</p>Responsibilities - What you&rsquo;ll do
<p>Maintains security in buildings/towers/other posts of an adult correctional facility; intervenes during emergencies or altercations and gains physical control of offenders</p>
<p>Supervises movement of offenders inside/outside the correctional facility; conducts periodic counts of offenders; searches offenders and their living quarters for contraband; Escorts/transports offenders to predetermined locations</p>
<p>Supervises offenders: in housing units; during the performance of work activities; during recreational/ religious activities</p>
<p>Conducts inspections for health and safety hazards; prepares/submits reports on offender violations of divisional or correctional facility rules/unusual offender behaviors/observed mechanical deficiencies/ security breaches or failures</p>
<p>Discusses minor adjustment problems with offenders; refers serious problems to proper correctional facility staff; promotes rehabilitation by attempting to modify offender&rsquo;s social attitudes/discouraging undesirable behaviors/encouraging worthwhile activities</p>
<p>Supervises visits with offenders; searches visitors/offenders/buildings/grounds for contraband</p>
<p>Performs work in accordance with established rules/regulations/post orders/specific instructions; receives general administrative direction</p>

The mission of the Division of Youth Services (DYS) is to protect, restore and improve public safety utilizing a continuum of care that provides effective supervision, promotes accountability to victims and communities, and helps youth lead constructive lives through positive youth development. DYS provides a continuum of services that encompass juvenile detention, assessment, commitment and parole. DYS is the agency statutorily mandated to provide for the care and supervision of youth committed by the District Court to the custody of the Colorado Department of Human Services. The Division operates 15 secure facilities that serve youth between the ages of 10 and 21, who are pre-adjudicated, sentenced, or committed. For pre-adjudicated youth, the Division is also responsible for the management and oversight of the Colorado Youth Detention Continuum; a State-funded, locally administered program that provides services to youth at risk of further progressing into the juvenile justice system. In addition to residential programming, the Division administers juvenile parole services throughout the State. Document observations of youth behavior and response to program(s) and document all unit activities and required information in appropriate logs and records systems. Work Environment</b></div><div>
Employees are required to work shift hours. This includes evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays. Shifts may vary between agencies and may include eight (8) hours, ten (10) hours, or twelve (12) hours in duration. Mandatory overtime may be required. Day shift work is not usually available. As a Correctional Youth Security Officer, your position is considered essential and you may be required to report to work during inclement weather.</div><b><br>

 The employee will be responsible for a variety of job functions related to offenders, coaching to help those under supervision address their needs and learn new skills that lead to a more prosocial lifestyle and ultimately protection of the public. These responsibilities include, but not limited to, the preparation of background reports on offenders convicted in Circuit Court which will be utilized to determine sentences; supervision of offenders placed on community supervision through Court ordered probation or parole from a state correctional facility. The employee will be required to supervise a caseload of offenders, which may include but is not limited to: sex offenders, offenders placed on a variety of electronic monitoring devices including Global Positioning System (GPS), gender specific, mentally ill, Interstate Compact, or other specialized caseloads as designated by the Deputy Director of Field Operations. The employee may be assigned to act as an embedded agent assigned to a local law enforcement agency, an Institutional Parole Agent, or an Internet Crimes Against Children Agent (ICAC). The employee will follow policy, procedures, Director Office Memorandums (DOM) and Guiding Principles of the Department of Corrections in order to meet the goals of the Department.

 This is a position in which the incumbent has regular unsupervised access to and direct contact with probationers, or parolees, and is a DART (Drug/Alcohol Test Designated) position in accordance with Civil Service Rules. Some positions assigned as Institutional Parole Agents may have regular unsupervised access to and direct contact with prisoners more than 50% of the time. Considerable independent judgement is required to carry out assignments that have significant impact on services or programs.
