Seasonal Gate Guard (2) Two Positions

Game Wardens

Department of Public Safety

Hourly Wage: $16.53/Regular/Furlough

Location: Guard Station-Closed Area

Controls access, directs traffic and check identification of those persons entering and leaving the Closed Area of the Yakama Reservation. Responsible for reporting any persons attempting unauthorized entry or exit. Observe and report security violations. Maintains an assigned guard station in a clean and orderly condition inside and out. Utilizes a 2-way radio system for communications. Work involves, at times, an element of personal danger during confrontations with violators. Requires the use of independent judgement and discretion. Tour of duty is based on 24-hour rotating shift assignment schedule.

Examples of Work Performed:

Performs duties and responsibilities in accordance with the Public Safety organizational chart and established chain of command.

Performs duties and responsibilities in accordance with applicable Tribal law, guidelines, directives and the Yakama Nation Personnel Policies Manual.

Maintain integrity of assigned posts and areas.

Controls, greets and screens all vehicular traffic by raising and lowering entry cable to roadway.

Records and Enters names, addresses, destinations, vehicle license plate numbers, Yakama enrollment data, and permit information into a daily log, accurately and in chronological order.

Report all routine and extraordinary events, situations, and circumstances to immediate supervisor and/or police dispatch promptly and accurately.

Prepare written security violation reports and other associated forms, checklist, logs, biweeklies, memoranda, and correspondence.

Remain at assigned post until properly relieved and inventoried.

Assist to other security/police personnel and authorities as required.

Must be accountable and responsible for all property assigned to the guard station. Prepares inventory, requests for repair and/or maintenance, and reports lost property immediately.

As required, appears in court to testify and present evidence.

Works closely with the Yakama Nation Public Safety staff, Emergency Services, Yakama Nation Forestry, and Bureau of Indian Affairs Forestry Programs.

Communicates by use of the 2-way radio system to headquarters or police and game warden patrol units to investigate complaints and calls for emergency assistance.

Read maps and Global Positioning tracking system (GPS) to identify service area, landmarks, and addresses and to provide directions.

Performs daily housekeeping duties to ensure a safe, clean worksite and general grounds keeping duties to include watering lawns, pulling weeds, operating a weed eater, lawn mower and sharp hand tools.

Maintains wood stove heating source; gathers wood; connects battery for power source, disconnects battery when power is depleted; maintains a propane pilot light, mantles and propane stove.

Must wear department uniform attire and maintain a high standard of appearance and hygiene.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Knowledge, in general, of Federal and Tribal laws of the Revised Yakama Code.

Knowledge of the Yakama Nation Reservation roads and geography.

Ability to exhibit reliable time and attendance; submit requests for leave in a timely and appropriate fashion.

Ability to speak in a clear and well-modulated voice.

Ability to Read maps and Global Positioning tracking system (GPS) to identify service area, addresses and provide directions.

Ability to exhibit skill and proficient in the use of a 2-way radio, personal computer or hand-held data device, lawn mower, weed eater, sharp hand tools operation.

Ability to enter and retrieve information from an automated computer system.

Ability to exercise sound judgment in urgent decisions.

Ability to detect and report conditions which may indicate danger, loss, or damage to property or injury to persons.

Ability to successfully complete scheduled and required training relative to position.

Ability to adhere to high standards of personal conduct on and off the job.

Ability to think and react quickly.

Ability to handle stress.

Ability to maintain strict confidentiality of program and client information.

Ability to communicate courteously, tactfully, and effectively with the general public and co-workers.

Ability to follow oral and written instructions.

Ability to work independently and productively with minimal supervision.

Ability to be reliable, dependable, and trustworthy.

Ability to work rotating shifts, overtime and fluctuating tours of duty to include, evenings, nights, weekends and holidays.

Maintain current required certifications in CPR techniques and first aid.

Minimum Requirements:

High School Diploma or GED.

Any experience or education, which demonstrates ability to perform the work noting special qualifications, required in law enforcement.

Required to pass pre-employment drug test.

Required to successfully pass a criminal background check. No misdemeanor or felony convictions.

Must possess a valid Washington State Driver's License with the ability to obtain a Yakama Nation Driving permit.

Required to possess and maintain a first aid/CPR card current or obtain one within 6 months of hire.

Required to wear a department uniform.

Minimum keyboarding/typing skill of 35 words per minute (wpm).

Required to take an annual physical to certify physical fitness to perform duties.

Required to work irregular hours, overtime, weekends, holidays, and rotating shifts.

Able to work in adverse weather conditions and remote forested area.

Required to attend and successfully complete mandatory training.

Must understand the position and working conditions and consider the impact on personal life-style and family.

Required to sign a code of conduct and understand sanctions for misconduct.
