Secondary Food Technology

Food Technology / Food Preparation and Nutrition across Key Stages 3 and 4, equipping students with practical cooking skills, nutritional knowledge, and an understanding of food science and healthy living. The role includes preparing students for GCSE/IGCSE Food Preparation and Nutrition and contributing to a dynamic and engaging Design & Technology provision.Key ResponsibilitiesTeaching and Learning

  • Plan and deliver high-quality Food Technology lessons across KS3 and KS4
  • Teach both practical and theoretical components of Food Preparation and Nutrition
  • Prepare students effectively for GCSE/IGCSE Food Technology or Food Preparation and Nutrition
  • Use a range of teaching strategies to develop practical skills, independence, and confidence
  • Differentiate effectively to meet the needs of all learners

Curriculum and Assessment

  • Contribute to the planning and development of the Food Technology curriculum
  • Ensure clear progression in practical skills, food science knowledge, and nutritional understanding
  • Assess, record, and report on student progress in line with school policies
  • Support moderation and coursework requirements where applicable
  • Use assessment data to inform teaching and improve student outcomes

Practical Provision and Health & Safety

  • Plan, prepare, and manage practical cooking lessons effectively
  • Ensure compliance with health and safety regulations, including food hygiene standards
  • Maintain a safe, clean, and well-organised food technology room
  • Manage equipment, ingredients, and resources efficiently
  • Promote safe working practices and hygiene among students

  • Promote high expectations of behaviour, effort, and presentation
  • Support students in developing life skills, including independence, organisation, and teamwork
  • Encourage interest in food, nutrition, and healthy lifestyles
  • Contribute to extra-curricular opportunities such as cooking clubs or competitions

  • Work collaboratively within the Design & Technology department and wider school team
  • Contribute to departmental and whole-school initiatives

Person SpecificationEssential

  • Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) or equivalent
  • Relevant qualification in Food Technology, Nutrition, or a related field
  • Experience teaching Food Technology across KS3 and KS4
  • Experience preparing students for GCSE/IGCSE Food Preparation and Nutrition
  • Strong practical classroom management and organisational skills
  • Knowledge of food hygiene and health & safety requirements

Desirable

  • Experience teaching KS5 Food Science or related subjects
  • Experience in an international or British overseas school
  • Ability to contribute to wider Design & Technology provision
  • Experience leading enrichment activities or competitions
