Schedule: 6:00 am – 2:30 pm, Monday – Friday, with rotating weekends

Your role with us

The section technical specialist plays a key role in supporting high-quality laboratory operations by providing technical expertise, coordinating daily workflow, and ensuring compliance with accreditation standards. This position serves as a resource for staff, fosters continuous improvement, and contributes to the development and implementation of section goals and quality initiatives. In addition to administrative responsibilities within the microbiology section, the specialist will also perform patient testing in this area.

What you'll do

  • Assists with prioritizing and performing the daily workload within the microbiology section.
  • Collaborates with the senior specialist to ensure consistent adherence to policies, procedures, and quality standards.
  • Maintains a thorough working knowledge of the Laboratory Information System and uses it efficiently and effectively.
  • Works cooperatively with shift supervisors to share information, implement changes, educate staff, and involve team members in decision-making.
  • Participates in and completes section or lab projects as required. Supports compliance with CAP, Joint Commission, Oregon State licensure, and other accreditation standards.
  • Ensures policy and procedure manuals are current, meet accreditation standards, and support staff needs.
  • Assists in setting, completing, and monitoring section goals and objectives; promotes innovative ideas for improvement.
  • Actively participates in quality review activities, including defining, implementing, validating, and monitoring performance indicators.
  • Reviews and maintains instrument maintenance and repair records; ensures timely notification and minimal instrument downtime.
  • Participates in continuing education programs to maintain and enhance professional skills.
  • Provides orientation and training programs as needed.

Required qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree
  • Microbiology Technologist – Must have 1 of 2: MLS or MT.
  • Medical Laboratory Scientist – Must have 1 of 2: MLS or MT.
  • A minimum of two years of technical laboratory experience in the designated section of a clinical laboratory.
  • Must obtain a minimum of 8 CEUs annually.
