Position Summary 
Under general supervision performs skilled activities that may include operating and maintaining heavy equipment at solid waste management facilities, may include accepting and processing Household Hazardous Wastes (HHW) and may include direct customer service interactions. Incumbent may operate such equipment as Roll Off Trucks, Backhoes, Skid Steers, forklifts, powered carts, and similar equipment. Incumbent may also complete routine equipment inspections, fueling and preventive maintenance requirements;
This position will also require the knowledge of acceptable and nonacceptable waste types and familiarity with NC DEQ waste standards. This position will be working 
outdoors and may perform manual labor. The incumbent shall adhere to safety procedures at acceptance centers or landfill facilities to process Municipal Solid Waste, Household Hazardous Waste, Construction Demolition Debris, Yard Waste debris and Recyclable Materials. 
Essential Functions 
May operate large heavy equipment in the collection and disposal of recyclables, garbage, trash, 
and/or refuse 
Perform minor maintenance and related care of heavy equipment used in daily refuse processing 
Keep the work area clean and free of debris to prevent damage to incoming vehicles 
Assist with directing customers at solid waste centers or landfill 
Assist with cleaning and maintenance of trucks and tools 
Engage in safe working practices and comply with safety programs and guidelines 
Prepare daily Pre/Post trip inspections, fill out daily fuel logs 
May provide direction to temporary labor or community service workers engaged in general 
grounds keeping such as picking up trash and debris 
Report and monitor unsafe working conditions 
Monitor the safety of co-workers 
May operate solid waste vehicles that require a CDL 
May perform vehicle load inspections and monitor incoming loads for unacceptable materials 
May process HHW by separating items by material characteristics, ensuring that DOT labels are 
correctly made according to shipping requirements. 
Minimum Qualifications 
Experience: 
Minimum of four years of directly related experience

A CDL is required for this position. This position will require the incumbent to have experience with Front End Loaders, Roll-Off Trucks, Tractor Trailers and other heavy equipment operation. The incumbent will also be required to operate automatic and manual transmission equipment.

wheel loader vehicles. 
Perform complex maintenance and related care of Diesel equipment used in solid waste 
operations

Drive semi-tractor trailers hauling materials and heavy equipment (walking floor trailers and lowboy trailers)

More About the Role: 
This position will work mostly with our facilities development &amp; maintenance team in the Solid Waste Division but may be assigned to any equivalent role within the program depending on need. This role will require basic mechanical and carpentry skills, with a focus on heavy equipment operation of backhoes, hydraulic excavators, and similar equipment. This position does require at minimum, a Class B CDL. The incumbent may operate a variety of heavy equipment such as excavators, wheel loaders, bulldozers, mini excavators, dump trucks, scissor lifts, telehandlers, forklifts, as well as ride on rollers and walk behind tamps/rollers. The incumbent must have a basic understanding of grading and earth work as well as the ability to shoot, grade, and operate a laser at level efficiency. Duties will also include operating a paint sprayer, line stripping sprayer and knowledge of paint types. This role will require some non-typical work hours on an occasional basis and that will include occasional weekends, holiday and inclement weather working hours.

In this role, you will be integral to our waste management operations, ensuring efficient collection and disposal of solid waste while maintaining the cleanliness and safety of our community.GENERAL DESCRIPTIONWork involves heavy manual labor involved in the collection and disposal of refuse, special pick-up items, brush/yard waste and recyclables on a scheduled basis. This may include riding on a refuse collection vehicle, walking to designated disposal areas, emptying containers into truck, using hand and other tools to pick-up general curbside trash and other duties as directed.ESSENTIAL POSITION FUNCTIONS1. Rides on the back of a collection compactor vehicle over a designated route; walks to the waste disposal areas of commercial and residential premises, picking up refuse in containers, bags and piles of yard waste and loading into compactor.2. About the Team

TechSource is seeking a Waste Management Technician to support mission-critical waste management and ESH&amp;Q operations within highly regulated nuclear facilities, ensuring safe, compliant handling, characterization, and disposition of hazardous and radioactive materials in alignment with national security objectives. 


About this Role

The Waste Management Technician performs technical work supporting the handling, inspection, packaging, and storage of hazardous and radioactive waste materials. Technicians ensure waste materials are managed safely and in compliance with established procedures. 


Key Responsibilities
<ul><li>
Handle, package, label, and store hazardous, radioactive, or mixed waste materials.</li><li>
Perform inspections and characterization reviews on waste containers to verify proper handling and storage requirements.</li><li>
Operate mechanical equipment such as forklifts or drum handlers to move and stage waste containers.</li><li>
Assist with waste segregation, repackaging, and container preparation activities.</li><li>
Maintain accurate records for waste profiles, inventory, inspections, and disposal documentation.</li><li>
Conduct visual inspections to identify prohibited materials or compliance issues.</li><li>
Support laboratory or facility operations by transporting waste containers and materials between designated areas.</li><li>
Follow detailed operating procedures and safety protocols for hazardous material handling.</li><li>
Assist with troubleshooting operational issues related to waste handling processes.</li></ul> 


Work Environment

100% onsite at Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) in Los Alamos, NM. The site location is a one-way, approximately 45-minute drive from Santa Fe and approximately 90-minute drive from Albuquerque. 

<ul><li>
Must be willing to work around radioactive materials in compliance with safety protocols.</li><li>
Must be able to obtain and maintain a DOE Q Clearance, which includes successfully passing a federal drug test and federal background check.</li><li>
A High School Diploma, or equivalent is required; an Associate&rsquo;s degree in Environmental Science, Chemistry, Engineering, or related degree is preferred.</li></ul>
