Department/Position Overview:
Burn Trauma is a 34-bed mixed Intermediate care and medical/surgical unit. There are 17 beds for stepdown/intermediate level of care. The patient population is neurosurgery, trauma, burns and orthopedic trauma. The intermediate care patients are received from both the Burn Trauma ICU and the Neurosurgical ICU. Also, there are 17 beds for Medical/Surgical level of care for neurosurgical, trauma, burns, orthopedic trauma, and bariatric weight loss (gastric bypass and gastric sleeves). Our nurses are trained to work both the intermediate and the medical surgical side. The nurse to patient ratio for the Intermediate Care beds are 3 to 4 and for the Medical/Surgical beds are 5 to 6. The Registered Nurse will work in a collaborative role as part of a team to maintain and support the standards of nursing care and practice, to meet the health care needs of patients, their families, and the community.

What we are:
9 Kaufman is a 24-bed stepdown intermediate care unit that specializes in vascular surgery, telemetry and renal/pancreas transplant patients. 9 Kaufman is part of the Surgical Specialty Team at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital (SNGH). Staffing is comprised of RNs, LPNs, NCPs (nursing care partners) and UAs (unit ambassadors) and CSAs (clinical support associates).
What we do:
Some of 9 Kaufman's vascular surgeries include aortic aneurysm repair, carotid endarterectomy, femoral bypass surgeries and amputations. 9 Kaufman is an extension of the renal/pancreas transplant team to include the outpatient transplant center and all the nurses on 9 Kaufman are specially trained and can sit for the PCCN certification which we will help you obtain. All the beds on 9 Kaufman are monitored beds. 9 Kaufman cares for a variety of patients with telemetry needs, providing an environment conducive to extensive learning and skill development. You will be exposed to many types of patients on 9 Kaufman aiding in your ability to provide great care to anyone that chose Sentara Norfolk General Hospital to meet their healthcare needs.

As a recognized accredited Comprehensive Stroke Center, and Magnet hospital for nursing excellence, our hospital specializes in heart and vascular, neurosciences, neurosurgery, urology, oncology, spine care, advanced imaging, behavioral health, maternity, and women&rsquo;s health, including a state-of-the-art neonatal intensive care unit.

Department/Unit Overview:<ul><li>
16 bed unit</li><li>
Norfolk General Hospital is the only Sentara Facility that performs Kidney/Pancreas Transplants and complex vascular surgeries.</li><li>
Immediate surgical recovery of Kidney and Pancreas Transplant.</li><li>
General Surgical Patients requiring ICU.Management of patients requiring mechanical ventilation.</li><li>
Management of patients requiring CRRT and hemo-dialysis.Vascular: lower extremity revascularization, Abdominal Aortic Aneurism, Mesenteric Artery Repair, EVAR, TEVAR, Lower extremity bypass, revascularization, Carotid Endarectomy and Carotid Stent, EKOS- treatment for DVTs, Medical management of AAA&rsquo;s and dissections.General</li><li>
Patient Population Served: Adult medical and surgical patients requiring intensive nursing care.</li><li>
Average length of stay 2-3 days, complex patients may be there &gt;30days.</li></ul>
