Volunteer Firefighter

<br>Under the supervision of the Fire Chief, the Paid On-Call Volunteer Firefighter performs advanced firefighting work in preventing, combating, and extinguishing fires, responding to hazardous materials incidents and emergency calls which include special rescue situations such as vehicle and steep angle rescue. Work involves training for and participating in duties of protecting life and property through the performance of firefighting and emergency service activities. Volunteer Firefighters are required to learn and participate in the operation of apparatus and the performance of hazardous tasks under emergency conditions which may require strenuous exertion under such handicaps as smoke, fire, heat and cramped surroundings. Participation in a minimum of 60% of department calls for service in a calendar year is required to remain an active Fire Department member. The department averages about 173 calls per year most of which take less than an hour to handle. Although firefighting and emergency services work constitutes the primary and most difficult and responsible area of work, the volunteer is also required to drill twice each month for 3 hours. The drills are usually held from 6pm until 9pm the second and last Monday of each month. These drills consist of practice sessions dealing with various aspects of firefighting, rescue, hazardous materials awareness, and emergency medical work. Time spent at the station may consist of studying, custodial care and a wide variety of maintenance of departmental facilities, apparatus and equipment. Work is usually performed in accordance with explicit instructions and well defined procedures; however, performance of the work requires initiative and the exercise of independent judgment. Two excused absences from drills are allowed per year. If there are more than 2 absences, the firefighter may be asked to perform duties at the fire station to make up time that was missed.

<br>Responds to alarms of fire or other emergencies in accordance with department procedures. Firefighter operates auxiliary equipment, lays and connects hose, holds nozzles, and directs fog, chemical, and water streams. SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION
<br><b>Experience:</b> No experience is required. Certification: Volunteer Firefighters are expected to complete and pass the Wisconsin Certified Firefighter 1 program and Hazardous Materials Class (HAZMAT) within two years after joining the Department. The Firefighter 1 Class is 96 hours of classroom and hands on training with an additional 20 hours of classroom for the HAZMAT. Additional at home study time will be needed. Training will be conducted by Fox Valley Technical College in Appleton at variety of local fire departments or at the Fox Valley Technical College Public Safety Training Center near Appleton, Wisconsin. MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS Age: 18 years of age Education: High School diploma or GED Driver’s License: Must possess a valid driver’s license with no limitations. Residency Requirement: Must reside within 8 minutes of the New London Fire Station, 215 N. Shawano Street, New London Wisconsin. Availability: Firefighters should be available to respond 24 hours a day seven days a week when alerted by a voice emergency message sent over a fire department pager carried by them. While performing the duties of this position, the employee must be able to work at heights and in confined or restricted spaces aboard vessels under construction/repair. Daily inspections require climbing ladders, working at heights, walking on scaffolding, observing use of tools and operation of equipment/machinery. Physical dexterity must allow for bending, reaching, climbing, crawling, and working on ladders and scaffolding. Must be physically able to walk to all yard locations. Must be able to lift up to 100 pounds of weight. Visual abilities required include close, distance and peripheral vision, depth perception and color recognition. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally exposed to dust, fumes, and smoke. Must be able to spend up to 70% of time in an outdoor shipyard environment in all climates. <ul><li>Respond to fire alarms with a company; lays and connects hose; holds nozzles and directs water streams; climbs ladders; uses chemical fire extinguishers, bars, hooks, lines and other equipment</li><li>Ventilates burning buildings by opening windows and skylights or by cutting holes in roofs and floors</li><li>Provides medical assistance to fire victims or as fire responders to emergency situations, until arrival of county medical unit</li><li>Performs salvage operations such as applying salvage covers, sweeping water and removing debris</li><li>Participates in fire drills and attends training classes in apparatus operation, firefighting, emergency medical and related subjects; studies assigned materials relating to firefighting and fire prevention</li><li>Inspects buildings and premises for familiarization; checks for fire hazards; participates in the inspection and maintenance of fire hydrants</li><li>Operates fire apparatus and assumes command of a fire company on an occasional basis when a company officer or captain supervisor is unavailable</li><li>Performs general maintenance and cleaning work in the upkeep of departmental apparatus, equipment, and structures; cleans kitchen, sleeping quarters, walls, and floors; washes, hang and dries hose; washes, cleans and polishes apparatus</li><li>Participates in a variety of fire prevention operations, activities and programs including: training, participation in activities and operations in response to natural disasters, major accidents, incidents involving hazardous materials and other emergency situations.</li><li>Use departmental computer equipment to input, review and access records, information and other various data</li><li>Give tours of fire station facilities, demonstrate fire equipment and apparatus, and participate in other educational programs for various groups and general public pertaining to a variety of life safety topics</li><li>Perform inspection and maintenance on fire hydrants in accordance with internal standard operating procedures</li></ul></div></div>

General knowledge of the operations of firefighting equipment; working knowledge of modern firefighting principles, practices, and procedures; working knowledge of geography of the Town; ability to exercise sound judgement in routine and emergency situations; ability to accept firefighting discipline and operational routine; ability to maintain vehicles, equipment and facilities; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees and the public; ability to maintain physical fitness standards as required to perform assigned work.<br>

<b>Minimum Education and Experience</b><br>
High school diploma, GED, or equivalent; valid Class B North Carolina driver&rsquo;s license or valid Class E South Carolina driver&rsquo;s license; IFSAC / Pro Board Firefighter Certification; North Carolina Emergency Medical Technician and must meet the medical requirements set forth in NFPA 1582 Chapter 6: Medical Evaluations of Candidates<br>

<b>Preferred Requirements</b><br>
IFSAC / Pro Board Driver Operator &ndash; Pumps and Aerials; IFSAC / Pro Board Technical Rescuer and two years of career firefighting experience<br>

<b>Physical Requirements</b><br>
Must have the agility and physical strength to do prolonged and arduous work under adverse conditions. The includes but is not limited to the ability to lift, move and maintain position on items (e.g. charged hoses) up to 100 pounds; push objects up to 50 pounds; pull objects from 25 to 50 pounds, and lift or pull victims weighing more than 150 pounds.<br>
Must be able to physically perform the basic life operational functions of climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, hearing and perform repetitive motions.<br>
Must posses the visual acuity to operate trucks and other equipment, to observe the color, the volume, and extent of fire involvement, and to prepare manual and computerized records.</p></div></div></div>
