Essential Job Functions 
<ul><li>Plans, designs, promotes, presents and evaluates library programs including Summer Reading Program for children, young adults, parents and adults who work with children.</li><li>
Provides reference assistance to patrons in person and/or by telephone as needed. Answers reference and reader's advisory questions from the public and conducts necessary research in various media, including electronic sources.
</li><li>Evaluates and maintains the juvenile and/or young adult materials collections and database to reflect needs of the community
</li><li>Consults with teachers and prepares collections for use with their classes.
</li><li>Teaches basic library skills to groups of youth during class visit orientation; conducts other training programs for youth when needed.
</li><li>Plans and/or prepares displays, bibliographies, and other informational materials.

<li>Responsible for opening/closing.

<li>Participates in countywide children&rsquo;s services and attends meetings of the Children&rsquo;s and/or YA Council.

Environmental Conditions<ul><li>

General Summary
The Youth Services Librarian supports and assists the Associate Director of Youth Services. About the Role
As the Youth Services Librarian, you will be responsible for planning and implementing dynamic and engaging programs for children, teens, and families. This includes Storytimes, afterschool programs, bilingual/multicultural programs, and the Summer Reading Program. You will manage the branch's youth materials collection and promote library services through outreach to schools, parent groups, daycare providers, and community organizations.
In addition to programming, you will assist with customer service, collection development, technology assistance, and other library functions. The Youth Services Librarian may also be expected to assume responsibility for the operation of the branch in the absence of the branch manager and/or site supervisor and will assist with other library functions including customer service, technology assistance, collection development and maintenance, and reader's advisory. This position includes the responsibility of opening and closing the facility on specified days, nights, and weekends; and includes ensuring that the library environment is conducive for excellent customer service (i.e. reporting equipment problems, leaks, outages, etc. to Manager or supervisor). The Youth Services Librarian is to carry out library and city policies and procedures, i.e. circulation and registration, computer use, cash handling, and behavior guidelines. Must have strong written communication skills. Candidates must be able to provide general information and reference services in person, phone or email.
The Youth Services Librarian position will be assigned to the Vance Chavis Branch, but Greensboro Public Library reserves the right to transfer employees to other library locations as required by service needs. $26,956.80 - $43,130.88 annually plus benefits 
The initial compensation for this position generally falls between $26,956.80 and $28,304.64 contingent upon relevant experience and qualifications.
Schedule: 
24 hours per week

Job Summary:
Assists adult, teen, and juvenile customers with a variety of informational and programming services in the adult department; maintains assigned areas of collection; works under general supervision; performs other duties as assigned. 
Essential Functions:
1. Greets customers and responds to information, circulation, reference, and reader&rsquo;s advisory requests using model reference and reader&rsquo;s advisory behaviors. 
2. Maintains current knowledge of information resources and search tools to assist customers. 
3. Uses current knowledge of Library related technology to assist and instruct customers and perform basic troubleshooting. 
4. Analyzes customers&rsquo; questions to decide search strategy and uses appropriate information resources to meet customer needs. 
5. Processes customers&rsquo; requests for materials. 
6. Weeds, replaces, and adds materials to adult collections as directed and according to branch and system guidelines, suggests additions to collection area. 
7. Prepares and presents programs, booktalks, and event activities both in the branch and at other locations such as schools, and special events. 
8. Registers customers for programs. 
9. Conducts library tours for various groups. 
10. Creates and maintains library displays. 
11. Monitors and coordinates placement of miscellaneous materials. 
12. Communicates library policies and procedures to customers as appropriate. 
13. Manages multiple customers simultaneously while providing exemplary customer service. 
14. Serves as librarian-in-charge as needed; responsibilities include but are not limited to opening and closing activities, resolving customer complaints, handling facility and security issues, and communicating necessary information to staff. 
15. Participates in meetings, teams/committees/workgroups, outreach activities and training opportunities, as appropriate. 
16. May act as Passport agent and process passport applications. 
17. Performs other duties as instructed and assigned.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
1. Knowledge of the principles and practices of reference and reader&rsquo;s advisory services. 
2. Current knowledge of information sources and search tools. 
3. Knowledge of the principles and practices of collection development and maintenance. 
4. Knowledge of CCPL policies, procedures, and guidelines. 
5. Ability to maintain Maryland Library Associate continuing education requirements. 
6. Ability to operate and demonstrate all relevant technologies. 
7. Ability to operate Library equipment. 
8. Ability to develop and present programs. 
9. Commitment to excellent internal and external customer service. 
10. Excellent communication skills.
Education and Experience:
1. Bachelor&rsquo;s degree. 
2. Requires 90 contact hours of approved in-service training through Library Associate Training Institute (LATI) within first 2 years of employment or 9 hours of formal academic course work in library science.</div>
