Secondary Special Education Tutor (Executive Function & Academic Support) – In-HomePosition Overview

Thrive Education Partners is seeking a skilled, patient, and highly organized tutor to support a secondary student receiving special education services in Nashville, TN.

The ideal tutor will provide targeted academic support while helping the student strengthen executive functioning skills such as organization, task initiation, planning, and follow-through. Sessions should reinforce classroom instruction, support completion of assignments, and help the student develop strategies for working more independently and confidently.

This role is best suited for an educator who understands how to balance academic support with coaching around learning strategies, study habits, and self-advocacy.

The student responds best to a teacher who is:

  • Structured and consistent with clear expectations and routines
  • Skilled at breaking down assignments and supporting task completion
  • Comfortable teaching executive functioning strategies (organization, planning, time management)
  • Encouraging and strengths-focused
  • Able to maintain engagement while providing repetition and structure

Strong alignment with the student’s current coursework and learning goals is important so sessions directly support success in the classroom.

Because the student maintains a busy schedule, sessions should be efficient, focused, and well-structured.

Responsibilities

  • Provide academic support aligned with the student’s current middle or high school coursework
  • Reinforce classroom instruction and assist with assignment completion
  • Teach and model executive functioning strategies such as organization, planning, and time management
  • Help the student develop systems for tracking assignments and preparing for tests
  • Prepare structured sessions that maximize impact in limited weekly time
  • Foster confidence, independence, and self-advocacy
  • Travel to the student’s home in Nashville, TN
  • Communicate professionally with the Thrive team and family
  • Provide brief session updates and recommended next steps

Qualifications

  • Minimum of 2 years of teaching or tutoring experience, preferably in middle or high school settings
  • Experience working with students with IEPs or special education services
  • Strong understanding of executive functioning and learning strategies
  • Ability to scaffold assignments and adapt instruction to student needs
  • Highly dependable, punctual, and organized
  • Strong communicator who builds trust with families
  • Ability to maintain structure while keeping sessions engaging and supportive
