 The SPT I is responsible for general support functions within the Specimen Processing Department. This position requires a data entry background. Functions performed may include but are not limited to A-station, presort, pickup and delivery of processed specimens to the laboratory, imaging/microfilming, centrifugation and aliquoting. All functions must be performed with confidence, accuracy and in a timely manner. Job is complex and requires employees to have good organization skills and is able to learn and understand specimen types related to test(s) ordered by clients. The SPT I must have the ability to learn and understand the compliance regulations related to test ordering which may change daily. This position is critical to quality for customer satisfaction. Additionally, since many changes do occur from day to day, great flexibility on the part of the SPT I is required. The SPT I will be exposed to many different demands made by the customer. Majority of SPT I work on the nightshift but based on staffing needs, weekends, holidays, on call and overtime availability is a requirement.

Provide every patient with Privacy Notice. As needed.

Assist the Specimen Processing Supervisor with developing and maintaining a comprehensive training protocol for new hires and annual assessment in the area of Specimen Receiving. 
</li><li>
Refer specimens to outside laboratories for testing as assigned, including the choice of appropriate laboratory, specimen type, integrity, transport and result reporting. Pull and review pending reports to ensure that tests are reported in the expected time frame. Communicate unscheduled delays in reporting to the clients. Track all referred tests consistently by date and destination, using a manual log, shipping manifest and delivery service shipping requests. File all Reference Lab manifests as appropriate. Research test requirements for miscellaneous Reference Lab orders. Aliquot as appropriate. 
</li><li>
Maintain a working knowledge of referral laboratory equipment, to include troubleshooting printers and fax. Maintain a working knowledge of reference laboratory information systems to support sending and viewing orders, printing specimens&rsquo; barcodes and manifests, and printing results. Refer any problems and/or software glitches to Referral Specialist and/or Supervisor. 
</li><li>
Utilizing automation or manual processes, prepare, centrifuge, and aliquot laboratory specimens accurately for delivery to laboratory sections and to reference laboratories with accompanying paperwork, in accordance with procedures in Laboratory Specimen Processing Manual and Send-Out Manual. Preserve specimen integrity and maintain specimen identification accurately. Ensure priority delivery of STAT specimens to the laboratory sections. Prepare and maintain records and reports on specimen procurement.</li><li>
Receive and process physician orders via laboratory requisitions or Laboratory Information Systems (LIS) for routine, timed, emergency blood tests and studies. Promptly respond to all calls, pages and other requests for services, facilitating timely collection of specimens / performance of phlebotomy procedures on all appropriate floors including Emergency Department and off-site locations as required and provide backup to nursing units as needed. Obtain assistance from appropriate laboratory personnel regarding procedures. 
</li><li>
Receive specimens delivered to laboratory, performing quality assurance (QA) checks to ensure patient safety; QA checks to include identification checks, labeling review for 2 patient identifiers (i.e. Name, Date of Birth, Medical Record number), review of ordered tests. Reconcile Tracking Logs from off-site collection locations. 
</li><li>
Operate equipment and automation in the processing of specimens, exercising care. Perform routine cleaning and preventative maintenance to ensure continued functioning of equipment. Troubleshoot equipment problems, make repairs, and discuss/refer to supervisor as necessary. Keep related records. Maintain work areas in a clean, safe and organized manner 
</li><li>
Respond to Add-On requests, using Add-On order slip, order, locate sample and deliver to the appropriate laboratory section for testing. On Emergency Department (ED) Add-On Requests, research to see what order to put the Add-On request onto, order, locate sample, and deliver to appropriate lab section. 
</li><li>
Archive and retrieve specimens as necessary. 
</li><li>
Participate in problem solving and troubleshooting related to patient, client, and specimen information, as well as procedures and equipment. Collect venous and capillary blood samples for Transfusion Service, Hematology, Chemistry, and Microbiology, from inpatients and outpatients of the patient population served by the hospital upon request or as assigned, performing accurate patient identification, requisition verification, specimen labeling, specimen handling and disposal of contaminated waste and sharps. Greet and acknowledge the patient, identify self and what you will be doing. 
</li><li>
Handle specimens according to proper procedure involving test requirements, special handling of requisition and specimens, and timed tests. 
</li><li>
Verify correct specimen identification and specimen requirements against test requests and serve as resource to clarify specimen sources and accuracy. 
</li><li>
Highlights test requests and other information on the requisitions to ensure correct and complete data entry. 
</li><li>
Recognize discrepancies or problems and notifies appropriate staff members and/or physicians as appropriate. Document problems regarding patient or client information and forwards to the appropriate section. Inform the supervisor of significant problems. 
</li><li>
Respond to the computerized transport system (CTS or pneumatic tube) when carriers arrive into the laboratory, unloading specimens from carriers and facilitating the processing of these specimens in a timely manner; return all carriers via CTS to sending stations. 
</li><li>
Perform phlebotomy for legal alcohol draws and testify in court as required. 
</li><li>
Maintain phlebotomy tray/cart, supplies, equipment and work area in a clean and orderly manner. Ensure appropriate inventory level to perform duties. 
</li><li>

</div></div><ul><li>Perform specimen receiving, labeling, handling and preparation.</li>
<li>Assist with pre-analytical preparation of specimens (e.g., printing labels, uncap/cap specimen tubes, aliquot specimens, prepare racks, worklists, enter/scan specimens and load automated instruments).</li>
<li>Record digital temperature; notify licensed personnel if temperature is out of range.</li>
<li>Perform routine instrument maintenance on some equipment.</li>
<li>Assist in preparation of chemicals, reagents and solutions.</li>
<li>Clean, organize and maintain work area, glassware and laboratory equipment (e.g., refrigerators, freezers and supply cabinets, as needed).</li>
<li>Assist with monitoring the department pending and overdue lists, which includes, searching, locating, following up and filing appropriate documentation.</li>
<li>Perform other departmental tasks such as filing, archiving and retrieving slides/blocks, reports, requisitions/other paperwork and answering the telephone.</li>
<li>Dispose of biohazardous material.</li>
<li>Enter data in laboratory information systems (LIS).</li>
<li>Perform QA/QC duties as assigned.</li>

Required Work Experience:
One (1) year full-time experience in a technical or clinical laboratory department.

Physical and Mental Requirements:

<div>The 2nd Shift Quality Control Technician serves as a key point of contact for end-of-day specimen reconciliation and quality assurance within the laboratory. This role ensures that all samples are accurately processed, verified, and accounted for prior to laboratory closure. The position requires a high level of independence, attention to detail, and strong problem-solving skills during the evening shift.<h3 class="jobSectionHeader">
Key Responsibilities</h3><ul><li>
Demonstrate proficiency in data entry, specimen processing, and quality control functions, including a full understanding of all job duties and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) related to accessioning, preparation, and reconciliation.</li><li>
Receive and accession incoming specimens during the closing shift by completing electronic requisitions, printing barcodes, and entering data into the Laboratory Information System (LIS).</li><li>
Validate specimen information, patient demographics, billing details, and test orders for accuracy; report inconsistencies to laboratory leadership.</li><li>
Identify and resolve specimen-related issues, including missing information, complex test-to-specimen relationships, and compliance concerns.</li><li>
Track and monitor quality control metrics, maintain accurate logs, and collaborate with leadership to ensure high-quality specimen processing and data accuracy.</li><li>
Communicate issues that may impact patient results in a timely manner.</li><li>
Facilitate effective communication between laboratory staff and external stakeholders regarding specimen status, test results, and end-of-day discrepancies.</li><li>
Keep leadership informed of inconsistencies or quality concerns and contribute to performance improvements through SOP development, updates, and quality initiatives.</li><li>
Complete required documentation accurately and within established timeframes; maintain LIS databases to support proper specimen processing and reconciliation.</li><li>
Review requisitions and test orders for completeness and accuracy; validate and verify work completed by other staff as needed.</li><li>
Provide training support and assist with shipment preparation to maintain specimen integrity.</li><li>
Demonstrate knowledge of specimen testing requirements and compliance policies, including use of laboratory systems, translation tables, and directories of services.</li><li>
Adhere to all laboratory policies and procedures, including safety standards, confidentiality requirements (HIPAA), OSHA regulations, and proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE).</li><li>

What you will do<ul><li>
Performs pre analytical and post analytical portions of laboratory tests within scope of practice under Tennessee Medical Laboratory Act.</li>
<li>Prepares specimens received for testing in laboratory areas such as sorting, centrifuging, decapping, separating/aliquoting and archiving.</li>
<li>Operates various types of laboratory equipment such as centrifuges and analyzers to prepare samples in specialized laboratory areas.</li>
<li>Prepares and stains smears on automated stainers.</li>
<li>Verifies accuracy of patient information, test orders, and specimen labeling. Performs required documentation for specimens.</li>
<li>Prepares handling, packing, storage, and shipping of specimens.</li>
<li>Answers telephone inquiries regarding laboratory procedures, test results and reports. Reports critical results and documents Read Back in LIS in a timely manner using correct policy and procedure.</li>
<li>Maintains inventory and stocking of supplies and equipment in the laboratory areas according to established laboratory protocol and procedures.</li>
<li>Follows established procedures for laboratory quality assurance, ensures compliance with regulatory requirements, quality standards, safety, competency, and policies and procedures.</li>
