Dr. Tavel Optical Group is seeking a hands-on, mechanically inclined Second Shift Lab Manager to lead our Machinery and Surfacing Operations. This role is responsible for overseeing the performance, efficiency, and reliability of lab equipment while ensuring production goals are met safely and accurately.
This manager will work directly on the lab floor—operating machinery, monitoring throughput, addressing issues in real time, and supporting the team through hands-on leadership. Our lab is fast-paced and equipped with advanced optical manufacturing technology, making this role ideal for someone who thrives at the intersection of mechanical systems, computer-driven equipment, and people leadership.
Optical or machinery experience is preferred but not required. We provide comprehensive training for candidates with strong mechanical aptitude and leadership potential.
- Surfacing and machinery workflow oversight

- Oversee second-shift machinery and surfacing operations
- Operate, monitor, and support optical lab machinery used in lens production
- Ensure equipment is running efficiently, safely, and within quality standards
- Identify, troubleshoot, and resolve machinery issues to minimize downtime
- Perform routine equipment checks, calibration, and light maintenance
- Escalate repair needs and coordinate service as necessary
- Monitor production queues and adjust workflow to meet output goals
- Train and support associates on proper equipment use and safety procedures
- Maintain accurate production records and system documentation
- Enforce lab safety standards and ensure compliance with procedures
- Communicate shift performance, challenges, and needs to lab leadership
- Provide coverage and hands-on support during PTO, absences, or high-volume periods
- Ability to stand for extended periods and lift up to 25 pounds
- Strong mechanical aptitude with comfort working around machinery
- 1+ years of experience in a manufacturing or production environment preferred
- Experience operating computer-driven or automated equipment a plus
- Strong attention to detail and quality control
- Basic proficiency with computers and production software systems
- Comfortable performing repetitive tasks and working with precision equipment
