Security Manager

JOB PURPOSE


The Security Manager leads a program of activities covering security for collections, people, physical plant, grounds, and parking lot, to support a safe and welcoming environment for the Linda Hall. The role holds primary responsibility for safeguarding the Library’s assets, while ensuring organizational accountability for safety and security practices, and acts as the primary liaison with law enforcement.

This position develops and maintains a dynamic and integrated framework for security and safety, encompassing policies, procedures, training, monitoring and audit, and technology and collaborates closely with Facilities, Collections and Public Services, IT, Human Resources, and senior leadership.

The ultimate objective is to ensure 24/7 security cover, provide a robust and reliable security framework, while maintaining a welcoming, and accessible environment that supports the Library’s mission.


KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES AND ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Security Development and Administration
    • Develop, implement, and continuously improve the Library’s physical security, workplace safety, and emergency preparedness programs, ensuring a strong long‑term security and safety posture against industry standards.
    • Administer and oversee physical security technologies, including alarm systems, access control, video surveillance, and key control systems, ensuring effective performance, appropriate use, and ongoing compliance through routine reviews and audits.
    • Maintain the Library’s security and safety policies, standards, and documentation. Identify relevant best practices and regulatory changes and incorporate them into practical improvements to programs and procedures.
    • Manage and analyze security and safety data, including incident trends, audit findings, and system metrics. Prepare reports, performance and status updates, and presentations that support leadership awareness, oversight, and informed decision making.
  • Risk Assessment, Prevention, and Compliance
    • Conduct proactive risk assessments, audits, and inspections to identify vulnerabilities related to physical security, employee safety, facilities operations, and asset protection, and implement appropriate mitigation strategies.
    • Develop, implement, and lead the Library’s safety and security training, drills, and preparedness program, including the planning and operation of exercises related to severe weather, fire safety, medical response and other emergency scenarios.
  • Security Operations, Response, and Investigations
    • Serve as the Library’s primary onsite security presence, providing visible patrols, access support, incident response, and emergency coordination, and serving as the primary liaison with law enforcement, emergency services, and external partners.
    • Support staff in addressing safety, security, and conduct concerns, including leading investigations, maintaining documentation and reporting systems, and collaborating with Human Resources and leadership as appropriate.
    • Ensure the smooth running of key swipe operations, training, onboarding and 24/7 security cover.
    • Oversee parking and traffic management operations, including administration of parking standards, coordination of logistics, and supervision of the part‑time Parking Attendant.
  • Vendor Management
    • Direct contracted security personnel by setting expectations through the development and maintenance of post orders and procedures, conducting audits, and enforcing compliance with performance standards and operational procedures.
    • Lead end-to-end management of vendor services for monitoring, maintenance, and security systems, including identifying needs, sourcing and evaluating vendors, managing implementation, and conducting ongoing coordination and performance review to ensure services meet operational and organizational standards.
  • Other Duties
    • Perform other related duties as assigned in support of the Library’s operations.


SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Direct supervision of Parking Attendant (part time)
  • Provides functional oversight of contracted security personnel
  • Provides functional oversight of security vendors.


EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Required

  • Minimum of seven (7) years of industry experience, including at least five (5) years in security management.
  • Class A unarmed security license issued by the Kansas City Department Licensing Unit; PPI (Private Patrol Investigator) or other uniformed security credentials, or equivalent experience, with the ability and willingness to obtain required licensure and credentials.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of security principles, practices, systems, and technologies, as evidenced by prior work experience, certifications, or formal training.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and other relevant software applications, including security management systems.
  • Ability to work a full‑time schedule between 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m., with flexibility for occasional evenings and weekends; this position includes on‑call responsibilities.
  • Possession of a valid driver’s license and eligibility for coverage under the organization’s insurance policy.


Desirable

  • Associate or bachelor’s degree in security management, criminal justice, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Experience protecting high‑value cultural assets or collections.

  • Discretion: Demonstrates the ability to handle sensitive situations or privileged information with tact and confidentiality. Exercises sound judgment in safeguarding sensitive data, maintaining privacy, and making informed decisions while respecting boundaries and protocols.
  • Integrity: Is honest in dealings and demonstrates a consistent adherence to strong moral and ethical principles.


TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS

0 – 5%.


WORK CONDITIONS

  • Work is performed in both an office setting and throughout the facility, with occasional outdoor duties subject to weather conditions.
  • This position includes on‑call responsibilities and requires availability for occasional evening and weekend work.
