Clarification from the agency

This position is being filled using the Alaska National Interest Lands Conservation Act (ANILCA) local hiring authority (16 USC 3198). Any U.S. Citizen who has acquired special knowledge or expertise regarding the natural or cultural resources of Sitka National Historical Park, by reason of having either lived or worked in or near the unit may apply. See Qualifications section for eligibility requirements.

Duties of the position include but are not limited to the following:

• Performing visitor center front desk support by responding to visitor inquiries.
• Giving talks: Provides pre-established talks normally following a prescribed outline and requiring the application of subject matter knowledge of the feature of interest peculiar to the site. Such talks include detailed and specific interpretation and explanation of the outstanding features on the site from the standpoint of scientific or historical interest, the background of events leading up to the feature or phenomenon, the facts, events, personalities and circumstances. In addition, the talks provide general information about other sites of public interest, facilities for public use, pertinent rules and regulations and other matters designed to stimulate a sense of appreciation and thus encourage protection and preservation of the scenic, scientific or historic features.
• Provide services to visitors, such as assistance with first aid to the individuals level of training, providing information about weather conditions etc.
• Completing a variety of supportive functions such as maintaining property inventory or recording statistics.
• Conducting on-foot roving patrols of the park to provide informal interpretation and to protect natural and cultural resources.
• Advising visitors of park regulations and explaining the importance of such to encourage visitor support for protection of the resources and/or safety of visitors.
• Providing public orientation and explanations of current park events and informing visitors of potential safety hazards.

Conditions of employment

• U.S. Citizenship required.

• Appointment subject to background investigation and favorable adjudication.

• Meet Selective Service Registration Act requirement for males.

• Selectee will be required to participate in the Direct Deposit Electronics Funds Transfer Program.

• You will be required to operate a government (or private) motor vehicle as part of your official duties; a valid driver's license is required. You will be required to submit a Motor Vehicle Operator's License and Driving Record. You must also submit (within a State sealed envelope or submitted directly by the State authorities), and at your own expense, all certified driving records from all States that disclose all valid driver's licenses, whether current or past, possessed by you.

• You may be required to complete training and operate a four-wheel drive vehicle.

• You will be required to wear a uniform and comply with the National Park Service uniform standards. A uniform allowance will be provided.

• You may be required to work on-call, evenings, weekends, holidays, and overtime.

• Applicants must be at least 18 years old.

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS:
Special knowledge or expertise concerning the park's or preserve's natural and/or cultural resources and the management thereof is required. Local knowledge of the resources and the typical conditions that affect the work to be accomplished will be applied in the performance of duties.

Areas considered "near" Sitka National Historical Park are Baranof Island, which includes the community of Sitka, and the adjacent Admiralty Island including Angoon, the adjacent Chichagof Island including Hoonah, and the nearby City and Borough of Juneau.
