduct legal research and draft correspondence, pleadings, motions, and briefs</li><li>
Represent clients in court to argue motions during legal proceedings</li><li>
Take full ownership of case outcomes, ensuring matters are handled strategically and brought to a resolution</li></ul> 
Court Representation<ul><li>
Represent clients in immigration court (remotely or in person, as required) for master and individual hearings (Asylum and COR cases only)</li><li>
Must be willing and able to travel when needed</li><li>
Serve as primary counsel of record in EOIR matters, with the firm maintaining continuity of representation as needed</li></ul> 
Legal Development and Strategy<ul><li>
Identify legal risks and case vulnerabilities early and develop strategies to address them proactively</li><li>
Monitor immigration law developments, policy changes, and practice advisories</li><li>
Incorporate updates into firm procedures, templates, and case strategies</li></ul> 
Collaboration &amp; Case Execution<ul><li>
Maintain accurate and timely records of all work performed, including time tracking and detailed case notes in the firm&rsquo;s case management system.</li><li>
Work closely with the Case Manager and the administrative team to ensure cases move efficiently</li><li>
Identify workflow issues and propose process improvements</li><li>
Participate in team meetings to align priorities and production goals</li><li>
Effectively leverage and delegate to support staff to prioritize high-value legal work, including strategy, advocacy, and consultations</li></ul> 
Client Communication &amp; Representation<ul><li>
Conduct legal consultations and evaluate the viability of potential cases, providing clear recommendations to the intake team</li><li>
Provide clear next steps following consultations to support case conversion and onboarding</li><li>
Engage directly with clients on legal strategy, critical decisions, and case resolution, while support teams manage routine communication and updates</li><li>
Handle high-level inquiries or escalations requiring attorney involvement</li><li>
Maintain professional and ethical client relationships consistent with firm standards</li></ul> 

Qualifications:<ul><li>
7+ years of immigration law experience</li><li>
Demonstrated experience handling asylum, humanitarian relief (VAWA, U visas, Military PIP), and removal defense cases, including cancellation of removal</li><li>
Strong working knowledge of family-based petitions, consular processing, and waivers, along with select employment-based matters (including NIW, E-2, and H-1B)</li><li>
Proven ability to manage cases independently from legal strategy through final resolution</li><li>
Excellent legal writing skills, with the ability to draft persuasive motions and briefs beyond standard templates</li><li>
Strong judgment, accountability, and attention to detail in managing an active caseload</li><li>
Comfortable working within a structured, team-based environment, where support staff handle day-to-day communication and administrative functions</li><li>
Willingness to appear in court (remote or in person) and travel as needed</li><li>
Spanish fluency preferred, but not required</li></ul>
