The Opportunity</b></div><div>
WSDOT is currently seeking an Assistant Traffic Design Engineer to join the Traffic Office in Wenatchee, WA. This position supports the delivery of traffic projects, including signal systems, illumination, Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS), permanent signing, and traffic control plans. The role also assists with traffic operations, including signal timing and capacity analysis. A strong candidate will demonstrate the ability to apply engineering principles to transportation projects, engineering design and project documentation skills, and effective collaboration within multidisciplinary teams, all while maintaining a commitment to safety, professional growth, and public service.</div><div><b><br>
What to Expect</b></div><div>
Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role, the Assistant Traffic Design Engineer will:</div><ul><li>
Develop and review contract plans, specifications, estimates, schedules, and design documentation for traffic signal systems, illumination systems, ITS, and signing.</li><li>
Coordinate with project managers and other teams to ensure all design aspects and timelines are met.</li><li>
Utilize computer software to design and review plans, perform lighting analysis, and prepare specifications, estimates, and schedules.</li><li>
Perform field visits to collect data for existing systems and inspect construction projects as needed.</li><li>
Assist in the design of new traffic signal systems and modifications to existing systems, including signal permit applications, warrant analysis, and capacity analysis.</li><li>

You will work with guidance from senior staff but with minimal day-to-day instruction on assigned tasks, delivering a range of technical outputs including traffic and safety studies, field investigation reports, concept plans, guidelines inputs, and operational analyses. Support network, corridor, and intersection assessments, including capacity, delay, queueing, and basic safety reviews for key arterials, intersections, and expressway ramps.</li><li>

Assist with transportation safety analyses, including review of crash data, conflict points, and roadside conditions, and help develop practical countermeasure concepts.</li><li>
Prepare and update traffic signal timing inputs, phasing diagrams, and coordination concepts under the direction of senior traffic engineers.</li><li>
Develop draft concepts for traffic signing and pavement markings, lane-use arrangements, and channelization layouts consistent with applicable standards and client preferences.</li><li>
Support pedestrian and vulnerable road user assessments, including observations of crossing behavior, review of pedestrian facilities, and checks of pedestrian timing and accessibility.</li><li>
Apply roadway and traffic design principles when assisting with concept designs for intersection and corridor improvements, ensuring operational and safety considerations are reflected.</li><li>
Assist in the evaluation of ITS-based solutions (e.g., detection, CCTV, traveler information, enforcement technologies) from an operational viewpoint, including data needs and expected benefits.</li><li>
Perform traffic operational analyses using appropriate tools and datasets, and help summarize results to support recommendations for optimizing traffic operations.</li><li>

What You'll Be Doing:</b></p><ul><li>
Overseeing traffic signal, junction, temporary works and other associated traffic engineering designs ensuring effective communication and collaboration with the project team throughout the project lifecycle.</li><li>
Responsible for developing and managing the scope of each traffic engineering design task, creating the schedule, and establishing budgets. This includes monitoring project progress and resource allocation to ensure successful completion.</li><li>
Provide regular written and verbal updates on project status to the project manager. This involves reporting on project milestones, risks, and issues, as well as discussing strategies to mitigate challenges.</li><li>
Present technical results and recommendations, utilizing your expertise in traffic engineering.</li><li>
Lead the project team in preparing traffic engineering plans, which could involve signal designs, signing and marking designs, conceptual designs for intersections, or Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) designs. Your expertise would be essential in ensuring accurate and effective plans.</li><li>
Coordinate with various subject matter experts, such as surveyors and roadway designers to ensure the successful delivery of projects. This involves facilitating collaboration, providing guidance, and integrating their expertise into traffic signal and traffic control plans.</li><li>
Conduct and document traffic studies following nationally accepted modeling practices. This involves using various analytical tools and methodologies to evaluate traffic patterns, assess safety measures, and recommend improvements.</li><li>
Assist engineers in developing technical approaches for traffic engineering projects and review technical results prepared by others. This includes providing guidance and ensuring adherence to quality standards and best practices.</li><li>
Provide training and guidance to junior engineers, sharing your technical proficiency and consultancy skills. This involves mentoring, offering technical support, and facilitating their professional development.</li><li>

What Required Skills You'll Bring:</b></p><ul><li>
Bachelor's Degree in Engineering</li><li>
15+ years of related work experience.</li><li>
Experience/familiarity with Microstation, Bentley OpenRoads, and/or Projectwise</li><li>
Understanding of the use of traffic analysis tools including HCS, Transmodeler, Synchro/SimTraffic</li><li>
Understanding of the application of traffic operations principles including ITE, OMUTCD, MUTCD, ODOT TEM, AASHTO, and ODOT L&amp;D requirements</li><li>
